C5 Getting To Work

“Sir, he has been in town for almost a month now,” a man in an all-black attire said as soon as he came inside the dimly lit office.

A man who sat on the boss chair in the shadows let out a chuckle “How are his movements? You haven’t given me any reports these past few days” he said in a rusty deep voice.

“I am sorry about that sir, I had some issues to att-”

“Do they concern me?” he asked harshly and hit the table hard which made the man flinch.

The man shook his head and bow his head.

“I do believe that I am not speaking to a robot?” he asked calmly this time.

“No, sir” the man replied.

“Good, I will pardon you and I don’t want any faults this time. You all know how important it is for me to keep him this close to me, I need him alive and well. The only person that should be hurting him is me so am I clear on that?” he asked.

“Yes sir”

“I need daily reports on him, where he goes to, who he meets with, who is close to him, everything I need to know about his movement,” he said and dismissed the man while he relaxed back on his chair.

“It’s getting closer Cade,” he chuckled “We will meet when it is time” he laughed.

This was his second week at work and he was already liking it so far, although he had a pile of papers, he was to attend to on his first day at work but all was going well for him.

He still couldn’t forget how the meeting with his mum went and wondered if want to say anything of that sort but she said it, no denying that and he feels bad that she couldn’t even give him an explanation at least.

He didn’t want to take it as his mum dislike the sight of him that was why she told him that he should leave and that he wasn’t wanted but even if his mum didn’t mean that why did she want him out of town, she in some ways looked like she feared for something if he left and he wanted to know what exactly that was.

Lexi could be hiding something vital about his dad and he feels like it might mean danger for her, him, his family back home, and those he ever cares for but he has to at least know what was up before thinking of leaving this place, he was already enjoying the environment.

He did receive calls from home when he had forgotten to call and he had to apologize and promise not to let them be that worried. He had also had an evening planned with Michelle after work but since he would be getting off early, he would head over to grab some groceries so that he can make them dinner.

It was one of the things he enjoyed doing while he was alone but now that he has a girl, he wants to make it a habit to cook for them both when he isn’t feeling too tired.

“Hey, there new guy” a guy who was wearing a pair of black-rimmed glasses calls out to Cade and took him out of his thinking bubble.

Cade looked up from the paper in front of him to the man who was leaning on the door to his office while looking around his little office.

“Yes?” he inquired when the guy was lost in looking around.

“Oh yeah, the boss wants to see you,” he said then was about to leave when he stopped to clarify his message “I meant the head of the department,” he said and Cade nod his head.

“Okay, I’ll go see her after I am done with this file in my hand” he lifts the paper up so that he could see it.

“No, like go now… she hates when she is kept waiting, that’s why we refer to her mostly as the boss,” he said and Cade dropped the file then grabbed his phone, put it in his pocket, and walked towards the guy “Just don’t call or refer to her as a boss in front of the boss” he walked away when he said that.

Cade just watches the strange-acting, black-rimmed glass-wearing guy walk out of his sight after passing his message. He’ll get accustomed to how things work here soon and how his co-workers are with time.

He made his way to the office of the department head and when he was by the door, he let out a sigh and knocked then heard a ‘come in’ before he opened the door and entered to see her writing something on a book and putting it away when he came in.

She gestured for him to sit, and he wondered what might be the issue for her to call him. He did hope that he did nothing and if he did, he would accept any scolding that would follow, he was working towards being better at what he was doing.

“Cade Lorenzo,” she said his name as if she was testing it in her mouth and he felt worried that maybe he actually did something.

“Yes, ma’am?” he answered, waiting to hear what she had to say to him.

“Cade Leandro Lorenzo,” she said again and it added to the tension he was currently feeling “I wasn’t sure when you first came in here looking for a job but I think that I have my suspicion confirmed” she looked directly at him and he was beginning to get an idea of what she was saying but wanted her to say it.

“Your father is Donald Lorenzo, right?” she asked and he nods his head.

‘Did dad track me here? Is he aware of my job here and wants me back home already’ these questions flooded his head as he tried to think of what to tell her so that he keeps this job and then call his dad not to try and stop him from doing what he wants.

“Yes, he is ma’am” he answered when her brows raised as she awaits his answer.

“Okay, just want to confirm that because some lady called saying that you are here for the holidays before coming back home,” she said and he frowned when she mentioned the lady.

He didn’t need to confirm to know that the lady in question should be Daniella.

‘What’s her problem?’ he asked himself and silently hissed in annoyance.

Maybe he really needed to put her in her place and tell her to back off else she wouldn’t like what he would to her. He couldn’t think of any harsh thing to do to her but would come up with something that would make her stop bothering him.

“Mrs. Lope-” she held her hands up to stop him from speaking.

“No need to redeem yourself or try to explain anything, I wanted to confirm and also to inform you that after the lady’s call, we came in contact with your dad and he asked about your wellbeing and job, he increased the donations he gives to our company orphanage home,” she said and he frowned.

His father knew this company and not only gave but increased the donations he dishes to them, it shouldn’t really be a bother to him seeing as his dad was used to doing such, and just like him, his dad wanted to live the life they wanted even though their definition of ‘living the life’ differs.

He just wasn’t aware that his dad’s giving hands extended to this part of the city, so if his dad knows this part of the city, he would know exactly where he lives and some of the activities he has been doing in the past weeks, including his relationship with Michelle.

It was a bit fine by him in as much his dad just let him be and not meddle in his affairs. He doubts if his dad knows about his real father and his whereabouts. Lexi wasn’t pleased with him coming to her and didn’t want to disclose any further information he asked.

Asking his dad is the last thing on his mind presently, he knows how his mind works. He might strike up a deal to give him an answer and in return, he comes back home which he has no plan of doing.

“I do not want any form of special treatment due to my family status or my dad’s generosity here, I would want the same and equal treatment that everyone here gets as workers in this organization,” he told her and she nods her head then looked at the file in front of her.

“That’s good, I appreciate your humility and according to the woman that called, she said that you were here in the mean time which contradicts what you said when you were interviewed for this job. Do you still want to stay here longer or you will be out soon?”

“I do plan on staying here for a really long time so there is nothing to worry about here ma’am”

“I was not worried, just wanted to find out how soon we would have to put up a vacancy,” she said then dismissed him.

“Quite grumpy,” he remarked when he left her office and then back to his office to finish his work.

He saw a message pop on his phone then he checked to see who it was and saw that it was a private number which seemed so strange to him so he went on to read the content of the message.

Private Number: Want to know who your dad is? Go to the address below.

He frowned at the message he saw then looked up before looking back at his phone. No one actually has his contact except, his family back home and Michelle, and Daniella too but no one else and he wondered who that might be.

Lexi did sound hesitant on telling him what he asked for. The manner in which she put it made it seem like it was something grave, something he shouldn’t bother himself knowing, and now that some unknown person is offering to tell him what he needs to know, he is conflicted.

He either get back to his mum’s place of work and keeps pestering her to tell him what he needs to know about his dad or takes the risk of trusting this unknown person to know what he needs to know.

He tore out a piece of paper and wrote down the address and time that was given, he might consider it but when he sees Lexi one more time.
