Gu Dongchen's face contorted with shock. They wanted one of his hands just like that? Gu Dongchen's lips faltered, as he attempted to negotiate terms, but Hao, standing beside him, unflinchingly grabbed a dagger and chopped at Gu Dongchen's left hand.
"Ah~"
A blood-curdling scream echoed as Gu Dongchen's bloodied left hand hit the floor.
"Brother, are you satisfied?" Hao asked, his face devoid of emotion.
Chen Feng gave a slight nod, his respect for Hao growing. Hao was decisive and keenly observant.
Had Gu Dongchen dared to keep negotiating, Chen Feng would have left him no choice but to lose both hands!
Hao realized he had just saved one of Gu Dongchen's hands.
"You're very capable. If you ever decide to leave this line of work, come find me," Chen Feng said, looking at Hao with admiration.
To stand up to a behemoth like the Chen family, one needed warriors like Hao—loyal and honorable men. Such men were rare in this world.
Hao's lips were tightly sealed, and he remained silent.
Chen Feng wasn't bothered. He understood that masters like Hao had their own sense of pride; they wouldn't easily bow to anyone. But once they did, they would commit their lives to that person—a bond of life and death.
"Furthermore, if anyone dares to speak of today's events..." Chen Feng said with a smile, lightly tapping the long table in the booth. With a "crack," the three-inch-thick marble table shattered to pieces!
"That will be their fate," Chen Feng stated coolly. Then, he picked up Xia Mengyao and left the booth.
The group of ashen-faced toughs at the door parted ways, none daring to block his path.
"Find out, I need to know who he is!" Gu Dongchen commanded, clutching his bleeding wrist in agony, after Chen Feng had departed.
"Mr. Storms, his name is Chen Feng," a weak voice from the subordinate at the door informed him.
"Chen Feng?!"
Gu Dongchen's eyes bulged in disbelief, nearly passing out from shock.
Was this the same man Xia Mengyao had married? The so-called coward Xia Hao had described, who swallowed his pride and said nothing?
"Haha!" Gu Dongchen let out a bitter laugh, tears streaming down his face. If a man like him was considered worthless, then there wouldn't be a single man in the world who wasn't.
Xia Hao, oh Xia Hao!
Damn you!
"Big brother, take my advice. Consider the loss of your hand a costly lesson. Don't go looking for trouble with that guy!" Hao said gravely, glancing at Gu Dongchen's severed hand on the ground.
"Hao, is Chen Feng really that strong? If you faced him with a gun, could you take him down?" Gu Dongchen asked, his voice tinged with frustration. He had been a figure in Efoford for over twenty years and had never suffered such a defeat. If the underworld found out that a live-in son-in-law had chopped off his hand, he might as well pack up and leave.
Hao shook his head. "Big brother, forget it. I wouldn't even get the chance to pull the trigger in front of him."
Gu Dongchen inhaled sharply. He wouldn't even have the chance to shoot?
"I don't know why Chen Feng chose to be a live-in son-in-law, but with his capabilities, if he wanted to make a name for himself in the underworld, he'd easily be the boss of Efoford City," Hao added.
Gu Dongchen fell silent. He realized that any thoughts of revenge were futile. After more than two decades in the underworld, he knew all too well the challenges of becoming a city's top boss. For him, Gu Dongchen, it was an unattainable goal in this lifetime.
Yet, after less than ten minutes with Chen Feng, Hao had already given him such a high appraisal.
This suggested that Chen Feng's true potential went far beyond being the top dog in Efoford.
Chen Feng brought Xia Mengyao to a small clinic. She appeared to be alright, merely unconscious.
But Chen Feng wasn't willing to take any risks. It's better to be safe than sorry.
What if there were lingering effects?
That's why he had come to this clinic.
It was one of the power bases he had cultivated in Efoford. Previously, he had avoided it, fearing discovery by Chen Zhennan, so his visits had been infrequent.
Chen Feng was beyond caring about anything else at this point.
The safety of Xia Mengyao was paramount.
The clinic's owner, a middle-aged woman, looked indistinguishable from any ordinary woman her age. However, Chen Feng was aware that in terms of medical expertise, she was among the top three in the entire Qiannan Province!
This woman was the sole female disciple of the renowned National Physician, Sun Xiuzhen.
"Young Lord!"
Upon seeing Chen Feng, Liu Wanmei's demeanor turned exceedingly respectful.
"Aunt Mei," Chen Feng said with a slight smile, "please check on Mengyao. Someone gave her an aphrodisiac to drink earlier."
"Yes, Young Lord!"
Liu Wanmei nodded and carried Xia Mengyao into a private room.
Shortly after, Liu Wanmei emerged.
"Young Lord, Mengyao is alright. She was just excessively shocked and passed out."
"I'm relieved to hear she's fine," Chen Feng breathed a sigh of relief. "By the way, Aunt Mei, the Chen family might investigate you after I leave. Please be cautious." Chen Feng knew all too well that with the Wraith following him, their meticulousness would surely lead them to look into Liu Wanmei.
"Young Lord, rest assured, I have already prepared an alternate identity," Liu Wanmei assured him.
"Good." Chen Feng nodded approvingly. In his strategic battle with the cunning Chen Zhennan, he had to tread with utmost caution—one misstep could mean total defeat.
It wasn't until the afternoon that Xia Mengyao regained consciousness. Upon seeing Chen Feng, she was unable to hold back her emotions any longer and burst into tears in his embrace.
"Chen Feng, I was so frightened..."
"Don't be scared, I'm here," Chen Feng spoke softly. Regardless of how resilient Xia Mengyao appeared, she was still a woman, and an encounter with a villain like Gu Dongchen could leave deep psychological wounds. Thus, Chen Feng chose not to disclose the full extent of the ordeal to her, simply telling her that the police had arrived just in time to rescue her.
"Chen Feng, why is Xia Hao so heartless? I'm his cousin. How could he be so malicious..." What troubled Xia Mengyao the most was the betrayal by her own cousin, a family member who was willing to destroy her life for personal gain.
"Xia Hao!"
A glint of ice flashed in Chen Feng's eyes. He had suspected Xia Hao was behind the trouble the moment the man with the tiger tattoo approached him. Nobody else would target him like this.
The Chen family wouldn't bother sending such a low-level thug.
Xia Hao's repeated humiliations of Xia Mengyao were bad enough, but this time he nearly compromised her honor. He had crossed a line that Chen Feng could not ignore.
He was determined not to let Xia Hao get away with it this time.
Previously, for Xia Mengyao's sake, Chen Feng had restrained himself, considering that Xia Hao and Xia Yunsheng were her kin.
But it was clear now that while Xia Mengyao saw them as family, they had no such regard for her.
