"Insolence?" Chen Feng said with a dismissive smile, shaking his head slightly. "Perhaps."

"Grandfather, ever since I joined the Xia family, you've never shown me any respect. You believe I've brought shame to the Xia family, so you've deliberately oppressed my father. You've tried to use him to pressure me, to drive me out of the Xia family." "But she is more importantly my wife!" Chen Feng interjected sharply.

"It doesn't matter how the Xia family treats me, how much you bully or insult me, I can take it."

"But you should never have allowed Mengyao to be subjected to any hardship!" Chen Feng's head snapped up, his eyes blazing with an intense light.

Tears streamed down Xia Mengyao's cheeks as she finally understood. The reason Chen Feng had never spoken of Xia Yunsheng's actions over their three years of marriage wasn't that he didn't want to share; he was protecting her from worry and from suffering any distress.

"I will make the Xia family pay a price they cannot bear!" Chen Feng spoke with calm resolve.

"If you perceive this as a threat, then so be it," Chen Feng replied, his tone detached.

"This is the last time I'll address you as 'Grandfather'. From now on, you're on your own!" With those final words, Chen Feng took Xia Mengyao's hand and left without a backward glance.

Behind him, Xia Yunsheng's face was a mask of livid rage!
