C47 I Just Want to Know Who Her Mother Is
Fu Jingchuan narrowed his eyes.
In An An's presence, his son seemed to have no trouble communicating, pouring out his feelings with such emotion.
"Because Mommy wants big brother to make more friends," An An said softly, sitting beside him and noticing the man at the door. "Uncle, big brother is unhappy."
When Fu Sui saw his father enter, he looked up and abruptly asked, "Why did you get married?"
Why marry Lo Qing? Why her?
Fu Jingchuan's frown deepened, a chill emanating from him. "That's not a question you should be asking."
An An, sensing the tension between them, quickly stood up. "Uncle, don't be so harsh. Mommy said we need to be nice to brother because he's sick. But even if brother weren't sick, An An wouldn't be mean to him."
Fu Jingchuan's gaze fell on the little girl, her fair and delicate face radiating innocence, oblivious to the current situation.
Fu Sui immediately stood protectively in front of the girl as though facing a villain.
Fu Jingchuan remained silent. He was neither a natural disaster nor a wild beast, and he certainly wouldn't quibble with a child. What was the point?
"Dear Sui, An An, I'm coming in," Soong Ruanruan announced, knocking on the door. She was puzzled by the odd scene before her. "What's happening here?"
It looked as though Fu Jingchuan was about to strike a child.
Soong Ruanruan eyed the man with suspicion.
Fu Jingchuan gave her a cold glance and exited the room, brushing past her.
Outside, Lo Qing stood with pursed lips, her fists clenched, though her face betrayed no discontent.
She recalled how Fu Sui always seemed displeased whenever she entered his room. Fu Jingchuan had instructed her not to enter without the boy's permission. But why was that woman allowed to converse with Fu Sui anytime, while she, the future lady of the house, was kept at a distance?
Seeing Fu Jingchuan emerge, her expression fell. "Jingchuan, may I go in to see Sui? It seems he's misunderstood something."
His response was icy and merciless. "No."
Lo Qing clenched her hands even tighter. "Why? Dr. Soong was allowed in, wasn't she?"
"You're not a doctor."
With that, Fu Jingchuan was on his way downstairs but came to an abrupt halt as he passed the drawing room.
He approached with determined steps, and upon seeing the painting, his deep-set eyes suddenly narrowed.
Lo Qing glanced at it, puzzled. "That's Dr. Soong's work, right? It's quite impressive."
Despite her aversion to Soong Ling, Lo Qing had to concede that her artistic talent was undeniable; the composition and use of color were indeed delightful.
"Jingchuan, is something the matter?" Lo Qing grew anxious as the man remained motionless, silently contemplating the painting. She worried he might be taken with it simply because it was well done by that woman.
As she was about to speak up again, he turned and continued downstairs, as if his previous focus had been nothing more than a fleeting illusion.
At that moment, a bodyguard at the entrance announced, "Young Master, Director Soong Deyi is here to see you."
Soong Deyi, the chairman of Soong's Group, was also Soong Feifei's father.
Yet, there was no personal rapport between the two families, and their only recent collaboration had fallen through due to Soong Feifei's interference.
Being a venerable figure in the business world, Soong Deyi's personal visit was a gesture of considerable sincerity. Fu Jingchuan instructed that the visitor be allowed in.
"You should go back," he said to Lo Qing, who was still lingering nearby, his voice detached.
"But..." Lo Qing began, remembering the psychologist was still there. However, she reconsidered; with a business meeting about to take place, her presence could be intrusive.
"Okay." She replied, her mood visibly deflated. "Jingchuan, when can we have a meal together, just the two of us?"
Fu Jingchuan's expression remained impassive, his response as noncommittal as ever. "We'll see when there's time."
Biting back her frustration, Lo Qing lamented the familiar refrain.
She wasn't worried at all. The position of Young Madam Fu was destined to be hers!
Once she departed, the butler ushered Soong Deyi into the room.
"Director Fu, my sudden visit is quite presumptuous. Please accept my apologies." Despite being older, Soong Deyi knew that in the business world, respect wasn't necessarily given based on age.
Moreover, Fu Jingchuan exuded a commanding presence that naturally made him adopt a deferential tone.
Fu Jingchuan maintained a composed demeanor, signaling Soong Deyi to sit down as he would with any business associate.
After exchanging pleasantries, Soong Deyi got straight to the point, his voice filled with earnestness, "I'm here to apologize for my daughter's indiscretion towards Young Master Fu."
Fu Jingchuan appeared to anticipate Soong Deyi's intentions, listening impassively as Soong Deyi continued. The deliberate tapping of his fingers on the armrest subtly intensified the pressure on Soong Deyi.
"She's been coddled by our family and lacks restraint. Her issue was initially with Dr. Soong, and I never imagined it would infringe upon Young Master Fu's privacy... I hope you can be forgiving and overlook this incident. We will certainly ensure she is better disciplined moving forward."
Soong Feifei's request to include the Fu family in her draft, though not directly aimed at them, touched upon Fu Sui's mental health—a serious misstep. The Fu family's decision not to pursue the matter further was a display of considerable leniency.
Having said his piece, Soong Deyi watched for any change in the man's expression, but despite his experience with various personalities in the business world, he could not discern any emotion from the Fu family's eldest son.
Fu Jingchuan finally spoke, "If the Soong family's discipline falls short, perhaps it's more effective for someone else to step in."
Soong Deyi's expression tensed, realizing there was little chance for further discussion.
In the midst of their conversation, the sound of footsteps bounced down from upstairs. An An arrived, clutching a cashmere toy, and approached Fu Jingchuan with glee, "Mr. Fu, look at the toy my brother gave me!"
Although Fu Sui often gifted her toys, she would always share them with delight, never growing accustomed to the abundance.
Fu Jingchuan responded with a simple "yeah."
Yet, to an outsider like Soong Deyi, this was nothing short of astonishing.
Considering Fu Jingchuan's formidable reputation in business, who would have imagined he'd show tenderness towards a child?
As Soong Deyi was reflecting on this, he was suddenly taken aback.
An An's soft, adorable face caught his eye, reminding him of his own daughter.
"Ruanruan..." he exclaimed involuntarily.
A chill flashed in Fu Jingchuan's eyes.
For four years, he had been searching for information about Soong Ruanruan.
She had claimed to have no family, and he hadn't bothered to investigate. It wasn't until she vanished from his life that he discovered she was the Soong family's illegitimate daughter.
But it was to no avail. Apart from Soong Deyi, the Soong family had long severed ties with her and were clueless about her whereabouts.
The little girl blinked in confusion. "Uncle, my name is Soong Le'ann."
"You're a Soong too?" Soong Deyi abruptly stood, gripping her shoulders as he pressed, "Where's your mother? What's her name? Is it Soong Ruanruan?"
His intense demeanor frightened An An, who tried to back away, but lacked the strength to match an adult's.
Soong Deyi was about to press further when someone whisked the girl away. He looked up to meet Fu Jingchuan's icy stare, realizing he had been inappropriate.
An An peeked out from behind the man's legs, clutching his pant leg as she gazed up at Fu Jingchuan.
"...Sorry," Soong Deyi muttered, his expression falling. "I was just trying to find out who her mother is."
A raspy voice echoed from upstairs, "That would be me."
Soong Ruanruan descended the stairs with a serene composure.
