C13 Misunderstanding
Mrs. Lee was completely taken aback by what Chi Rongyan said and was left speechless.
Seeing her reaction, Rongyan seized the moment, looking at the elderly lady with tears in her eyes. "I've lived in the countryside for many years and once had a mentor. After my mentor passed away, they left me all the herbs they had gathered over the years, telling me to sell them for some money to support myself. I asked Nanny and found out that Grandmother's birthday is coming up, so I sold some herbs at the pharmacy to buy a gift. But I never expected... never expected my second sister..."
Her words were filled with genuine emotion, and halfway through, Rongyan covered her face with a handkerchief and began to cry.
Mo Yi, who had been following Rongyan, was stunned to see her crying so pitifully. Just moments ago, he had seen Third Miss Chi smirking. But now, tears were streaming down her face, and she looked truly miserable. If he hadn't witnessed everything, he might have believed her act.
It seemed that Third Miss Chi was indeed no ordinary person, which explained why his master had instructed him to keep an eye on her. With this realization, Mo Yi paid even closer attention to Rongyan. He needed to remember everything Third Miss Chi did today to report back to his master.
Meanwhile, inside the room, Rongyan was unaware that someone was watching her. She continued her performance, wiping her tears as she spoke.
"Second Aunt and Meng'er have every reason to doubt Yan. I know I've spent many years in the countryside and have become quite rustic. But... I never wanted to get lost. I wanted to grow up under Grandma's care..."
Mrs. Lee's heart tightened when she heard Rongyan mention the past incident of getting lost. However, having spent so many years in the Duke Mansion, she quickly composed herself, apologized to Rongyan, and scolded Meng'er.
"It was my misunderstanding, Yan. Meng'er, don't bring up the countryside again. It only upsets your sister."
Listening to Mrs. Lee, Rongyan couldn't help but admire her. The older, the wiser.
Meng'er, with just a little provocation, would blurt out anything and embarrass herself. But Mrs. Lee remained calm and collected, even apologizing in front of so many servants.
She skillfully avoided the most difficult point to explain, glossing over it effortlessly.
With that, Rongyan couldn't say much more. But... she wasn't in a hurry.
If Mrs. Lee had such courage, she must have done many things behind the scenes. Rongyan would take her time addressing those matters.
With this in mind, Rongyan wiped her tears and looked at Mrs. Lee. "I truly don't mean to blame you, Second Aunt. I just hope Meng'er won't misunderstand me anymore. We're family, and I naturally hope we can get along well."
Mrs. Lee nodded with a smile, noticing her daughter gritting her teeth in frustration. She quickly pulled her daughter to face the matriarch.
"Mother, this time it's my fault and Meng'er's. No matter how you choose to deal with us, I have no complaints."
The matriarch intended to punish Mrs. Lee and her daughter. This was the second time today that such an incident had occurred. However, Mrs. Lee was the only head mistress of the household. With the recent holidays and the matter of the Chu family calling off the engagement, her presence was necessary. Thus, the matriarch found it difficult to take action against Mrs. Lee.
In the end, she could only let out a cold huff and instructed Mrs. Lee to take Chi Meng'er and reflect on their actions behind closed doors for three days.
As the two left, Chi Rongyan presented the gift she had prepared to the matriarch. After chatting with her for a while, she headed back to her own quarters.
