C7 Ten Thousand Taels of Gold

Quite the mystery.

Chi Rongyan muttered to herself as she stood up, tidying her clothes before pretending to be lost and emerging from behind the rock garden.

Seeing her grandmother, Rongyan immediately adopted a pitiful look. "Grandmother... the house is so big, I accidentally got lost. I hope I didn't delay anything important?"

"No, Yan, it's fine if you didn't come."

The old lady, who had been feeling a headache, softened her expression upon seeing Rongyan. "Don't worry too much, Yan. If you want to explore the house, I'll have Nanny show you around."

Rongyan happily agreed.

As she watched Nanny and Rongyan leave, the old lady sighed.

Another nanny immediately stepped forward to support her, offering reassurance. "Don't worry, the choice is in our hands at the Duke Mansion. The Chu family wouldn't dare act out."

"They wouldn't dare. But... it's best to retrieve that token sooner rather than later. Otherwise, if they ever discover its secret, I'm afraid..."

The old lady sighed deeply again but made up her mind.

With this thought, she turned to the nanny beside her and spoke in a low voice. "In a few days, when there are more people around for the winter solstice, prepare the carriage. We'll make a trip to the Jade Tower Pawnshop."

Since the Chu family had already set their minds on this, she had no choice but to handle it in her own way.

Meanwhile, Chi Rongyan strolled around the mansion with her nanny for a bit before returning to her own quarters. The matriarch had sent numerous gifts to her room, and while Rongyan was amazed by the generosity, she also felt a pang of guilt. She had taken over the original owner’s body, and the affection she received was meant for the original owner. But she couldn’t save her. Given the circumstances, the least she could do was honor the matriarch on behalf of the original owner.

With this thought, Rongyan turned to the old nanny beside her. “Nanny, when is Grandmother’s birthday? What does she usually like?”

The old nanny, sent by the matriarch to care for her and ensure her safety, immediately understood Rongyan’s intentions. This made her even more fond of Rongyan, so she replied with a smile, “The matriarch’s birthday coincides with the winter solstice. As for her preferences, anything you gift her, she will surely cherish.”

The Third Miss had only recently returned and likely didn’t have much money. The old nanny knew what the matriarch liked but didn’t want Rongyan to feel pressured. Rongyan sensed the nanny’s thoughts and felt a warm gratitude in her heart.

After thanking the old nanny, she turned and jogged out of the mansion. She had quite a collection of herbs in her special space, which should fetch a good price.

However, before she could sell them, Chi Rongyan noticed a notice posted along the road. As she moved closer to read it, the paper mysteriously floated into her hands.

Chi Rongyan thought, "Really? This is how it happens?"

Suddenly, an elderly man with gray hair and dressed in fine clothes appeared out of nowhere, dramatically pleading and nearly kneeling before her.

"Doctor, please save my daughter! She's my only child!"

Seeing the old man about to kneel, Chi Rongyan quickly agreed to help. She didn't want to shorten her lifespan.

Besides, the reward on the notice was a hefty amount of gold. That was a fortune! Converted to silver, it was a staggering amount!

She had always loved studying difficult medical cases. If she encountered a challenging one, it would be a perfect opportunity for research. If it turned out to be something less severe, she could still cure it and claim the reward.

Either way, she wouldn't lose out.
