C11 Chapter 11: Shadows of the Forest

The early morning air was crisp, carrying the scent of damp earth and moss. Astrea had slept poorly, dreams haunted by Michaela's farewell and the weight of the system's ticking mission. 5 Days, 3 Hours, every hour mattered.

He checked his small pack, adjusted the strap on his shoulder, and drew his dagger, its edge nicked but sharp. The leather vest scratched faintly against his skin, but it was bearable.

Emerging from the shadowed alley that led away from Brighthollow Village, the mountains loomed ahead, tall, jagged silhouettes against the pale dawn. Somewhere within those peaks, a suitable location awaited, but Astrea knew he would not find it without careful exploration.

The forest was alive with morning sounds. Chirp. Rustle. The occasional scurry of small animals. He paused, scanning the surroundings, keenly aware of every shadow. The memory of the Level 3 Tier 1 Fledgling Beast that had chased him still lingered, making his muscles taut.

Rustle.

The underbrush stirred ahead.

Astrea froze.

A low, deliberate sound, growing louder. Something was moving toward him. He crouched slightly, instincts honed from a lifetime of thievery kicking in. His hand gripped the dagger firmly.

Then he saw it.

Eyes glinting through the dense foliage... a familiar, terrifying gaze. The beast was bristled, its stance predatory, but unlike last time, it did not attack immediately. It merely observed, muscles coiled like springs.

Astrea's pulse quickened. Memories of the last encounter surged... the scratches, the near escape, the adrenaline coursing through his veins. So it remembers me too...

The system interface flashed abruptly before his eyes:

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

New Mission Assigned: Neutralize Threat

Target: Level 3 Tier 1 Fledgling Beast

Reward: Compass attuned to High Mana Concentration Location

Time Remaining: 5 Days 3 Hours

Failure: Soul Obliteration (No Reincarnation)

Astrea's eyes narrowed.

"A... kill mission? Seriously?" he muttered under his breath. Then he shook his head. "Fine. Let's not die today."

He scanned the surroundings. The forest provided cover, but the beast was patient, watching every move. Astrea crouched lower, reaching into his pouch and retrieving the bottle of Level 2 Fledgling Beast repellent Michaela had given him.

This will help... a little.

He uncorked it carefully, tossing a small amount onto the ground between himself and the creature. The faint violet smoke rose, forming a thin barrier. The beast hesitated, snuffling the air, but its gaze never wavered.

Astrea exhaled slowly. One step at a time.

He remembered the thief skills he still possessed... pickpocketing instincts, silent movement, and rapid reflexes. He shifted his weight and moved to the side, testing the beast's reaction. Its head turned slowly, tracking him without breaking stance.

"Okay, okay..." he muttered. "We can do this."

He needed a plan. Full frontal combat could easily end badly. The system had given him no choice, but the reward... a compass leading to high mana concentration... could be critical. Mana-rich locations were rare and powerful, exactly the type of environment needed to establish his future academy.

Astrea circled carefully, using trees as cover, calculating angles, distances, and escape routes. The beast followed methodically, stalking silently, making no noise beyond the faintest rustle.

Then he noticed something... a low branch, strong enough to hold a person's weight. An idea sparked.

He picked up a small stone from the forest floor and lobbed it past the beast, toward another patch of foliage.

Thud.

The creature's ears twitched, and it turned toward the distraction for a split second. Enough.

Astrea darted forward, blade in hand. He sidestepped low branches, moving swiftly yet silently. The beast's eyes tracked him, but it hesitated at the repellent, giving him crucial seconds.

He leapt over a fallen tree and lunged, dagger aimed precisely at the beast's flank. The blade sank shallowly, but enough to draw blood. The creature yelped, staggering backward. Astrea rolled aside, avoiding a retaliatory swipe from its clawed paw.

Astrea cursed under his breath. Stupid... why did it have to be this thing again?!

The beast lunged again, faster this time. Astrea ducked low, sliding behind a boulder. He retrieved a second dagger from his belt, readying a quick throw. The small blade struck true, wounding the creature further.

At that moment, a faint hum of magic radiated from the ground beneath him, the system interface pulsing urgently.

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

Mission Progress: Target wounded

Recommendation: Engage with caution

Reward Updated: Compass attuned to High Mana Concentration Location will materialize upon neutralization

Astrea exhaled, wiping sweat and blood from his forehead. His left arm bore a scratch from the initial attack. He bit back the sting, moving carefully. The beast recovered quickly, eyes blazing with intelligence and malice.

Using agile movement and the repellent, he baited the creature toward a cluster of rocks. With a precise strike from his dagger, he severed a tendon in its hind leg. The beast collapsed, howling in a mix of rage and agony, thrashing wildly as it tried to rise.

It snapped its jaws at him, eyes burning with a desperate, primal hate.

In the past, Astrea might have run. He might have taken this chance to escape while the predator was down.

But the system's warning echoed in his mind: Failure: Soul Obliteration.

There was no room for mercy. Not here.

Astrea dropped the dagger and drew the short iron sword he had bought in the village. The blade was dull and heavy, but it had reach.

"You almost killed me yesterday," Astrea whispered, his voice cold. "But I'm not that prey anymore."

The beast lunged one last time, dragging its useless leg, jaws aiming for his throat.

Astrea didn't flinch. He stepped into the guard, jamming his forearm... wrapped in thick leather... into the beast's neck to hold it back, ignoring the crushing pressure. With a guttural roar, he drove the short sword downward, plunging it deep into the creature's chest.

Squelch.

The beast stiffened. It convulsed once, twice, its claws scraping uselessly against his vest. Then, it went limp.

Astrea shoved the heavy carcass aside, gasping for air, his chest heaving. His hands shook, not from fear, but from the adrenaline dump. He stared at the lifeless eyes of the predator that had once terrified him.

I killed it. I actually killed it.

The interface blinked, shattering the silence.

[SYSTEM MESSAGE]

Mission Complete: Level 3 Tier 1 Fledgling Beast Neutralized

Target Status: Deceased

Experience Gained: 50 EXP

Reward Granted: Compass attuned to High Mana Concentration Location

Remaining Time: 5 Days 2 Hours 30 Minutes

Astrea stared at the small glowing compass that materialized before him. It hovered briefly, then settled into his hand, cool to the touch. The needle quivered, pointing unwaveringly deeper into the mountain range.

A faint thrill coursed through him... not just relief, but power. He had faced a superior enemy and won.

He wiped the blood from his blade on the grass and sheathed it.

"Alright," he muttered, gripping the compass tight. "Step one... survive the wild. Step two... follow the mana."

The forest waited around him, massive, indifferent, and alive. But the silence felt different now. He was no longer just a trespasser running for his life; he was a threat.

And somewhere deep in the distance, the faint presence that had been watching him shifted, fading back into the shadows, its interest piqued.

Astrea rose to his feet, bruised and bloody, but standing tall. His path was clear.
