C12 Chapter 12: The Compass Leads
The sun had climbed higher, piercing through the gaps in the dense forest canopy, scattering beams of light across moss-covered rocks and twisting roots. Astrea adjusted the strap of his satchel and stared down at the glowing compass. The needle trembled faintly before settling, pointing unwaveringly deeper into the mountain range.
"High mana concentration..." he muttered. "That's supposed to lead me to a perfect place... for what, I don't know yet. But I better not screw this up."

Failure: Soul Obliteration (No Reincarnation)
Astrea exhaled and moved forward, each step measured, careful not to snap twigs beneath his boots. The forest was silent, too silent, but every shadow seemed alive.
After an hour of climbing, the path narrowed along a rocky ledge, moss slick underfoot. One wrong step could mean a fall several meters deep. He balanced his weight carefully, dagger in hand, scanning for any threats.
Rustle.
A sound came from above.
Astrea froze, his senses screaming. A branch broke, and a pair of glowing yellow eyes blinked down at him from the overhanging cliff. A Tier 1 Fledgling Beast Level 2 pounced without warning.
Astrea rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding the claws of the creature. His dagger flashed as he slashed at its flank, grazing its fur. The beast yelped, then retreated a few paces, circling him warily.
"Of course... more company," he muttered, wiping sweat from his brow. He tossed a small handful of dirt at the beast's eyes. It snarled, shaken, giving him an opening to climb higher along the ledge.
As he scrambled up, the compass glowed faintly. The needle pointed straight up a narrow canyon, the signal of mana stronger. Astrea's lips tightened. This was no ordinary path; he could feel the raw energy vibrating through the stones underfoot.
He pressed on, the narrow trail winding around jagged cliffs, over fallen trees, and past steep drops. At one point, he stumbled into a small brook, water rushing past his boots. The cold water sent a shiver up his spine. He cursed softly but pressed forward. Every second counted.
The compass led him into a small clearing bathed in the pale green glow of mana. The air shimmered faintly, and he could sense the energy pulsing beneath his feet. His eyes widened.
"This is it..."
But before he could relax, a low growl emerged from the underbrush. He tensed. Out of the shadows stepped a small pack of Fledgling Beasts, Tier 1, Level 2, their eyes glinting hungrily.
Astrea gritted his teeth. "Seriously? Right now?"
He ducked behind a rock, pulling the beast repellent from his satchel. He tossed it toward the pack, and violet smoke swirled, causing some of them to hesitate. Not all were affected; one advanced boldly.
Astrea sprang into action, dagger flashing with precise, agile movements. Each strike was aimed to wound, not kill; he needed to conserve energy for the mission. Two beasts retreated into the smoke, confused. The third lunged, and Astrea sidestepped, letting it crash into a fallen tree before slashing its flank.
The pack scattered, leaving Astrea panting but victorious. He wiped his dagger on the moss and crouched, heart pounding. The system interface blinked urgently.

Mission Update: High Mana Concentration Area Reached
Reward: Unlock: Enhanced Mana Detection (Passive)
Remaining Time: 4 Days 15 Hours 45 Minutes
Astrea exhaled, leaning against a tree. The pulsing mana around him made his head swim slightly. The compass had led him to a fertile ground, rich with magical energy. Trees shimmered faintly with life force, and the air itself seemed heavier, charged with potential.
He looked around, thinking. "If I can harness this... this will be perfect for starting something new. Something that doesn't exist yet."
The forest was still, almost too quiet. Astrea crouched low, scanning for movement. Somewhere in the distance, a shadow flickered... large, but distant. He tensed, dagger ready, but no immediate threat appeared. Still, he knew he wasn't alone.
"This world... it's alive," he whispered. Memories of the previous Astrea's life brushed against him again. Orphaned, desperate, limited in knowledge... he had to continue that life, finish that dream.
Astrea moved carefully through the clearing, testing the soil, observing the trees, and noting mana-rich spots. The system pulsed faintly, reminding him of the ticking clock.
While scouting, he noticed a small cave partially hidden by vines. He crouched to peek inside, dagger ready. The air smelled damp, but faintly energetic. Potential shelter... maybe a base of operations, he thought. He made a mental note.
A sudden rustle behind him made him spin. A small rabbit emerged, and he exhaled sharply, lowering the dagger. Even here, the forest had surprises.
He found a shallow stream nearby and quenched his thirst, feeling the mana around him enhancing his senses subtly. He crouched, dipping a hand into the water and letting the energy flow faintly into his body. It was not much, but enough to feel a slight edge in reflexes.
As he rested, Astrea looked at the System Message.

Supplies: Daggers, rope, flint, bedroll, minimal rations
Satisfied, he began plotting the next moves. The terrain ahead became steeper, cliffs more treacherous. Any mistake could end him, and with the system's harsh penalty looming, failure was not an option.
The sun began its descent, casting long shadows across the forest. Astrea scaled another ridge, chest heaving, heart pounding. He paused, checking the compass again. It pointed further into the mountain range, deeper into unknown territory.
"Alright," he muttered, adjusting the dagger in his hand. "Step one... find mana. Step two... survive the mountain. Step three... keep the dream alive."
The forest seemed to hold its breath, the wind whispering through leaves as if acknowledging him. Somewhere, hidden from sight, eyes watched him again... someone, or something, waiting.
Astrea squared his shoulders, dagger ready, and stepped forward. The journey into the heart of the mountain, and toward the foundation of his future, had truly begun.
