C14 Chapter 14: Trials of the Mountain
The morning sun barely pierced the dense canopy as Astrea moved cautiously along the jagged mountain slopes. The plateau from the previous day shimmered faintly with the pulse of mana, yet the terrain around it was unforgiving. Sheer cliffs, loose stones, and treacherous roots threatened every step.

Astrea tightened his cloak around his shoulders and adjusted his daggers. The weight was minimal, but every bit mattered in this climb. He scanned the surrounding area, seeking natural shelters, water sources, and the faint green glow of high mana.
Whoosh.
A sudden gust of wind swept across the plateau, carrying with it loose pebbles that clattered down the mountainside. Astrea crouched low, gripping his daggers. The wind whispered through the jagged rocks, sounding almost like voices. Mocking, or perhaps warning him.
He advanced slowly, testing each step, feeling the energy from the mana-rich stones beneath his boots. The pulse was subtle but detectable. He crouched beside one, placing his hand gently on the surface. A tingling ran through his fingertips, a faint warmth that promised potential, yet demanded respect.
"This could sustain a small structure, or a larger one if fortified properly," he thought, mentally sketching the contours of the plateau.
Rustle.
A sound in the distance caught his attention. Astrea froze, dagger in hand, ears straining. Out of the shadows emerged a small flock of Level 2 Tier 1 Fledgling Beasts, their eyes reflecting the morning sun.
"Not again," he muttered under his breath.
His first instinct was to retreat, but the compass pulsed gently, almost urging him forward. He ducked behind a boulder and retrieved the repellent, tossing it carefully. Violet smoke swirled between him and the beasts, giving him a small window to move.
Darting along the edge of the plateau, he used his agility and knowledge from his thief skills: quick footwork, silent movement, precise strikes. His daggers flashed, striking to wound rather than kill. Two beasts retreated into the smoke, and the third skidded to a stop, snarling, before finally bounding away.
Astrea exhaled heavily. "These mountains are alive."
He continued upward, the plateau giving way to a narrow canyon, where jagged cliffs loomed above like jagged teeth. Loose gravel shifted beneath his boots, and he had to scramble over rocks to maintain balance. The compass pulsed brighter as he approached a faint glow at the canyon's end. A concentrated surge of mana.
Astrea crouched, eyes scanning the area. The energy was strong, enough to sustain magical constructs or power an Academy. But the place was not without danger. A deep crevice split the canyon floor, and the jagged cliffs cast long, ominous shadows.
Suddenly, movement at the edge of his vision drew his attention. A figure, silhouetted against the glow of the mana, watched him silently. Astrea froze, gripping his dagger. The figure remained still, unmoving, almost blending with the shadows of the rocks.
"Who or what is that?" he thought. His heart raced. The observer did not move closer, but the sense of being watched was undeniable.
Astrea tested the mana flow, pressing his hands against the rocks. A faint hum resonated through his body, enhancing his reflexes and agility. He experimented with small gestures, pulling energy, sensing its direction, feeling its concentration points. The plateau was rich, but precise measurement would take time.
The figure watched silently, their eyes reflecting the faint green glow. Astrea's instincts screamed caution, but curiosity edged forward. The figure remained motionless, perhaps assessing him, perhaps something else entirely.
He muttered under his breath, "I don't know who you are, but stay there."
The system pulsed faintly, the interface appearing before his eyes.

Astrea exhaled and focused, ignoring the observer. He mapped the area mentally, noting mana-rich spots, flat areas suitable for construction, and natural barriers that could defend against beasts. The plateau was ideal, perhaps even more than he expected.
As he circled the area, the figure remained at the far edge of the plateau. Astrea's senses tingled; the observer's presence was deliberate, almost protective, yet mysterious. He knew one misstep could reveal his vulnerability, and he had no intention of being surprised.
For hours, he surveyed, measured, and recorded in his mind. The forest below whispered, the rocks hummed faintly, and the wind carried the promise of more discoveries.
When he finally crouched on a flat stone at the center of the plateau, he allowed himself a moment to breathe. The high mana concentration flowed all around him, and he could sense its strength rising and falling with subtle rhythm. He flexed his fingers around his dagger, ready for whatever came next.
The observer, still distant, slowly receded into the shadows, leaving Astrea alone. For now, the plateau was his domain, and the first tangible step toward his vision for the future had been secured.
Astrea exhaled, thoughts racing. The mission timer ticked relentlessly in his mind: 3 Days 19 Hours remaining. Every second mattered. One mistake, one miscalculation, could end everything.
He stood, dagger in hand, eyes sweeping the horizon. The mountains were alive, dangerous, yet full of potential. Somewhere in the distance, the wind whispered, carrying both warnings and promises.
Astrea squared his shoulders. Step one, survive the mountain. Step two, secure mana-rich territory. Step three, bring to life a dream that had never existed.
The observer remained unseen but undeniably present, and Astrea knew the path ahead would test not only his skills but his resolve.
He moved forward, stepping into the heart of the mountain, dagger ready, senses sharpened, and mind focused. The true trial had begun.
