C14 Slaying Secrets

Theo and Crawford stepped out into the cool evening air, a stark contrast to the heated chaos inside. The city was enveloped in a blanket of silence as the last few rays of sunlight faded into night. Theo looked back at the council chambers with burning eyes, her heart heavy with worry and fear. She knew that Silas was up to no good, and she feared for what may become of her and her friends if they were banned from entering Ravensky. In front of them stood Ravensky's walls, their imposing beauty illuminated by the stars in the sky above. It seemed like an eternity before either of them spoke, as if they were both trying to comprehend all that had happened in such a short amount of time.

Finally, Theo broke the silence. "Do you think we can trust the council to make the right decision?" she asked him.

Crawford shrugged his shoulders and looked up at the stars twinkling above them in the night sky. "There's really no telling what they'll decide," he said thoughtfully. "But if I know anything about Silas, it's that he won't let us get too far without a fight."

He paused for a moment and then added with a hint of determination in his voice, "Whatever happens next, we need to be ready for it."

Theo nodded her head in agreement.

"What do we do now?" she asked quietly, her eyes searching Crawford's face for answers.

Crawford sighed heavily and ran his fingers through his hair before turning towards her with a determined expression on his face. "Now," he said firmly, "we wait and prepare for whatever comes our way." He gestured towards Ravensky's gates with an outstretched arm before continuing with conviction in his voice. "There has to be another way back into Ravensky, and it's up to us to find it."

A loud clamor filled the chamber as Buzadu and Pi Stout were dragged out of the council chambers by a handful of guards. Theo held her breath as they approached, her heart pounding with anticipation. She watched in awe as Buzadu was released and given an official pardon with the unanimous consent of the council. As Pi Stout was released too, both were welcomed once more into their circle.

An air of relief settled over them as they stood there.

Theo's stomach churned as the council members filed back into the chamber, their faces cold and expressionless. Her friends shifted nervously on either side of her as the head of the council stepped forward to announce his ruling: a permanent ban from Ravensky until further notice. The other members nodded in agreement - it was safer, they argued among themselves, for Theo and her group to remain away given her lack of knowledge in matters of dark magic.

Theo's lips pressed together to keep her anger in check as she surveyed Silas. He stood rigidly with his arms crossed, an emotionless mask on his face, yet a hint of satisfaction glimmered in his blue eyes. He had finally achieved his goal: Theo and her allies were banned from Ravensky forever.

The magistrate's face went blank, and he gestured to them to follow him. The six allies left the large room with its polished stone floor and tall columns wrapped in vines and followed a winding corridor that led deeper into the security complex at the front of the palace. They passed courtiers and officials dressed in midnight blue garments with silver trim.

Reluctantly, Theo allowed herself to be led away from the chambers, and out into the streets of Ravensky. She felt frustrated and confused - she had come so close to uncovering more information about her father, only to have it blocked by Silas' cruel machinations. The city seemed to be buzzing with energy as Theo and her friends walked its streets.

Theo and her friends stepped into the small alleyway, their eyes drawn to a wooden sign hanging over a door. It was intricately carved with symbols that none of them recognized. The sign read ‘The House of Mysteries’ in bold gold letters.

A shiver ran down Theo's spine as she stepped through the threshold and into the store. As she looked around, she saw shelves lined with ancient books and scrolls containing tales of legends long past; strange artifacts that seemed almost alive; mysterious maps with locations no one could explain; potions occupying every corner.

At the center of it all stood an old man in a deep red robe, eyes twinkling as he surveyed them with curiosity and amusement. "Welcome," he said in a gentle voice that seemed to echo off the walls, "to my humble abode."

He gestured for them to come closer. "I am Daedalus, and this is where I spend my time studying arcane knowledge." He smiled softly at each of them in turn before continuing. "What brings you here today? Have you come seeking answers?"

His words struck a chord within Theo's heart, and she felt compelled to answer his question truthfully. She explained her situation - how she had been banned from Ravensky after falling out of favor with Silas Winterbourne - as well as her desire to learn more about her father's past.

Daedalus nodded, his expression thoughtful as he considered her words. He motioned for them to follow him into another room, this one filled with unfamiliar objects and artifacts that seemed to occupy every corner of the small chamber.

"This," he said softly as he gestured around him, "is a place filled with secrets from ages past - secrets of dark magic I have spent my life trying to uncover."

He paused for a moment before standing up straighter, his eyes fixed on Theo's face intently.

"Within these walls lies a secret that will guide you to discover a map that will aid you in your mission, but first you must seek out an object that can align itself to point the way to the true north."

Daedalus gave a slight nod in agreement as Theo recollected the compass she was awarded upon successfully completing the test on the first day.

She produced the compass and held it out in her hand. As soon as Theo touched the small object, it began to glow with an eerie blue light and began to point in a specific direction rather than the usual up, down, left, right. Theo followed the direction that the object pointed her and eventually arrived at a hidden wall of thick foliage. On closer inspection she could make out a carving outlined in ivy of what appeared to be a map of some unrecognizable land beyond Ravensky. Trees, mountains and rivers were all depicted with vivid details that seemed to come alive as she looked closer.

Theo took out a pair of gloves from her pocket and started carefully removing the ivy from around the edges of the map. Underneath all this time-worn foliage was an incredibly detailed etching of a faraway land with countless places she had never heard before; unknown rivers snaking through mysterious forests; tall spires reaching for towering mountains shrouded by clouds; distant castles carved within overlooked valleys; ancient ruins teeming with secrets waiting to be unlocked beneath its crumbling walls… It was as though a whole new world had opened up before Theo's eyes!

As she studied this strange new place mapped out before her, something caught her eye: A tiny symbol etched into one corner of this foreign landscape - an entrance that led back into Ravensky. "How many hidden places are there in Ravensky?" She asked studying the maps lines. "Hundreds, if not thousands." Buzadu answered standing next to her also examining the same area of the map. "Would it do?" Theo asked again. "It'll have to." Crawford answered from behind them.

She quickly glanced over its surface before looking back up at Daedalus, overwhelmed with gratitude.

Daedalus smiled knowingly, his blue eyes twinkling with delight at Theo's discovery. "Now you have both the map and the clue," he said softly. "You must use your wits to figure out what lies at its destination."

With that final thought lingering in the air, Theo quickly used her cellphone to take a couple of pictures of the map and bid farewell to Daedalus - thanking him for all his help in their journey ahead. With that done, they followed the direction indicated by her mysterious compass until it pointed towards a hidden path leading outside Ravensky’s city walls-a path no one had ventured down for a long time. Taking a deep breath, Theo summoned her courage and made her way down this unknown road-following behind Crawford and Buzadu. Way, Lyaanna and Pi followed behind her as they snaked through the narrow road through corridors. Where it would take her once more into danger, this she was sure of.

They barreled through the last bend, all but flying from the chamber door and into the unforgiving night air. Crawford took a deep breath before turning to his comrades, gesturing to a nearby hillside. "We may have no other choice," he said as he studied the rocky terrain. "If the council refuses our plea for amnesty, then I believe we can sneak in." He pointed to an almost impossible to see place on the far horizon. "The entrance is hidden between two large rocks near the summit of that hill," he continued. His companions stared at him skeptically, their eyes wide with apprehension, but Crawford was determined. "This may be our only chance at getting back inside 'The White Castle'."

"Theo's heart raced as her body filled with anticipation. Her mouth was dry as she croaked out a warning, "No, it's too dangerous. We can't go back there!" The thought of challenging the unyielding guards of Zandra sent shivers of excitement down her spine, yet the trepidation at risking her father's life weighed heavily on her mind. With a gulp of courage, she steeled herself for what she must do.

Way bellowed from behind Theo: "Are we throwing in the white towel?" His face scrunched with worry. "And your dear old dad? Are we giving up on him languidly stewing in oblivion?"

“Do I look like I would?” Theo sneered, viciously flinging a glare in Way's direction.

Lyaanna's face was stone cold and her voice a thunderous roar as she bellowed, "Theo is right. We can't just barge into 'The White Castle' unprepared. Last time we were lucky, but this time our luck may run out!"

"Our reputations are on the line!" Buzadu bellowed, and some of the group nodded in agreement. "We can get them back," Theo said with an intensity that echoed, "But we must stay away from that entrance - it would be a death sentence if anyone found out about it." The group fell silent as Theo's words hung in the air. "We need to keep moving," she repeated, her voice no longer expressionless but quivering with determination.

Pi's words hung in the air like a weight. Theo nodded silently, her eyes narrowed and determined as she plunged further into the dimly lit chambers. Her steps resounded with purpose, and before long she was swallowed up by the shadows. This time, there would be no turning back – they had finally uncovered some of the truth.

“Frabilous day for a stroll in the outdoors!" Way bellowed. "Do we really have to journey back into that dismal abyss again? Not fair!” He whined, trailing after the others in a series of exaggerated stomps.

Having returned to Ravensky, the group agree to collect what they can in the amount of time they have before guards come to escort them out of town. Crawford motions for Theo to accompany him while the others gather their belongings.

Theo followed Crawford through the winding corridors of Ravensky and out onto the terrace, where they were surrounded by the lush greenery of a nearby forest. The sun was slowly setting, casting a golden hue across the sky as birds twittered in the trees above their heads. Theo's head was spinning at the illusion as in Ravensky you never know what is real and what is not. They were still underground and that could never be the real sun but it sure felt like it.

"We'll be able to uncover more information about your father while we are here, inside Ravensky." said Crawford, his voice breaking through Theo's reverie. "But it may take some time - especially since Silas, after today, is obstructing us from entering Ravensky proper." He paused for a moment before continuing. "I think it's best if we explore the city on our own and see what we can find out. I'm sure with our combined efforts we'll be able to uncover something that will help us uncover more."

With that, Theo's heart sank into her stomach and she let out a deep sigh. She had been so close to finally finding some answers about her enigmatic father; now it seemed as if she was further away than ever before.

Still determined to uncover the truth, Theo decided that before leaving Ravensky for good she would take one last chance on fate and visit the house where she was born - the same house that her father had stayed in once upon a time.

She gave Crawford a stern nod.

"Meet me back at the Fountain of Light by the entrance to Ravensky in a few hours." And with that they went their separate ways.

As she walked through the cobblestone streets towards her childhood home, Theo felt a wave of nostalgia wash over. But as she approached the house, it looked eerily empty and silent - not unlike how it had before. She let out a long sigh as tears began streaming down her cheeks, overwhelmed by a sense of sadness and loss that threatened to consume her.

Theo stepped up to the front door, slowly pushing it open before stepping inside. Light spilled into the room from the large windows, casting an inviting glow across furniture that appeared unused for many years. She breathed in deeply, savoring what remained of familiar scents. She walked deeper into the living room when suddenly, her eyes fell upon an old journal lying on the desk. She quickly grabbed it and flipped to the first page, barely believing what she read there. It was a letter from her father, dated shortly before his disappearance.

In it he spoke of finding a mysterious relic hidden deep within Ravensky – something powerful enough that it could stop Zandra's evil plans! He wrote of scouring through ancient texts in search of clues and promised to come back soon with the answers they needed. But that was it, the last entry.

Theo marveled at this newfound knowledge – could this really be their key to saving Ravensky?

She tucked the journal away safely in her backpack and slipped it on her back.

Just as she was about to turn and leave, she heard a voice call out from behind her.

"Theo?" the voice said, slow and gruff. Theo turned around to see an old man standing in the doorway. He wore a stained coat and had thinning, grey hair that hung loosely across his forehead. "Do I know you?" she asked, eyes darting back and forth between his face and the door frame.

Theo took a moment before answering, realizing that he must have been one of the people who knew her father from back in Ravensky's past. She took a deep breath before responding, emboldened by this chance encounter with someone who might be able to provide her with vital clues about her father's whereabouts.

"Yes," she said finally, taking a step forward towards him. "I'm Theo – daughter of Phillip Finley." The old man smiled knowingly at her words and nodded his head in recognition before continuing on into the house.

He gently took hold of Theo's hand and led her deeper into the house, pointing out the various chambers as he regaled her with tales of her father's greatness.

"Phillip was a man of much regard here in this village," he said proudly in his thick accent. "Though, ever since I can remember, your papa has always been one to keep himself busy - tinkering away inside his workshop for hours on end with all sorts of trinkets that'd arrive from his travels."

Theo looked up at him quizzically as he paused, making sure she was paying attention.

"But...one day, quite unexpectedly, he vanished without a trace. No one knew why or when he left, just that...he was gone."

"Did you know him well?" Theo asked inquisitively.

The old man nodded slowly, his eyes betraying the memory of days long gone. "I've known your family for a good while. When they moved in, I was one of the few living around here. Your parents were quite fond of each other; she never stopped smiling when he was around. But something changed when he went missing. Your mother's world fell apart."

Theo remained silent, processing every word he had said. Eventually she mustered up the courage to ask him one more question; "Do you know why I wouldn't remember living in this house? It's almost as if I never did."

The old man shook his head as if he wish he had some answers for her, but none ever came.

Theo thanked him for his time and hospitality before he turned to leave when suddenly something caught her eye – a glimmer of light emanating from the back corner of the room. Once the old man had left and the door closed behind him, excitedly she rushed over to investigate further, finding that a secret door had been cleverly hidden in the wall. Curiosity now fully piqued, Theo grabbed hold of the handle and pulled. To her amazement, it opened with ease and revealed a secret passageway beyond!

Theo couldn't contain her excitement as she stepped into the corridor, taking in all its breathtaking details - intricately carved stone walls lined with bookshelves, antique lanterns suspended from stone arches illuminating their way forward and even ancient tapestries hung along sections of wall. The passage seemed to go on for miles before ending at what appeared to be a large portcullis gate leading into an unknown part of Ravensky.

Theo's heart raced with anticipation.

She stepped forward, the air around her becoming colder and thicker the closer she got to the gate. The portcullis slowly creaked open as Theo passed through, revealing a dark underground chamber beyond.

Theo gasped as her eyes adjusted to the darkness. Stalactites hung from the ceiling above, casting eerie shadows across an expansive passageway of tunnels and corridors that seemed to go on forever. Everything was silent except for an eerie hum that echoed off the walls - almost like a distant whisper coming from somewhere deep within these forgotten caverns.

With a newfound sense of courage and determination, Theo journeyed into this unknown part of Ravensky, following whatever mysterious path it may lead her down. Who knows what secrets would be revealed or what obstacles would have to be overcome? All she knew was that she had to keep going - no matter what happened next.

She drew in a deep breath to steady her nerves before pushing the second gate forward. With a loud creak and groan, it slowly opened to reveal a winding path leading down into an eerie, mist-covered area filled with unknown danger.

Theo cautiously stepped through the ancient stone archway, and a thick, ethereal fog enveloped her, creating an otherworldly ambiance that sent shivers down her spine. The air was heavy with a sense of mystery and enchantment as she ventured further into the heart of the maze.

Each step brought something new, a labyrinthine marvel that seemed to defy the laws of reality. Hidden passageways beckoned to her from all directions, veiled by illusions that tested her senses and instincts. She could feel the presence of hidden secrets lurking just beyond her vision, waiting to be unveiled.

Mysterious statues stood sentinel atop ornate pedestals, their features worn by the passage of time, yet still imbued with an enigmatic aura. Their stony gazes seemed to follow her every move, as if silently challenging her to decipher their purpose.

Strange symbols, etched into the walls with an otherworldly glow, seemed to whisper arcane secrets of a forgotten age. They formed intricate patterns and glyphs, their meanings eluding her, like pieces of a grand puzzle waiting to be solved.

The maze appeared to have a life of its own, as if it had been crafted by some divine hand or ancient magic. The very walls seemed to shift and change, rearranging the paths before her like a celestial dance.

As Theo ventured deeper into the maze, she encountered traps that tested her quick wit and dexterity. Pressure plates triggered hidden mechanisms, causing stone walls to shift and close off paths, challenging her to think on her feet and find alternate routes. Each step was a gamble, and she had to rely on her intuition to distinguish the dangerous from the benign.

Riddles adorned the walls, their cryptic messages posing intellectual challenges at every corner. The enigmatic verses demanded clever interpretations, their answers serving as keys to unlock hidden passages and secure her progression through the maze.

Theo's heart raced with anticipation and excitement, her senses heightened as she navigated through the mystical labyrinth. The very essence of magic seemed to pulse around her, a symphony of arcane energies that fueled her determination.

At times, the fog would lift, revealing breathtaking scenes of breathtaking beauty—enchanting gardens with vibrant flora and fauna, celestial pools reflecting starlit skies, and mesmerizing waterfalls cascading from unseen heights. Yet, the beauty concealed danger, for these ethereal sceneries hid concealed challenges that only the brave and resourceful could overcome.

With each twist and turn, Theo delved deeper into the maze's secrets, drawn ever closer to its heart. The puzzles tested her intellect, the traps tested her agility, and the mysteries challenged her spirit.

As she navigated the maze, she felt a profound connection with the ancient powers that had crafted it. It was as if the maze recognized her potential, presenting her with trials to unlock her true abilities. She could feel the energy of the place intertwining with her own, the handle of her magical sword glowing with a vibrant green hue, reacting to the enchantments that surrounded her.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity of exploration, Theo made it to a large chamber at the end of the passageway. In its center stood a massive flat stone structure with a single glowing crystal placed atop it - the source of the mysterious hum that had echoed within these chambers.

Theo slowly approached the stone structure, her heart pounding in her chest as she reached out towards the crystal. As soon as she touched it, an explosion of energy surged through her body - a sensation beyond anything she'd ever felt before. It was as if this power was waiting just for her - calling out for someone who was worthy of receiving it.
