C4 Chapter 4
Per policy, during detention, all suspects’ communication devices are confiscated to prevent contact with the outside world that could lead to destroyed or even fabricated evidence. But as a suspect, Hee Yu still had the right to hire an attorney—for bail and for her defense.
The moment she got her phone back, Hee Yu dialed the private number on the business card Yan Jin had carefully left her.
She couldn’t predict what the unhinged Hee Zheng and Zhuh Qingwen might do next. But if Hee Zheng was bold enough to set his sights on her mother’s gravesite, Hee Yu couldn’t stay calm anymore.
It was the only thing in this world she truly cared about. She couldn’t allow even the slightest chance that someone might vandalize her mother’s resting place.
In the quiet interrogation room, Hee Yu held her breath, able to hear her own heart pounding hard against her ribs.
She didn’t know what it would cost to make this call for help.
But no matter the price, she wouldn’t regret it.
Because it was worth it.
But fate seemed determined to mess with her. No matter how desperately Hee Yu screamed in her head, Pick up. Pick up!, the only answer she got was the endless, merciless “beep… beep… beep…”
“Sorry, the person you are calling is unavailable. Please try again later.”
Even on the fifth call to the number on the card, the same flat, emotionless female voice answered. It was enough to make her feel like Yan Jin had been playing her from the start.
“Miss Hee, I suggest you try another attorney, so you don’t waste any more time.” The officer supervising her call was growing impatient, a hint of mockery creeping onto his face.
Hee Yu gave in.
She had no other choice. If Yan Jin wouldn’t help her, there was no way she could get out of this hellhole anytime soon.
God only knew what Hee Zheng and Zhuh Qingwen might do before she could figure something else out—things lower than low.
Digging her fingers into her scalp, Hee Yu ran through everyone she knew, but there was no one who could stand up to the Hee Family.
“Creak…” The interrogation room door was pushed open again. The officer who’d been watching Hee Yu stepped in.
But this time, the impatience on his face was gone, replaced by an almost servile friendliness. “Miss Hee, you’re free to go.”
Hee Yu blinked, caught off guard. Still, before she let herself get carried away, she forced herself to stay calm. “Can you tell me why?”
“Yan’s Group’s chief counsel has already handled your defense, so you’re being released with no charges,” the officer explained, unusually patient and respectful.
Yan’s Group was the kind of powerhouse that dominated half the city’s business world. People said their legal team never lost when they took a case—one of the reasons the company could do whatever it wanted in the corporate arena.
But for a minor assault allegation—one that hadn’t even made it past the initial holding stage—to bring in Yan’s Group’s in-house heavy hitters… that wasn’t overkill. It was absurd.
No wonder the officer was looking at Hee Yu differently now.
As for Yan Jin’s visit, a low-ranking cop like him had no way of knowing the details.
Hee Yu gave a small nod. Her expression stayed cool, but inside, her thoughts churned like a storm.
Yan Jin had left her a personal business card. Other than his name, phone number, and email, there was nothing on it that hinted at who he really was. The only reason she’d reached out was the feeling she’d gotten from his earlier visit—
That he could make anything happen.
What she hadn’t expected—never in a million years—was that the stranger she’d slept with was part of the Yan Family.
Someone who could mobilize Yan’s Group’s go-to legal team, and who was around thirty… there was only one person that could be.
With her nerves tight, Hee Yu stepped out of the interrogation room—and came face-to-face with an older man in his fifties.
“I’m Yan’s Group’s legal adviser,” he said. “Director Yan asked me to represent you regarding the alleged assault. The injured party has already come in personally to tell the police it was all a misunderstanding and has withdrawn the complaint. That’s why you’re being released, Miss Hee.”
The older man who’d been determined to fight to the bitter end had suddenly dropped the case without a fuss. It was obvious Yan Jin had played a key role.
“I couldn’t reach Director Yan earlier. Please thank him in person for me,” Hee Yu said, bowing deeply in gratitude.
She didn’t know why he’d helped her yet refused to take her calls, but she’d been saved—plain and simple.
The lawyer hurriedly waved his hands, stepping aside to avoid the bow. Instead, he gestured toward the police station entrance and said, “Director Yan has already sent a car to pick you up. If you want to thank him, you can do it face-to-face.”
Hee Yu hesitated for a moment, then quickly agreed.
He’d already slept with her—what was the point of being scared now?
Even if it was walking straight into a trap, so what? If it meant spending another night with him, what difference did it make?
