C7 ACROSS THE BORDER

THE HYBRID'S CURSE

BY JINX

CHAPTER 7: ACROSS THE BORDER

“Yes, ma’am, I will come back as soon as possible.” Romeo said grinning as he kissed her once last time before leaving their room.

He got downstairs and met Liam sitting on a couch. Immediately Liam saw him he stood up.

“Are you ready?” Liam asked.

“Hell yeah, remember you are in charge.”

“What of Nia. What did she say?”

“That I better get my ass back here as soon as I can.” Romeo said sheepishly.

“Better her than me saying it then, but really, come back alive.” Liam said patting his back.

“I will…. try.” Romeo said as he left.

Romeo got to the gate and met his guards standing at their duty post already in their wolf form, he transformed to his own wolf, but it was slightly bigger than the rest, with its massive black hairs. He howled at them and they howled back in response, then he took off running into the woods.

Doctor M. Bradford was doing her night rounds in the hospital, checking up on her patients. She entered ward 112 where a little boy laid.

“Scott, how are you doing today?” She asked as she entered the ward.

A little boy of about 6 with bald head and freckled nose smiled at her.

“Hey doctor Bradford I am doing ok I guess.” Scott said.

“That’s what I want to hear, just take your medications when due, and soon you will be discharged.” She said.

“I will try to do so, doctor Bradford.” Scott said.

“What did I say about you calling me doctor, you can stick to Mia, it’s okay?” She said touching his cheeks.

“Okay, miss Mia.”

“Good, isn’t that better?”

“It is, can I ask you a question, miss Mia?” Scott said trying to relax well on the bed.

“Yes, you can ask me anything.” She said sitting beside him on the bed.

“Is there really a cure for cancer?” Scott asked slowly.

“Yes, there is, dear, aren’t you getting better. You can feel it, don’t you?” She said placing her hand on his chest.

“I can feel it, but every day, my mummy comes here crying her heart out. I keep telling her that the doctor said I will be fine, but she still keeps crying.” Scott said getting teary eyed too.

“Don’t you dare cry. Aren’t you a big boy? You promised me that I won’t see any tears on your beautiful face, didn’t you?”

“I did, I am sorry. I forgot.” Scott said trying to smile.

“Your mum is crying tears of happiness ok. She’s so happy that you are coming home soon, that’s why she is crying.”

Ok, if you say so, but when she comes tomorrow, help me convince her not to cry anymore.”

“I will, I promise. Now get some rest ok?”

“Good night miss Mia.”

“Good night Scott.” Mia said kissing him on the forehead as he closed his eyes.

She went out of the ward soundlessly, she leaned outside the door as she took a shaky deep breath.

One of the nurses passed her and greeted as she nodded her head in reply.

She went on her rounds that was left, and found that the patients were already asleep.

Her shift ended by 7pm but because of the workload that she had, she decided to stay for extra time.

“Dr. Bradford.” A voice called out startling her from her trance.

“Oh, hey, Dr. McCall. How is it going?”

“Good I guess, wait why are you still here?”

“Pardon?” Mia said confused.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean it that way, I thought your shift ended at 7. You are not on night rounds are you?”

“No, I am not. Actually I am just heading home, as soon as I lock up my office, and tidy up my stuffs.”

“Ok, I see. But do that fast, the woods surrounding this clinic is dangerous at night.”

“I have nothing to fear, but nevertheless, I guess I better get going.” She said as she went towards the direction of her office.

Immediately she entered her office and closed the door, she heard a voice

“Hello, Dr. Bradford or should I say Mia.”

Mia turned as Alpha Romeo came into view. He was sitting on her chair twirling a pencil in between his fingers.

“No, no. what are you doing here? You can’t be here.” Lily said, switching on the light.

“That’s certainly no way for you to greet your alpha.” Romeo said as he broke the pencil.

“What do you want?” Mia asked.

“What do I want? You know what I want. And you still want me to spell it out for you.” Romeo said standing up.

“I am sorry, but if this is what you came for, then I am afraid that I am going to have to disappoint you”.

“Wow, so you dare defy me, even face to face. Wow, you really have grown.”

“I am not the same Mia who left the pack, six months ago. I am different now.” She said with a firm voice.

“I know you aren’t, you are stronger, braver, more composed and matured, but underneath that, you are still my little sister so why did you leave?”

“I am not having this conversation with you. Please leave.” Mia said.

“we are having this conversation, come on, I don’t understand this, why did you leave the pack, where you were taking care of our sick and wounded and relocate to a town, where you are taking care of the sick and wounded. I mean why leave?”

“Don’t ask me that question, back home, I was sewing back guts that spilled out of their bodies, but here, I am taking care of people, people with ordinary sickness, and I treat them and they go back home safe and sound. And do you want to know what the best plan of it is, I know that they are not running into some worthless battle to kill themselves. That’s why I left.” she said.

“You have got to understand us, we are in a war, and these things happen.”

“This war cost us our family, mum is dead, dad is missing, I mean when was the last time you actually heard from our brother. Oh, wait he hates you.” she replied.

“Do you hate me too?” Romeo asked holding her hands.

“Don’t bring this up. I don’t hate you, I know you did what had to be done, but don’t you dare think I will forgive you, not now anyways. That was also one of the reasons why I left.”

“What do you want from me Mia, tell me please?”

“I want nothing from you, just for you to leave.”

“What about the wolves? They need you. Sandra your apprentice is overwhelmed. Sometimes I wish you would broaden your views, I know what you are saying from your point.
