C46 You Guys Really Know How to Play!
"The advertising company transferred the $60,000 to us!" Su Mumu exclaimed with excitement.
Xiong Miao was slow to react, and after a moment, she finally caught on. "What are you saying?"
"You heard me right, the payment for the kids' commercial has been sent out," Su Mumu reiterated, eager to make sure Xiong Miao believed her.
Instead of feeling elated, Xiong Miao was filled with concern.
"Does this mean the children's clothing commercial is going to air?" she asked anxiously. In this city, every corner was under Zhan Yeling's watch. Even if by some fluke Zhan Yeling didn't recognize the six little ones in his fit of rage that day, it didn't guarantee he wouldn't recognize them later on.
A strong sense of impending danger suddenly overwhelmed Xiong Miao.
"No, that's not the case. The ad agency told me that the director wasn't happy with how the commercial turned out and was concerned it would tarnish the company's image, so it's not going to be released," Su Mumu explained, recalling the call she received from Rich Group's advertising department earlier that day.
"Then why pay us?" Xiong Miao questioned skeptically. "Why would those swindlers just hand over sixty thousand dollars for no reason?"
Su Mumu chuckled, "Maybe it's because we confronted Director Zhan in his office a few days ago, and the children's heartfelt pleas moved him."
Su Mumu was beginning to think that Zhan Yeling wasn't as terrible as she had imagined.
Lost in her daydreams, she was abruptly brought back to reality by a tap on the head from Xiong Miao.
"Get real. If he's moved, I'll eat my hat," Xiong Miao retorted, her disdain for Zhan Yeling evident.
"Do you have something against Zhan Yeling? Regardless, he is their father," Su Mumu blurted out without thinking.
Her words nearly made Xiong Miao silence her on the spot.
"Never say that in front of me again, or you might give us away. I've hidden the children for so long, I don't want to be exposed because of a careless comment," Xiong Miao warned. Those six little ones were her world.
She may have once been a vulnerable woman, but as a mother, she was a force to be reckoned with, having weathered many storms over the years.
Su Mumu pouted, "I know I was wrong."
As Xiong Miao's best friend, she was well aware of what Xiong Miao was thinking.
"By the way, why did you get home so late today?" Su Mumu suddenly remembered.
Normally, if she was going to work late, she would give her a heads-up with a phone call.
But today, there hadn't been a single call.
"I caught a cold and passed out on the street," Xiong Miao said dismissively.
"What!" Su Mumu's jaw nearly hit the floor as she grabbed Xiong Miao's shoulders. "Xiong Miao, if you keep pushing yourself like this, it's going to be the death of you!"
"It's not from overworking; I caught a chill last night in the breeze."
"Why on earth were you out in the cold last night wearing so little? Have you lost your mind?" Su Mumu gave her forehead a gentle push.
"Director Zhan suddenly needed a female companion for a banquet, so I was roped in," Xiong Miao explained with a sigh.
"Ah!" Su Mumu shrieked, only to have her mouth swiftly covered by Xiong Miao. "Shh, keep it down. Don't wake everyone up."
Su Mumu's eyes went wide as she swallowed her surprise, leaning in close and asking dramatically, "Are you two an item now?"
"What are you thinking? It's strictly a business arrangement; he paid for my time."
"What, that's actually a thing?" Su Mumu's illusions were shattered.
"What else did you expect?" Xiong Miao shot her a look. This girl's imagination really did run wild.
"You guys really know how to live it up," Su Mumu remarked, half in awe. "So, how much did he pay you?"
