C2 Chapter

Luke pinned Brooke Sanders down, his fangs gleaming as he prepared to bite into her neck. Suddenly, he recoiled, his hand burning where it touched the cross necklace around Brooke's neck. Taking advantage of his momentary distraction, Brooke kicked him off and bolted out of the mausoleum. As she sprinted through the cemetery, the sounds of growling and a terrified shriek reached her ears. She turned to find Lila pinned by a vampire. Brooke shouted, "Hey!" before delivering a powerful kick to the vampire, sending him sprawling. She quickly dispatched two more vampires attacking Ethan. However, there was no sign of James. The next morning, Brooke, Ethan, and Lila gathered in the school library. Mr. Grayson spun a globe, his voice grave as he recounted the history of demons. Earth was once ruled by these ancient beings until they lost their supremacy. The last demon to leave had fed on a human, creating the first vampire. Ethan, eager to help, asked how to kill vampires, but Brooke firmly insisted that it was her job alone.Meanwhile, in the subterranean lair, Marcus expressed his suspicion to the Patriarch that Brooke was the Slayer. The Patriarch, undeterred, decided to use James as bait to lure Brooke into a trap before the Harvest, which would allow him to ascend.Back in the library, Lila demonstrated her computer skills by hacking into the city's sewer plans. Brooke realized that Luke had attacked her from behind, indicating that the mausoleum was an entrance to the tunnels.Brooke sneaked out to the cemetery during daylight hours. In the mausoleum, she encountered the mysterious figure from the night before. They exchanged barbs, and she finally got a name: Shadow. He revealed that the Harvest would happen that night, allowing the Patriarch to walk free. When Brooke questioned why he wouldn't stop it himself, Shadow admitted he was too scared. He tried to dissuade her from entering the tunnels, but Brooke pressed on, driven by a sense of duty and urgency. In the sewers, Ethan caught up with Brooke. Though frustrated that he ignored her advice, she begrudgingly let him join her, lending him a cross and explaining the ways to kill a vampire. They found James, but it quickly became clear it was a trap. Surrounded, James led them to a supposed exit, only to reveal his betrayal. Ethan used the cross to keep James at bay long enough for Brooke to throw him into the other vampires. They escaped through a ceiling vent, emerging into the safety of daylight. In the Patriarch's lair, a ritual took place. The Patriarch fed Marcus from his wrist and painted a symbol on his forehead, making Marcus the "vessel." Every person Marcus drained would bring the Patriarch one step closer to freedom.Brooke and Ethan returned to the library with bad news. Mr. Grayson and Lila were deep in research. Mr. Grayson explained that the Patriarch was an ancient vampire trapped in a space-time bubble for sixty years after a failed attempt to open the Hellmouth. He confirmed that the Harvest would enable the Patriarch to escape, and the symbol of the vessel indicated that the vampires would be at the Bronze. At the Bronze, Veronica held court, oblivious to the danger. James, with newfound confidence, led her to the dance floor. The vampires arrived, killing the lights and music. Marcus took the stage, preparing to feed on the crowd. Veronica turned to see James in his vampiric form, leering at her.Brooke and the others arrived to find the entrances locked. She instructed Mr. Grayson, Ethan, and Lila to focus on evacuating the club. Ethan worried about James, but Mr. Grayson reminded him that James was now a demon. Brooke broke in through an upper window and identified Marcus as the vessel. As Marcus prepared to feed on Veronica, Brooke intervened, throwing a vampire off the catwalk. Marcus, intrigued, released Veronica and turned his attention to Brooke. As they fought, the others began evacuating the club. Ethan rushed to save Veronica from James, who taunted Ethan about his new undead status. Ethan hesitated to stake his former friend, but a fleeing girl bumped into them, inadvertently causing James to be staked.Brooke faced off against Marcus, using a cymbal stand as a weapon. Marcus scoffed at her choice, but she tricked him into thinking sunrise had arrived by hurling the stand at a light, causing him to cower. Taking advantage, Brooke staked him from behind."It's in about nine hours, moron," she quipped. In his lair, the Patriarch screamed in frustration as his plan unraveled. Shadow, observing from the shadows, marveled at Brooke's success. "She did it. I'll be damned."The next day at school, Veronica gossiped about "gangs on PCP," while Ethan suggested a school assembly to address the incident. Mr. Grayson explained the phenomenon of Sunnydale Syndrome, where people rationalize the supernatural. He warned them to be prepared for future threats, as Sunnydale was a Hellmouth. Brooke, ever the optimist, planned to look on the bright side and get through high school. As Brooke, Ethan, and Lila walked away, Mr. Grayson adjusted his glasses, muttering to himself, "The earth is doomed."
