C16 On the Other Side

At first, Gu Tianqi didn't care for Du Xiaoxiao. In fact, the woman had already dissipated to the back of his mind, never to be seen again. But it was different now. Now, all he could think of was the way she held his hand or the way she leaned against the young man. The thoughts made him grip the wheel even tighter.

If Zheng Yue were to have seen all of this, then he'd surely be surprised by the way he was acting. In fact, he'd even be a little bit amused.

Sometimes, people contradict themselves in the name of love. The only problem was that he didn't really know what he was feeling right now. His fingers twitched.

Du Xiaoxiao had no idea how angry Gu Tianqi was. She didn't even know that he had tried to find her. Instead, she turned to Du Hengyu with furrowed eyebrows. "Why are you here anyway?" she asked. "Did you know that I'm here?"

The Charm Hotel was located in a very privileged area. No ordinary person would be caught dead in an area like this, especially if they're at risk of pissing someone off. No matter how capable or intelligent her brother was, he didn't have enough to spend in such a luxurious area.

"I didn't know you were here, but I did know you were out with Chu Yinyin," he slowly said. His eyebrows were raised. "My friend also invited me over for some afternoon tea. I didn't really think that we'd run into each other."

However, Du Xiaoxiao wasn't even listening to his rambles anymore. Instead, her mind shifted to Chu Yinyin.

Although she had asked her friend to go back first, she knew that Chu Yinyin's stubborn personality wouldn't have allowed her to abandon a friend like that. She must be waiting right out the parking lot!

Pulling away from him, she briefly apologized, "Huanyu, I forgot about Yinyin! I should call her now."

"I–" Before he could even reply, Du Xiaoxiao had already grabbed her phone and raced away. She didn't even notice the way his gaze had gradually darkened. He shoved his hands into his pockets as he stared at the tall buildings before him.

In his backpack were a bunch of knives, black leather clothes, and even two pistols. They were hidden in small compartments to avoid any frivolous inspections. The last thing he needed was for his sister to find out about his past.

He didn't need to tell her what his job was, or how gruesome it could be.

Just then, at the back door of the Empire Hotel, three streets away from the hotel Du Xiaoxiao had come from, was a man lying in a pool of blood.

"He's here!" With a shout, a few people rushed into the back alley entrance. All of them surrounded the lying man as they crouched down, hovering over the quivering body. "Sir! Sir! Are you okay? Can you hear us?"

The pale man trembled as he struggled to open his eyes. A bright beam of light blinded him as he wrenched away from their grip. "Shan?" he stuttered out. "Am I–I'm alive?"

Shan gazed at the wounds the man had sustained before breathing a sigh of relief. "You're fine, you're fine," he comforted. "Fortunately, your wounds didn't hurt any of your vital organs. I'm sure the doctors could take care of your injuries."

"Second Brother, who the hell did this to you? Who in their right mind would even try? I–I even brought my men to–"

As soon as Hei Zi spoke, the man grabbed him by the arm. Fear flashed across his eyes. "Don't be impulsive," he stated. "That man–it was obvious that he didn't intend to take my life. This...this matter should be observed more closely."

Shan's gaze narrowed at the blade sitting beside the man. It glinted under the sunlight, and upon taking a closer look, he could see that it was shaped like a leaf. His heart trembled. "Look at the blade," he said. "The person–he must've been the Young Lord of the Shanxia Group!"

Hei Zi had been so impatient in hunting down the assailant. However, as soon as he heard who the man was, he was immediately dispirited.

The Shanxia Group was the biggest gang in A City. Even if they were legitimate and well-known, they couldn't afford to offend them. Not to mention, they were just a small gang. Even their boss would've stabbed them if they dared offend someone from that group.

However...

"Second Brother, how could you have offended the Young Lord?" One man panicked from the side. "We have never done any deals with them, right?"

Shan, who was still scanning at Second Brother's wound, glanced up. "Let's talk about it later, all right? He's still bleeding," he commanded. "Let's get in the car and get him bandaged up first."

Immediately, everyone gathered around the young man as they carried him into the car.

"Second Brother, the Shanxia Group has their eyes on you," Shan slowly stated. "Do you think it's because of the trial?"

The man smiled bitterly. "You're right."

Hei Zi frowned. His gaze wandered back and forth from the two men before stating, "What do you mean? What's happening?"

"The Shanxia Group has one rule–if they ever chose their candidate, then they must go to all extents to test that man. These tests would be selected by the leaders of other groups, and the candidates must overcome them with their strength and ability. Over ten years ago, Shanxia Group has rebelled and the gang leader had been suppressed. His son has long since disappeared." Shan drummed his fingers against the leather seat. "It seemed that he had now returned, and he is subjected to a series of trials. As long as he completed the trials, he'd be able to return. If he couldn't, then he'd live in exile. If he died, then it shows that his strength was just insufficient."

Hei Zi nodded. "So the reason Second Brother is being targeted is that he's known as the most powerful person from our gang? That's it? It's because of his short darts, right?"

Shen nodded. "No one can dodge Second Brother's darts as long as they're within five meters. That must've been why the Young Lord had come to find him." He gazed at the older man. "He must've come to challenge you, didn't he?"

The older man sighed. "I was careless. It seemed that I've underestimated the Young Lord–the man's just terrifying." He shook his head. "If he takes over the Shanxia Group in the future, the gang would definitely become even more powerful."

Hei Zi scowled. "How powerful is he anyway? How many times did you hit him?"

There was a long pause before he responded, "Not once."

The car suddenly became stagnant. Shan's hand on the steering wheel had slipped, and even Hei Zi was shocked to silence. Second Brother smiled bitterly. "I won't say any more. The only fortunate thing that had happened was that he didn't kill me. That only means that he wouldn't be looking at my direction in the future," he slowly said. "It also means he might give me some face once he takes over."

However, even then, Second Brother couldn't help but think back to the fight he just had. The Young Lord was really terrifying. Being an assassin, he had always been confident in his aim, and that's because he never missed! He had reached the step where he had become infamous across the city, yet it seemed that the Young Lord had already surpassed him unknowingly.

With his dark mask and unhesitating actions, there was just this unsuppressed strength radiating from him.

What made him so strong?

People who lived in the dark would never understand how Du Hengyu, who had grown a normal life of love and comfort, would become the most ruthless gangster they had ever seen. It seemed that he was born out of love, and that determination is what pushed him to try even harder.

The sky gradually darkened, and Du Xiaoxiao finally managed to coax the angry Chu Yinyin to return home. She then carried the cake her friend had bought her and followed Du Hengyu back.

"Hey," Chu Yinyin whispered, once they were sure that they were out of earshot. "What happened between you and Gu Tianqi?"

"Nothing." She looked away. "He just reprimanded me."
