C17 I'm Pregnant
"Stay here and keep an eye on things. I have to head downstairs. Find someone quick on their feet to keep the guests company, and let me know if anything comes up," Wen Mian instructed, adjusting her expression.
As she stepped out of the elevator into the lobby, Wen Mian immediately spotted Yuu Ziqian sitting on a gold sofa, arms crossed and tapping her foot impatiently.
Seeing Yuu Ziqian sent a chill through Wen Mian. Her eyes scanned the lobby, noting that aside from the staff, Yuu Ziqian was the only outsider present.
Could it be that Yuu Ziqian is the one looking for her? What's she here for? To cause trouble? To make peace?
Ha, the nerve of this woman, showing her face around here instead of hiding at home. Wen Mian couldn't help but smirk internally. She called over a staff member, pretending not to notice Yuu Ziqian. "Where's the person looking for me?"
"That lady over there," the staff member whispered, pointing in Yuu Ziqian's direction.
Yuu Ziqian heard Wen Mian's voice and looked up as she approached, standing up to greet her. "Wen Mian, I need to talk to you. Let's find somewhere private."
"If you have something to say, say it here. There's no one else around," Wen Mian replied, not even sparing Yuu Ziqian a glance. Once, they had shared everything, but that was in the past. Now, there really wasn't anything left to discuss.
Upon hearing Wen Mian's words, Ziqian's face turned even more unpleasant. "I want to talk to you about Ziqi."
"Ziqi? Which Ziqi?" Wen Mian glanced at Ziqian out of the corner of her eye. "I don't think I know anyone by that name."
So, she came to discuss Ziqi. Unfortunately, Wen Mian had no connection with Ziqi anymore, so she acted as if she had never known him.
"Miss, if you have something to say, just say it. My time is valuable, and I don't have the luxury to stand here idly. If there's nothing else, please leave. This is a place of business, or perhaps..." At this point, Wen Mian gave Ziqian a once-over, curling her lip with disdain. "Are you here to apply for a job? Gu, hand this lady an application form..."
"Wen Mian, we were friends once. Isn't this a bit too much?" Ziqian was angered by Wen Mian's attitude, and her next words made her tremble with rage. "I know I was wrong before, doing things behind your back that I shouldn't have. But we grew up together; doesn't that count for something?"
"What kind of bond? Oh, please, hearing you talk about friendship is laughable. Do you really think you're in a position to talk about bonds with me?" Wen Mian smirked sarcastically, glancing at the whispering staff. "I doubt you'd even manage to work here. You've been the talk of the town lately, and everyone knows who you are. Working here would only invite more gossip."
"You!" Ziqian gritted her teeth, glaring at Wen Mian. But then she remembered she had a reason to be there, so she swallowed her pride and continued, "Gao Ziqi came looking for you yesterday. I heard he even brought your favorite cake."
"Oh, you mean that jerk from yesterday? I had security throw him out. Why? Are you craving his cake too? Sorry, but the jerk ate it himself," Wen Mian shrugged, indifferent, watching with satisfaction as Ziqian's expression grew darker.
Unfortunately, Wen Mian didn't have time to watch Ziqian's face change colors. Such an unpleasant sight might give her a headache, so she directly instructed the server, "Tell this lady her qualifications aren't up to par to work at our Dark Night Royal Palace. Give her ten bucks for cab fare and send her on her way."
"Manager, we never give travel expenses to applicants," the server asked, puzzled.
"True, but we're also members of some charity organizations, right? Whenever a beggar comes by, don't we always give them ten bucks?" Wen Mian gave the server a pointed look, her voice cold. "Do I need to spell it out?"
"Oh! Yes, yes!" The server suddenly understood, nodding repeatedly. "You're right, Manager. My mistake."
"Take your work seriously!" Wen Mian shook her head helplessly and turned to leave.
"Wen Mian, I'm pregnant."
Just as Wen Mian was about to walk away, Ziqian called out loudly to stop her.
Wen Mian paused but didn't turn back.
"Wen Mian, Gao Ziqi has cut off all contact with me. He's blocked my number, and I can't find him anywhere. I'm here to ask you to help me reach him," Ziqian's voice was filled with resentment and regret. "Even if you can't forgive me, I won't complain. But please, for the sake of our childhood friendship, help me this once. No matter how many mistakes I've made, the child is innocent."
Listening to Ziqian, Wen Mian couldn't help but roll her eyes internally at the clichéd plea.
What does "for the sake of our childhood friendship" even mean? And "the child is innocent"?
Does she think I'm some kind of saint? And now she's trying to use her child to gain sympathy from me!
"Oh, really? So you're pregnant with a jerk's child," Wen Mian turned back, smiling faintly. "Honestly, I feel sorry for the child. Born to such lousy parents, what a misfortune."
"As long as you can help me find Gao Ziqi, say whatever you want," Ziqian clenched her fists, bearing the humiliation.
Wen Mian smirked, "Do you think I have nothing better to do than waste my time insulting you? Sorry, I'm so busy I barely remember who you are. And by the way, I don't care whose child you're carrying."
Although she felt a bit guilty about the situation with the child, considering it was still just an embryo and couldn't hear her, she didn't worry too much about it.
"Someone, get these irrelevant people out of here. I don't want this place getting dirty," Wen Mian said, leaving without a backward glance.
Behind her, Yuu Ziqian was still shouting, unwilling to give up. "Wen Mian! How can you be so heartless, not even helping a child? Are you even human? Come back! You cruel woman, don't you have a shred of compassion? Come back!"
Heartless? Lacking compassion?
Yes, when it came to certain shameless scoundrels, she indeed had none of those things. Not everyone had the right to demand her sympathy, especially not those kinds of people.
After seeing Yuu Ziqian, Wen Mian returned to her office.
Sitting at her desk, staring at the data on her computer screen, she let out a long sigh.
A wave of fatigue hit her unexpectedly. She rubbed her tired eyes and leaned back in her chair, hoping to rest for a bit.
But when she really wanted to sleep, she found she couldn't. Bored, she scrolled through her phone and saw the number she had previously ignored. Gently touching the screen, her eyes softened.
What was Gu Zhijian doing now?
After turning off the phone today, did he try calling again? What might he be thinking when he can't get through?
