C7 Marriage Substitute 5
"Cursing me?" Mu Yuyao was caught off guard by Little Apricot's reminder and suddenly it all clicked, her fury erupting, "You dare call me an idiot!? Mu Yunhua, you're nothing but a big sack of air, a complete waste, a worthless cur, a simpleton, a cowardly loser, a fool..."
Impressive, such a variety of adjectives. Any more where that came from?
Mu Yunhua was nonchalantly gnawing on a chicken leg, listening to Mu Yuyao's rant with a series of disapproving clicks of her tongue. Such a limited repertoire of insults; they used to reduce the original owner to tears? Absolutely laughable!
With a "pfft," she spat out the picked-clean chicken bone and glanced at Mu Yuyao, "Are you done? If so, please leave."
Standing in her doorway, you're not just an eyesore but also blocking the light.
"You! You!" Mu Yuyao's eyes widened, staring at Mu Yunhua as if she had seen a ghost. Usually, by the time she reached 'worthless mutt,' Mu Yunhua would already be crying. But today... Could it be that after a visit to the Nether King's Manor, without dying, she had grown a backbone, suddenly unafraid of anything?
No, that couldn't be possible!
"Hmph, so what if you've gotten a bit smarter? You still grab chicken legs intended for dogs and savor them as if they're the finest treat. You're still a fool at heart!" Mu Yuyao declared, smirking triumphantly, "You're oblivious, aren't you? That chicken leg you just enjoyed was taken right from the mouth of the dog that our wet nurse keeps in the kitchen! My maids witnessed it themselves!"
"Mu Yunhua, you even stoop to snatching food from an animal's bowl, how disgusting!"
As Mu Yuyao's words of contempt were spoken, the wet nurse's face instantly turned pale, "No, no, that's not it, Miss. I insisted on giving it to Miss to eat, it wasn't... It wasn't meant for the dog, the dog hadn't even touched it, it wasn't taken from the dog's mouth... I, I..."
The wet nurse realized that any explanation she offered would only make things worse, especially since Mu Yuyao was right about one thing: the chicken leg was indeed brought out for Wang Cai, the dog. But the dog hadn't even had a chance to eat it before she had taken it away. It was completely clean, honestly clean!
The wet nurse was at a loss for words, but Mu Yunhua had finally figured out the reason behind Mu Yuyao's mysterious demeanor upon her entrance.
Upon reflection, it made sense. They hardly ever saw meat throughout the year, so the sudden appearance of a chicken leg was implausible. After all, it had been over a decade; Mrs. Zhang's conscience had long been consumed by a dog. It was impossible for it to suddenly resurface.
It appeared that within the Nether King's Manor, they were considered less significant than dogs. Even dogs enjoyed chicken legs, while they were regarded as even less than canines.
Mu Yunhua gently patted the wet nurse's hand, offering a look that conveyed everything without the need for words. She then turned her attention to Mu Yuyao, raising an eyebrow, "Are you saying that chicken leg was for Wang Cai?"
"Of course. Mrs. Zhang gave it to Wang Cai with her own hands, and my maid Little Apricot saw it happen," Mu Yuyao asserted, lifting her chin proudly as Little Apricot by her side nodded emphatically. "Yes, I saw it with my own eyes."
"Really?" Mu Yunhua said, casually flicking the stripped-clean chicken bone toward Mu Yuyao's feet, "If it belongs to Wang Cai, then call it over. Let's hear it answer."
What?
Mu Yuyao thought she must have misheard Mu Yunhua. Was she being asked to call over a bone and expect a response? What kind of sense did that make?
Could a bone even talk?!
