C10 The Simplest and also the Least Simple
Wu Tian naturally had no complaints. He had nowhere to go anyway, so he said, "Then thank you for taking me in. I don't have any other request for food."
The old man nodded and said, "You can take care of the food, but you must not follow me for free. You must work every day. I have hundreds of acres of land. You must take care of the wheat, soybeans and tea leaves."
"Eh, that much?" Wu Tian was stunned, but he soon understood. There was no such thing as a free lunch in this world. Since this place was so poor, it was impossible for one to eat without working.
The old man slightly raised his brows: "What, you don't want to?"
Wu Tian shook his head and said, "No, I'm willing. Thank you for taking me in."
The old man nodded his head in satisfaction and said, "Alright, then come with me." With that, the old man turned around and left the place. Halfway up the mountain, the old man walked with flying steps. Wu Tian had to jog in order to barely keep up with the old man's footsteps.
After about 20 minutes, a large green field appeared in front of Wu Tian. A small building in the form of a Dai clan stood beside the field.
The old man quickly walked to the side of the building and said in a deep voice, "Come in."
Wu Tian hurriedly followed him. After entering, the old man pointed at the kitchen on the first floor and said, "You can be responsible for the cooking from now on. As for the dishes, go pick them from the ground."
"Oh, got it." Wu Tian nodded. He then took a look at this small Dai building. Although it was very simple to build, it was indeed very clean and nimble.
Then, Wu Tian seemed to recall something and asked, "Uncle, how should I address you?"
The old man glanced at Wu Tian and said indifferently, "My surname is Liu. You can just call me Uncle Liu."
With that, Uncle Liu pointed at the pile of farm tools outside the door and said to Martial Arts: "I'll leave everything in the fields to you. I don't care what you do, but you have to do what you can for me."
Wu Tian nodded his head helplessly, feeling that he was just using himself as a free labourer. However, since he had already let go of the matter, he must be lucky to be alive. Moreover, this old man had saved his life before, so it was only right for him to do something for him.
At this moment, Uncle Liu spoke up. "Go and cook first. After dinner, go to the back mountain and clean up the weeds and dry branches in the fields."
"Yes." Wu Tian nodded his head and walked towards the kitchen. The facilities in the kitchen were also very simple: a pot and a stove.
Wu Tian skillfully lit a fire and cooked the rice. After cooking two bowls of porridge and a few side dishes, he placed the porridge on the wooden table in the living room. Uncle Liu was already waiting there.
Seeing Wu Tian serve the porridge, Uncle Liu didn't hesitate to pick up the bowl and start drinking.
Wu Tian also picked up the bowl and slowly drank. The elder's way of eating was very rude, but Wu Tian soon felt relieved. People living in this kind of place naturally wouldn't be bound by the rules and regulations of the city.
The meal ended just like that. Wu Tian went to clean up the dishes. Just as he did so, the old man picked up two sickles and passed one to Wu Tian. "Come, follow me. I'll teach you how to do it."
At the back of the mountain, there was a large area full of dead branches and weeds. Uncle Liu looked at the back of the mountain and said, "We could grow a lot of food here, but it's all weeds and dead branches. It's a pity that the food in the fields is still not ripe yet, so we don't have any work to do for now. You should clean up the rear mountain first."
"My God." Wu Tian couldn't help but underestimate this. The back of the mountain was so big, yet the dried up branches and weeds on it could only be cleaned up after a long time. Furthermore, he was alone.
Uncle Liu looked at Wu Tian with a fierce look in his eyes, "Why aren't you moving? If you don't get any results today, you're not allowed to eat at night! " With that, Uncle Liu turned around and left, but before he could leave, a yellowing book fell out of Uncle Liu's pocket.
Wu Tian spread out his hands and helplessly followed behind Uncle Liu. Uncle Liu walked up to a dried up branch and raised his sickle to hook onto the middle of the dried up branch. He then pulled forcefully, causing a cracking sound to ring out.
His movements were smooth like flowing water, and he didn't waste any time. Wu Tian was secretly scared, if it was just Uncle Liu's way, then it wouldn't be difficult for him to clean up the dead branches and weeds at the back of the mountain.
Uncle Liu glared at Wu Tian, "See clearly, we're going to do it now."
"Oh, I understand." Wu Tian hurriedly picked up the scythe and walked over to a dried up branch. He held the scythe with both hands and hooked it towards the middle of the dried branch. Just as he hooked onto the dried branch, Wu Tian pulled with force, but to his frustration, the scythe in his hand didn't move at all.
Wu Tian couldn't help but look at Uncle Liu for help. Uncle Liu snorted and walked away, leaving behind a few words as he walked, "If you can't even do such a simple task, what's the use of you? If you can't finish chopping down all one hundred dead branches this afternoon, you're not allowed to eat at night! "
