Xu Ruoyuv and Shangguan Qianmian slept half the night in fear and worry. The next day, they woke up to a series of violent knocks on the door.

Knocking meant waking them up, but it didn't mean letting them open the door or opening it for them.

There was a gap half a foot high under the door, and a tray was pushed in from below.
