C10 Second Uncle's Conversation with Poison Elder
The expression on her face made me feel a deep fear. In this mass grave, what did she see?
I didn't dare to think about it. After running a few steps, I grabbed my mother and used all my strength to pull her along. I staggered towards my home. At that moment, there was only one thought in my heart, and that was to leave this damned place as soon as possible!
When I dragged my mother home, I was already on the verge of collapsing.
However, when I reached home, I was no longer that afraid. After taking a breath and drinking a bowl of water, a strong curiosity appeared in my heart. I asked my mother what she saw just now.
"He is back." Mother said faintly.
"Who?" I was quick to react and blurted out.
Mother did not speak again. She stared at a certain place and seemed to be lost in thought.
I followed her gaze and saw that she was staring at Grandfather's house.
For some reason, I felt a chill down my spine. "He is back." What did these words mean? Did Mother see something in the mass grave? Or did her soul come back after Grandfather's death? Or could it be that "He" referred to Second Uncle?
When I thought of Second Uncle, I realized that the house was dark when I entered. There was no one at home. Could it be that Second Uncle had left?
With this thought, I settled Mother in her house and locked the door from the outside to prevent her from running to the mass grave in the middle of the night. After that, I turned around and walked to Grandfather's house. I knocked on the door and pushed it open. I turned on the lights and saw that the house was neat and tidy, but there was no one in it. Second Uncle was really gone!
After guarding the spirit for three days, I had not slept for three days, and I had almost not eaten anything. Today, I was tortured by my mother, so my body was already exhausted. I wanted to sleep, but I couldn't. I kept thinking about where Second Uncle had gone, and I still had a lot of questions to ask him. Why did he leave?
I walked around the house, feeling unwilling. I had finally come to the truth of the past twenty years. Could it be that I had missed it again?
After wandering around for a long time at home, I could not stay any longer. So I opened the door and walked towards Poison Elder's house. Poison Elder seemed to know a lot of things. Since Second Uncle had left, I could only ask him. I could also ask Grandfather what he had told him before he left, and then take back the wooden box that Grandfather had been thinking about when he opened his eyes. After all, it was something that belonged to our family.
The Poison Elder's house was five minutes away from my house, and I reached it while I was lost in my thoughts. His door was half closed, and it could be seen that the light was on.
Just as I was about to push open the door and enter, the moment my hand touched the door, I heard a voice say, "Uncle, don't say anymore. I was wrong back then. Today, I have my own decision."
The voice that spoke made me excited. It was Second Uncle. Second Uncle hadn't left! He actually said that he was wrong back then at the Poison Elder's house. What did that mean? What did he say back then?
I withdrew my hand and held my breath. I pricked up my ears and eavesdropped. I had a feeling that what Second Uncle and Poison Elder were about to say next would be something that I wanted to know.
"Uncle knows what you are thinking, but this is what your father told me before he left. Your father forcefully held back for half a month and could not swallow his anger. He was afraid that you would mess things up after his death!" Poison Elder's earnest voice sounded again.
So Grandfather was worried about Second Uncle the most, but what did this "mess up" mean? Why did Second Uncle mess things up? Grandfather was afraid that he would mess things up?
I listened. The door was silent for a long time. After a long while, Poison Elder let out a heavy sigh and said, "Your father also told me to tell you that what happened in the past is in the past. Only by letting go of the past can you start a better life."
"Start a better life? How do I start?" Second Uncle seemed to be excited when he heard Poison Elder's words. His voice was louder than before. He then said, "My four nephews died mysteriously! My brother's body has not been found yet! My sister-in-law has been driven crazy! My father has suffered for his entire life! I have no home for twenty years! Before my father died, I was unable to be filial to him! Our family has become so scattered. How can I let it go? How can I start? I am unwilling! Uncle, I am unwilling …"
As his second uncle spoke, he seemed to lose control of his emotions. His voice was filled with hysteria and a hint of sobbing.
I frowned slightly. Hearing Second Uncle's words, it seemed that the reason why he hadn't returned home for twenty years was not because of him, but because he had some sort of reason to do so. Moreover, through these words, it seemed that he could eliminate the possibility that he was the murderer who killed my father and my four brothers. Not only that, he was still brooding over the series of events that had happened to our family.
After that, I heard Second Uncle panting heavily, as if he was trying his best to calm down his emotions. After a while, he said, "Uncle, don't try to persuade me anymore. Father is no longer here, so I don't have so much to worry about. It's time to find out everything that happened back then."
"Sigh."
Another heavy sigh sounded out. Poison Elder said, "When you know your son, you know your father. You made this decision long ago. In fact, your father had already expected this. He told me that if I couldn't stop you, I would let you arrange for Longevity. Don't let him get involved in this matter."
"Longevity." Second Uncle repeated my name faintly. His voice dragged on for a long time, and it carried a hint of profound meaning. After pondering for a long time, he said softly, "I will arrange for him. The Jiang family has already let his parents down …"
Second Uncle's words were spoken lightly, and I didn't hear what he said clearly. However, the words 'the Jiang family has already let his parents down' made me deeply frown. Why did Second Uncle say that? From the meaning of his words, it seemed that my parents weren't from the Jiang family.
No. I immediately denied it in my heart. I must have misunderstood Second Uncle's words. If my father was not my grandfather's biological son in this village, it would have been spread out a long time ago.
"What do you plan to do next? Have you found any clues?" Poison Elder asked his second uncle, interrupting his thoughts.
"I have some clues," Second Uncle said.
"Oh? Who are you suspecting? Is it someone in our village?" Poison Elder asked in surprise.
Second Uncle did not speak. It was unknown whether it was because he did not answer Poison Elder's question, or because his voice was too low that I did not hear it. I only heard Poison Elder ask his second uncle, "Do you think that the four children's deaths were caused by your brother?"
Second Uncle said, "I am not sure about this for the time being. I can only investigate it step by step."
"Huaili, you …" Poison Elder seemed to want to say something, but he stopped himself.
Second Uncle asked him what was wrong?
Poison Elder lowered his voice and said, "Do you think that those things were really done by humans? Why do I feel that their deaths are all strange? It is not human at all!"
