C25 North Coffin Mountain
Just as I was muttering to myself in my heart, who would come up the mountain in this dark place, a shout suddenly came from the light, "Mother, where are you?"
Hearing that voice, I knew in my heart that it must be Midwife Liu's son who came up the mountain to look for her.
"Yuvqing, Mother is here." Midwife Liu, who was silent, hurriedly answered when she heard her son calling for her.
The light came straight towards us.
When he saw me, Yuvqing was very surprised. He looked at Midwife Liu who was leaning on the tree trunk and his expression became unfriendly. He ran to Midwife Liu's side and pulled her up as he asked, "Mother, what's wrong with you?"
Midwife Liu shook her head and said, "I'm fine. It's a coincidence that I met Changsheng."
Yuvqing saw that Midwife Liu was really fine and heaved a sigh of relief. He looked at me suspiciously as if he was curious about why I came up the mountain in the middle of the night. However, he did not ask me. He only said, "Mother, let's go home."
Midwife Liu was supported by Yuvqing as they walked back. She did not forget to turn around and remind me, "Don't go up the mountain at night. The mountain is not clean."
Yuvqing heard his mother's words and said in a low voice, "You know that the sky is dark and the mountain is not clean. Why do you still run up the mountain every now and then? Aren't you afraid of that filthy thing?"
Midwife Liu acted like a child who had done something wrong and was scolded by a large number of people. She said pitifully, "I went up the mountain to pick up some mosquito grass."
Yuvqing said, "Mother, stop trying to fool me. We have the stinky mosquito grass behind our house. Do you have to come up the mountain to pick it? Even if you go up the mountain in the summer to pick the mosquito grass, then tell me, why did you come up the mountain in the winter? Mother, you are already so old, don't go up the mountain in the middle of the night …"
Yuvqing's voice became softer and softer, until he could no longer be heard. I looked at the distant lights and frowned. From Yuvqing's words, it seemed that this wasn't the first time Midwife Liu went up the mountain in the middle of the night. It seemed that she came up the mountain quite frequently.
After talking to Midwife Liu just now, I could tell that her mind was fine. Other than her memory being a little weak, her thoughts were the same as a normal person. But why would a normal old lady run up the mountain in the middle of the night? That mysterious look made me want to find an opportunity to follow her.
After Midwife Liu was taken away by her son, I also wanted to call the thief cat back home with me, but when I turned my head to look, I saw that the thief cat had already continued to walk up the mountain.
"Hey." I shouted at it, "This is a dark and gloomy place, it's not easy to walk on the road, and it's not convenient to find people. Can we come back tomorrow?"
The thief cat turned its head to look at me, then turned around and continued to walk forward.
Once again, I saw contempt in the fat cat's eyes. That bastard seemed to be saying, coward, go back to yourself. I'm leaving first.
After being beaten up by a cat and being despised twice, I was also provoked. I felt that I was not even as good as a cat! Thinking about it, I impulsively followed the thief cat and ran up. I thought to myself, let's go. What's the big deal? Look at Midwife Liu. She is so old and still goes up the mountain alone at night. I am a young man, and I am full of masculinity. Why should I be afraid of her?
Just like that, I followed behind the thief cat and walked towards the depths of the mountain.
We were in a remote place. The closest neighbor village to our village was more than ten miles away. There were mountains all around us. In other words, our small village was surrounded by a large mountain.
There were many people on the mountain, and there were many thorns and trees in the mountains. Therefore, there were very few people who went into the mountains. The road was especially difficult to walk on. The thief cat seemed to be uncertain where to go. It led me along the mountain and turned left and right. Occasionally, it stopped and wandered around for half a day. It seemed to have lost its direction. It would occasionally go back and walk to the other side.
I was unable to communicate with the thief cat. I did not know how it identified the path. Could it be that it was like a dog, and it found this mountain by smelling?
The mountain was deep and the trees were dense. I had never been here before, so I was unfamiliar with the road here. I could only follow the thief cat and climb the mountain. Along the way, other than us occasionally alarming a few birds, which made them flap their wings and fly up, I did not encounter anything unusual.
After walking for about an hour, the thief cat stopped at the top of a mountain and looked down with its green eyes.
It was late at night and the moon was high up in the sky. The mountain was exceptionally bright. Under the moonlight, I followed the thief cat's gaze and looked down the mountain. I saw a bare mountain peak in front of my eyes.
"Mom!"
I frowned as I looked at the mountain at the foot of the mountain. I cursed in my heart. How could I have unknowingly come here?
In this mountain range that stretched for dozens of miles, there were countless nameless mountains. However, this inconspicuous small mountain in front of me had a name for the first time. It was called North Coffin Mountain. The coffin was a coffin. The reason why it was called the coffin was because the mountain was wide at one end and narrow at the other end. It looked like a big coffin. As for why it had the word "Bei", it was because there were four similar mountains in our village. There was one in the east, one in the west, one in the north, and one in the south. The eastern one was called the Eastern Coffin Mountain, and the western one was called the Western Coffin Mountain. Although I had never been to this place, it was located in the north, so it was naturally the North Coffin Mountain.
No one could accurately tell why there were four mountains that looked like coffins around our village. However, there was a legend about this mountain. The old people in the village said that the Mountain Coffin was not a mountain, but a coffin. The inside of the mountain was empty. The ancient people had opened the mountain to make a coffin, and buried a great figure inside. As for why there were four coffins, it was because the ancient people were suspicious and afraid that there would be grave robbers who entered the tomb after death, disturbing his rest. Therefore, they built three similar tombs.
Some people also said that there was a mysterious creature sealed by an ancient master inside the Mountain Coffin. There were rumors that some tomb robbers had thought that there were gold, silver, and jewelry inside the Mountain Coffin. They thought that they were greedy and entered the Mountain Coffin. They found that the inside of the Mountain Coffin was actually empty, and there was a bottomless pool of water.
Those people were obsessed with money, so they tied ropes around their waists and dived into the water.
Underwater, they found a huge bronze cauldron that was suspended in the water with three arms thick. The ancient and mysterious words were carved on the cauldron. Those tomb robbers looked at the heavy and ancient cauldron and thought that there was some treasure inside. Therefore, they tied the ropes on the cauldron. The few of them used all their strength to pull the cauldron out of the water.
However, just as they came out of the water, they heard roars coming from the cauldron. It seemed that there was something inside the cauldron that was still alive!
