C10 Chapter 9:Quiet Moments
Daisy was in the middle of her playful teasing, still grinning at her little brother’s delighted giggles, when she suddenly heard the soft shuffle of footsteps behind her. She turned to see her mother, Lucy, standing in the doorway with her hands on her hips and a mock-serious expression on her face.
Get away from my son, young lady,” Lucy said, pointing dramatically at Daisy. “He’s married!” She walked toward the bed with a mock-threatening pace, trying to hold back her laughter.
Daisy widened her eyes in mock horror, then gasped as if she were deeply concerned. “Oh no, then he has no choice but to get a divorce!” she replied, her voice dripping with over-the-top drama. The room filled with the sound of their shared laughter, the kind of spontaneous joy that only family could bring.
“Hahaha!” Lucy laughed heartily, shaking her head at her daughter’s antics.
“Hahaha!” Daisy echoed, both of them caught up in the humor of the moment. But the most adorable sound of all came from Ken—his tiny giggles filling the room with an infectious energy. He was still nestled in Daisy’s arm,his big black eyes shining with delight at the laughter that surrounded him. His tiny soft laughter made them laugh even more harder
“Tiny giggles from Ken!” Daisy said with a grin, raising her eyebrows dramatically, as if she were acknowledging a tiny comedian. The sound of his laughter was almost contagious, and soon they were all laughing again, the room filled with warmth and affection.
Lucy, still grinning, walked over to the bed and gently sat down on the opposite side. She carefully collected Ken into her arms, his little body light but warm against her chest. With a practiced motion, she reached for the warm bottle of milk, the comforting scent of it filling the air as she placed it in Ken’s tiny hands.
“No more breast milk for this grown ‘one-and-some-month-old’ man,” Lucy teased, her voice tender as she helped Ken latch onto the bottle. “Look at you, all grown up.”
Daisy, meanwhile, shifted on the bed, settling herself into the soft duvet. She slipped her legs underneath the blanket and leaned back against the headboard, feeling the warmth of the room settle around her. The quiet hum of the house felt peaceful in the soft glow of the afternoon light filtering through the curtains.
Daisy sat down beside her mother, her legs slipping under the duvet as she settled in next to them. She glanced over at Lucy.
“I feel like I’m a little girl again, dying to hear a story,” Daisy said with a small laugh, her voice a little dreamy as she looked at her mother. The playful tone lingered in her words, but there was also a tenderness there, something deeper that spoke to the comfort of being with her family.
Lucy chuckled softly, her eyes softening as she gazed down at Ken, who was now fully engrossed in his bottle, his tiny hands holding it with an almost determined grip.
“Which is the truth,” Lucy responded, her voice warm and affectionate as she continued to watch Ken drink. She seemed lost in the moment for a moment, as if savoring the simple beauty of watching her baby grow, even as he was already so independent for such a little one.
Daisy smiled and gently reached out to stroke Ken’s soft curls. He stopped sucking on his bottle for a moment to look up at her, his big eyes wide and curious. She met his gaze, her eyes filled with warmth.
“Good boy, eat first,” she said softly, her voice almost a whisper, as if speaking to him in the quiet, intimate space of the room. “I’ll carry you when you’re done eating.”
Ken gave no response except a small, contented hum as he continued to drink from his bottle, his focus completely on the milk in front of him. Daisy’s hand lingered on his head for a moment longer, rubbing gently, as if to reassure him that she was there, just like always.
Lucy watched the exchange between her children with a smile that softened her whole face. Her attention was still focused on Ken, but her eyes flickered back to Daisy for a moment, a silent understanding passing between them. The warmth in the room was not just physical; it was a bond that ran deep, something that only family could create.
“I’m going to keep this story short and understandable,” Lucy said, her voice light, as she shifted to make herself more comfortable. Her eyes never left Ken, who was now finishing his bottle. “It’s the only way you’ll stay awake long enough to hear it.”
Daisy gave a mock pout, but her eyes twinkled with amusement. “Are you calling me a baby?” she teased.
“Yep”
For a moment, everything was still. Daisy sat there, legs tucked comfortably under the duvet, watching her mother, who was gently burping Ken now that he’d finished his bottle. The room was quiet except for the faint sounds of Ken’s contented sighs and the occasional creak of the bed as Lucy shifted her weight.
Daisy leaned back against the headboard, settling in for whatever story her mom would share next. Her heart was full, not just from the laughter, but from the quiet connection they all shared in this space—no rush, no distractions, just the comforting presence of family, all together in this little moment of peace.
