C16 Dream of the past

“It just so happens that the Deputy Governor of Zhongshan County has retired, and I've been asked to fill the vacancy quickly. Now we can work on cases together, which is truly a blessing,” Lee Yi remarked with deep emotion. Zhang Baigui, who lost his parents at a young age, was raised by his mother alongside Lee Yi. The two grew up together and share a bond as close as brothers.

Zhang Baigui nodded, “Yes! With your intelligence, I’m sure nothing can stump you.”

Lee Yi waved his hand modestly, “Who says that? I’m completely at a loss with this case.”

“Speaking of this case...” Zhang Baigui began, but was interrupted by Zhang Meifen, “You’ve been busy all day, and you’re still talking about cases? You’re both not getting any younger; it’s time to find yourselves wives.”

The comment made both men blush, and they awkwardly shuffled off to their rooms, leaving Zhang Meifen both amused and exasperated.

Meanwhile, that night, Tang Wan'er organized her case files before heading to bed, planning to visit West Firewood Academy the next day.

Little did she know, she would be plunged into a nightmare that night...

On a bustling street, Tang Wan'er was on her way to catch a movie premiere when a man collided with her, dropping a black bag onto her. Before she could process what was happening, an armed detective stopped her.

"Drop the weapon!" another man shouted at her.

Tang Wan'er frowned in annoyance and asked, "Who are you?"

"Detective Jack White, City Police. We suspect you're involved in the jewelry exhibit robbery. Come with me."

Tang Wan'er glanced at the heavy black bag in her hand and quickly tossed it at Jack's feet, explaining, "It's not mine. The person you're looking for ran down that alley."

Not wanting to waste time on a misunderstanding, Tang Wan'er turned to leave.

Unfortunately, Jack didn't believe her and yelled again, "Stay where you are!"

"I told you it's not mine. Why can't you understand?" Tang Wan'er had been looking forward to tonight's movie, and this standoff was just a waste of time.

Jack, unwilling to back down, engaged in a scuffle with her. To his surprise, Tang Wan'er was agile and matched him blow for blow, making it hard to determine a winner.

As the tension between them heightened, several more officers arrived. Seeing Tang Wan'er, they exclaimed with relief, "Profiler Tang, thank goodness you're here. Come with us."

Caught off guard, Tang Wan'er followed them, asking in confusion, "What's going on?"

One officer, pulling her along, explained, "There's a suspect who stabbed a pedestrian ahead. The ambulance hasn't arrived yet, and we need someone with medical knowledge to provide first aid."

Upon hearing the situation, Tang Wan'er immediately responded with determination, "Don't worry, I'll do my best to help."

Zhang Baigui followed the group, deep in thought as he watched Tang Wan'er from behind.

Tang Wan'er arrived at the scene with them, where several pedestrians had been stabbed in the abdomen. She quickly retrieved medication from the first aid kit to disinfect the wounds and used bandages to stop the bleeding.

Zhang Baigui observed Tang Wan'er's efficient technique, and only after the injured were loaded onto the ambulance did he approach her, feeling ashamed, to apologize.

Tang Wan'er rolled her eyes, uninterested in his apology, thinking that if apologies were enough, there'd be no need for the law.

Just as Zhang Baigui was about to say more, a sudden scream erupted from the front. A criminal had taken a pregnant woman hostage, and the detectives had already surrounded the area, securing the scene.
