C6 They Regretted

After experiencing the ups and downs of life, Gu Beixue felt like a star in the sky, her scars shining brightly. Passing by the once-glorious Gu family estate, she couldn't help but miss her precious treasures.

In Jingcheng, Bai Luo was known for making others bow to him, but no one could make this troublemaker lower his head—except once. That one time left him regretting it for five years.

Gu Beixue understood how low and humble she had been back then. If you gamble, you must be willing to lose. She had visited the Huo family, and no matter how anxious she felt inside, she had to keep her composure.

The evening breeze was always so biting.

Gu Beixue prepared to work at Jingsheng Company, knowing it was likely Bai Luo would be there. But she had no choice; she had to pull herself together for her own sake, for the Gu family, and most importantly, for her treasures.

That night, she devised a plan to avoid everyone's attention.

The next day, Gu Beixue spent her last $30 on a pile of cheap makeup, BB cream, and plain clothes. She dressed herself to look like a country girl. But given her past as the eldest daughter of the Gu family, would she really fail the interview?

The Gu family was strict, but her father had always doted on her. Now, Gu Beixue had grown up. She took a minor position at Jingsheng, staying out of the public eye, hoping Bai Luo wouldn't notice her.

"So, what's she been up to lately?" Bai Luo asked, a cigarette between his fingers.

"Director Bai, Miss Gu hasn't been doing much lately. She leaves home at 7:30 AM and returns around 6 PM."

"Seems like?" Bai Luo smirked at the person before him.

His presence was so overwhelming that the person could barely lift their head.

Bai Luo showed no reaction. If she could evade his surveillance, she certainly wouldn't show up.

"Hello? Uncle Huo, could I ask for a favor? Would that be okay?" Gu Beixue asked politely, as a younger person should.

After leaving the Huo family, it was already 8 PM. A smile played on Gu Beixue's lips. Uncle Huo had agreed to help her investigate the events from five years ago. It was clear that someone had divided the Gu family and was manipulating things from behind the scenes.

Gu Beixue was determined to become stronger. She still needed to meet with Qing'er, as the complexities of a mother's love were filled with too much helplessness.

At the Bai family villa, Jee Huiru sat on the couch. "Care to explain why you can't keep tabs on that wretched Gu Beixue?"

"Mrs. Bai, you must understand, there are many ways for someone to avoid being watched. Besides, we're not all-powerful."

"Who taught you to have such a defiant attitude? Don't you know I'm Mrs. Bai? I'm the lady of this villa, so get a grip on reality." These people were skilled in various fields, all 18 of them, which was why Bai Luo hadn't completely cut ties with them. They had all once been loyal to the Gu family.

Judging by Bai Luo's attitude towards Jee Huiru today, she knew he was upset. He never got involved in the squabbles between women, but Jee Huiru believed Bai Luo cared for her. What she didn't know was that Bai Luo had given his heart to someone else five years ago.

"Alright, alright, you can leave now." Jee Huiru thought Gu Beixue was a temptress who would eventually lure Bai Luo away. People could be so deceitful.

Jee Huiru wanted to get rid of Gu Beixue. She had someone tailing Gu Beixue 24/7. Gu Beixue had already guessed that Jee Huiru's jealousy would once again drive her to reach out with her wicked hands, but Gu Beixue no longer cared. She had once been the laughingstock of the entire city. Her only concern was her precious child, whom Qing'er had never spoken to or met.

Jee Huiru didn't live with Bai Qing'er. Bai Luo still had a soft spot for this child, after all, she was his. Bai Luo doted on her greatly.

The evening breeze in the city was cool, and the night felt desolate. Gu Beixue wandered along the road, aware that she wasn't in a position to meet Bai Qing'er. Bai Luo knew it too; with Gu Beixue's skills, meeting Bai Qing'er would be easy. The real reason was that right after her release, Bai Luo had crushed her spirit, making her realize she couldn't face Qing'er. She was struggling to get by and couldn't bear for Bai Qing'er to know she'd been in prison.

For the rest of her life, Gu Beixue was determined to be ambitious and reclaim everything that was hers. Suddenly, a car sped past her on the road, narrowly missing her. Someone inside held up a large cardboard sign that read, "A wise person adapts to circumstances."

Gu Beixue laughed, a bitter laugh. She was grateful for losing everything and disappointing everyone because it revealed the true nature of two people. Without that encounter, she might not have changed so much. People have to grow. But she was thankful that, despite her struggles, those two hadn't changed. Did they really think that would make Gu Beixue back down? She wasn't the same person anymore.

"How did it go?" Jee Huiru asked excitedly.

"It's done as you instructed," the person in black replied calmly.

Jee Huiru was thrilled. She thought Gu Beixue's strength was just a facade, that she was still the naive girl she used to be. She had overlooked something.

"How's Qing'er doing lately?" Bai Luo suddenly asked.

The secretary beside him was startled. "Mr. Bai, Miss Qing'er is doing well."

The secretary was quite nervous.

"Beep beep, beep beep." Bai Luo's phone rang.

He glanced at the screen displaying the name "Jee Huiru."

"Hello? What's up? I'm busy," Bai Luo said flatly.

"Nothing much, just wanted you to come home for dinner," Jee Huiru said, trying to contain her excitement.

"Alright, I'll be back soon. Don't go to Mom and Dad's to see Qing'er. I'll take you there over the weekend," Bai Luo replied.

"Okay, I won't go. I'll go with you," Jee Huiru agreed.

Is it only when someone truly knows what they want that they feel the chill of the wind?

Gu Beixue lingered on the road for two hours. She retraced the paths she used to rush through, curious about what scenery she might have missed along the way, wanting to see just how much pride she held. The wind dried her tears.

Step by step, she walked the path to the Gu family estate and then across the bridge. This was the story of her early life.

Now, the rest of her life was hers to shape, with fortune favoring those who go with the flow, and adversity for those who resist.
