C9 There Was Someone Behind Him
Gu Beixue felt like today was one of those days she should have stayed in bed. Despite a few unpleasant moments, the thought of seeing her daughter, Xiaoxiao, quickly lifted her spirits.
Carrying the gift she had picked out for her daughter, Beixue couldn't help but feel a rush of excitement. She hoped Xiaoxiao would love it. She had chosen a Barbie doll after consulting a colleague, whose little girl adored them. After all, Beixue hadn't been around for five years and wasn't sure what Xiaoxiao liked these days.
Not in the mood to return to the office, Beixue wandered down the street, lost in thought, when her phone suddenly rang, breaking the silence.
"Incoming call, incoming call," the ringtone chimed.
Beixue quickly grabbed her phone and saw it was a call from Huo Changzhi. She answered, hearing a warm voice on the other end.
"Nianyu, do you know who this is?"
Changzhi had gotten her number from his father, assuming she wouldn't recognize his.
Thinking it might be a prank, Beixue played along, feigning confusion. "Who might this be?"
"I'll give you one more chance. Guess who?"
Beixue couldn't help but smile to herself. "Alright, Changzhi, stop playing games. What's up?"
"Nianyu, how did you know it was me? You don't even have my number."
"Mr. Huo gave it to me last time. Besides, who else would call me Nianyu?"
Realizing she was right, Changzhi chuckled. "Nianyu, you should come over. We have some updates on that matter from five years ago."
After hanging up, Beixue felt a mix of excitement and anxiety. She wasn't sure how to handle things if Bai Luo, Xiaoxiao's father, was involved.
Soon, Beixue found herself at View Manor, gazing at the grand house that once was theirs. Memories from five years ago flooded back, ones she knew she'd never forget.
Arriving at the Huo residence, Beixue found Mr. Huo and his son, Changzhi, waiting for her on the living room sofa. The Huo family had been helping her as much as they could, given her connection to their past.
"Mr. Huo, I heard you haven't been feeling well lately. Please take care of yourself. I brought you some health supplements," Beixue said, showing her concern for the family that had supported her so much.
Mr. Huo coughed lightly and replied, "When you get to my age, your health isn't what it used to be. Back when I was your age, I didn't even know what medicine tasted like!"
Beixue laughed, imagining Mr. Huo as a charming young man in his day. Mr. Huo glanced at his son, Changzhi, who handed Beixue a folder.
Feeling a bit anxious, Beixue looked at the father and son, and Mr. Huo nodded at her. After reading the documents, she was stunned, lost in thought.
Just as she suspected, someone was orchestrating everything behind the scenes. Her father's old associates had all but vanished from the city, making them nearly impossible to find.
"Mr. Huo, how did you find this person?" Beixue asked.
"Nianyu, are you really planning to confront him?" Mr. Huo inquired, noticing the determination in her eyes.
"Mr. Huo, if there's a chance to uncover the truth from back then, I have to pursue it," Beixue replied firmly.
"This person is connected to a friend of mine who owes him his life. It took a lot of digging to track him down," Mr. Huo explained.
Beixue smiled slightly, her expression calm, without saying a word.
Mr. Huo continued, "He probably doesn't know much either. It took us so long to find him, which means there are likely more obstacles ahead, and those behind this will try to stop us."
"I'm aware," Beixue acknowledged. "If there weren't people behind this, our investigation wouldn't be so difficult. The signs are all there."
Huo Bingxin knew that with Gu Beixue's stubborn and headstrong nature, nothing he said would change her mind. He looked at her and calmly suggested, "Why don't you take Changzhi with you? Having a man around might help resolve some issues more smoothly."
Gu Beixue smiled gratefully and replied, "Mr. Huo, there's really no need. I can handle it on my own. Besides, your health isn't great, so it's better for Changzhi to stay with you."
She was already very thankful to the Huo family. Even though they hadn't helped her get back at Bai Luo, they'd done more than enough for her. Hearing her polite refusal, Huo Bingxin didn't insist. He assured her that if she needed anything else, she could always come to him, and he'd do his best to help.
With her documents in hand, Gu Beixue bid farewell to the Huo family. As she passed by her old home, she didn't stop for a moment. Knowing her next steps, she headed straight to the hospital.
The chairman was much better now, his complexion no longer as pale and weak as when he was first admitted. Concerned, Gu Beixue asked, "Chairman, are you feeling better now?"
The chairman patted her hand reassuringly. "Don't worry. After taking some medicine and getting some sleep, I'm much better."
Noticing her distracted demeanor, the chairman, with his keen insight, couldn't help but ask, "Beixue, you've been with me for a while, and I know a bit about your background. You seem troubled. Is something bothering you? You can tell me."
Gu Beixue smiled slightly and squeezed the chairman's hand. "Chairman, it's nothing serious. I just need to take a few days off to handle some personal matters."
The chairman pressed further, "Is it about your family again?"
Gu Beixue didn't speak, only nodded in response. Seeing her reluctance to talk, the chairman didn't push further. He had an assistant to care for him, so he didn't need Gu Beixue by his side.
Afterward, Beixue returned to Lin's Group. With the chairman still in the hospital, she needed to hand over her current work responsibilities. She glanced at the gift intended for her daughter, Qing'er, realizing it would be a while before she could see her. Reluctantly, she set the gift aside.
Meanwhile, at the Bai family villa, Jee Huiru was constantly keeping tabs on Beixue and Muqing, plotting a larger scheme in her mind. Holding a glass of red wine, she swirled it slowly, her gaze sharp as she listened to her subordinates report on their activities.
"Mrs. Bai, both of them were at the hospital today. They didn't meet, but they definitely had their own business there."
Jee Huiru remained silent, downing her wine in one swift motion. She muttered under her breath, "Beixue, Muqing, just you wait. I'll make sure you get what's coming to you."
