C3 A Visit
"Is there anything else?" Wanwan asked, her back to Beijin, her expression blank.
"I'll compensate you. Name your price."
Beijin thought he was being considerate, but to Wanwan, his words felt like an insult.
She turned around, shocked, her eyes wide with disbelief. "Do you think I'm some kind of escort? First, you force me to take medicine, and now you try to humiliate me with money?!"
"You misunderstood," Beijin replied, releasing a sigh and furrowing his brow slightly. "I just know your family's struggling, and your dad is... incapacitated."
"Enough!" Wanwan snapped, her lips pressed tightly together. "What happens in my family is none of your business. Do you feel accomplished investigating me?"
Beijin was silent.
"If you really want to make it up to me, just stay out of my life." With that, Wanwan pushed the car door open and jumped out.
She left without a hint of hesitation or regret.
Beijin watched her walk away, standing there in silence for a long time before finally leaving.
What he didn't know was that his investigation into Wanwan quickly reached the Yeh family. Beijin's mother was the first to hear that her son had been looking into a woman.
"What kind of person is she?" Mother Yeh asked absentmindedly, flipping through a fashion magazine.
"Her name is Wanwan," the man replied nervously, hesitating before adding, "She's... she's the daughter of the man you had us run into."
This is why he came to report the matter.
Did the young master investigate the man's daughter because he found out about this, or did the man's daughter learn something and approach the young master?
Mother Yeh put down her magazine, her deep eyes sharp and piercing. "What did you say?"
The person had no choice but to repeat themselves.
A cold glint flashed in Mother Yeh's eyes as she stood up from the sofa. "Have someone follow the young master."
"Yes."
"I want to see what’s really going on here."
"What about the girl?" the person asked cautiously.
Mother Yeh remained silent, contemplating as she fiddled with her fingers, then waved her hand dismissively.
No instructions meant no action was needed for now.
Yang Wanwan initially planned to look for a job, but after meeting Yeh Beijin, her mood and state plummeted. After Mother Yang left for the hospital, she secretly slipped back home and buried herself in bed.
Meanwhile, Yeh Beijin, unaware he was being followed, went straight from Yang Wanwan's neighborhood to his office. Everything about his day seemed unchanged, except for the occasional distraction.
That night.
Mother Yang returned home from the hospital and, to her surprise, found Yang Wanwan already home, having prepared a full dinner.
"Wanwan, you’re home early today?" Mother Yang remarked as she set her things down, only to be gently pushed onto the sofa by Yang Wanwan.
"Our boss gave me a few days off to really relax," Yang Wanwan said as she sat down. "Mom, try my cooking and see how it is."
Mother Yang, unsuspecting of anything, was pleased to hear about Yang Wanwan's break. The two of them chatted and laughed over dinner.
"Ding dong."
The doorbell rang at an inconvenient moment, making Yang Wanwan's eyelid twitch as her chopsticks fell to the floor.
"I'll get it," Mother Yang said, patting Yang Wanwan's shoulder and heading to the door.
Yang Wanwan felt uneasy, as if something bad was about to happen.
"Who are you...?" The handsome man at the door left Mother Yang momentarily speechless.
Yeh Beijin nodded slightly, "Hello, ma'am. I'm a friend of Yang Wanwan."
His gaze subtly examined Mother Yang, though it was hard to notice unless you looked closely.
So this is what he looks like in person...
"Oh, a friend of Wanwan's? Come in, come in!" Mother Yang warmly ushered Yeh Beijin inside, her eyes crinkling with a smile. "Wanwan just finished cooking. You're just in time; have a seat and join us."
Seeing Yeh Beijin walk in with her mom, Yang Wanwan's mouth opened slightly in surprise, and her chopsticks clattered to the floor again.
Mother Yang paused for a moment, while Yeh Beijin simply looked on calmly.
"Why are you here?" Yang Wanwan suddenly stood up from the couch, her voice filled with anger. "Who invited you?!"
"Is that any way to talk?" Mother Yang gently scolded, giving Yang Wanwan a light pat and urging her to sit back down. "You should be happy when friends visit. What's with the attitude?"
"It's alright, Mrs. Yang. It's understandable that Wanwan doesn't like me. After all, I did take something precious from her," Yeh Beijin said, making himself comfortable next to Yang Wanwan without waiting for an invitation.
At the mention of "something precious," Yang Wanwan's eye twitched. She opened her mouth to lash out but held her tongue.
If she really yelled at him, the secret would be out.
Yang Wanwan sat back down, her hands clenched tightly. She wanted to grab Yeh Beijin by the collar and demand to know what he was up to, but with Mother Yang present, she had to restrain herself.
"You two chat for a bit. I'll go slice some fruit," Mother Yang said, sensing the tension and wisely stepping out of the room.
As soon as Mother Yang left, Yang Wanwan turned and grabbed Yeh Beijin by the collar, forcing him to lean slightly forward. "What are you trying to do? Didn't I make myself clear this morning? I never want to see you again!"
"Did you come here just to provoke her?"
Beijin didn't resist; instead, he leaned closer to Wanwan, almost touching her.
"I'm here to make it up to you." He pulled out a card and handed it to Wanwan. "The password is your birthday."
Wanwan didn't take it. "I told you, I don't need it."
"Your dad does." Beijin didn't argue further and casually placed the card on the table. He asked, seemingly offhandedly, "Your mom seems like a gentle person."
Mentioning her mother, Wanwan relaxed a bit. "That's none of your business."
She let go of Beijin and moved to sit across from him, putting some distance between them. "If you just came to drop off the card, you can leave now."
Just as she finished speaking, her mother emerged from the kitchen.
