C9 The Mother and Son Relationship Was Severed
The phone in Beijin's pocket vibrated, and he answered the call.
"Beijin, if you dare meet that woman today, we're done as mother and son."
Hearing his mother's words, Beijin felt relieved, knowing that the woman wasn't in immediate danger. The weight on his heart finally eased. He was amazed at how much his emotions were tied to this woman.
"Mom, you can't push things too hard. It's like a bowstring—pull it too tight, and it'll snap."
His words left his mother momentarily stunned. She couldn't believe he would threaten her for that woman, standing against his own family. Her eyes were filled with anger and a deep sense of pain. What kind of spell has that woman's daughter cast on my son to make him protect her so fiercely?
In a quiet alley, at the Yang family home.
"Thanks so much for going out of your way again," Wanwan said gratefully to Luo Yi.
"It's no problem. It's what I should do."
The phone rang loudly in the stillness of the night, the sound piercing through the silence.
Seeing the unfamiliar number, Wanwan was about to hang up.
"Why aren't you answering?" Luo Yi's sudden voice startled her, and she accidentally hit the answer button.
"Where are you? Are you okay?" The deep, melodious voice on the other end was like a violin, captivating Wanwan's ears.
Wanwan listened to the vaguely familiar voice on the phone, momentarily puzzled. "Who are you?"
On the other end, the man felt a throb in his temples, annoyed that she had forgotten him after just one day. Clearly, she had a short memory.
Luo Yi, standing nearby, assumed it was a scam call and gestured for Wanwan to hand the phone over to him.
"Hello?" Luo Yi asked.
Hearing the unfamiliar male voice, Beijin frowned deeply. "And who might you be?" Beijin asked, displeased.
"Who I am isn't important. What's important is that it's not appropriate for a stranger to be bothering a young lady."
"Bothering?" Beijin raised an eyebrow and quickly countered, "Isn't it also inappropriate for you to be with a young girl late at night?"
"I'm just making sure she gets home safely."
"Thanks."
Having gotten the information he needed, Beijin hung up and drove toward Wanwan's home.
Luo Yi never suspected that Beijin's words were just a ploy to find out where Wanwan was. As they say, the most cunning paths are often the ones laid by the big boss.
"The guy hung up. For your safety, it's best if you stay home tonight," Luo Yi advised Wanwan kindly.
"Okay."
In no time, a sleek black Hummer skidded to a stop in the narrow alley. Yang Wanwan stared blankly at the man who appeared, a hint of surprise flickering in her eyes. What was he doing here?
Luo Yi squinted as he sized up the man stepping out of the Hummer. Tall and slender, he wore an expensive iron-gray suit, with a meticulously buttoned dark shirt, except for a few undone buttons at the neck, revealing a long, alluring neckline. His deep, captivating amber eyes held a touch of arrogance, and his brows carried a hint of mischief and charm. Though he seemed nonchalant, there was an inexplicable intensity in his gaze. His demeanor was impeccably refined and elegant, exuding a natural aristocratic aura.
“Did you save this girl?” the man asked Luo Yi, raising an eyebrow.
“Who are you?” Luo Yi shot back.
“Who am I?” the man asked the woman standing before him, his tone indifferent.
In the dim yellow light, she seemed draped in a pale yellow veil, her long, wavy hair cascading messily over her shoulders. Her delicate face was free of makeup, and her expressive eyes seemed to speak volumes.
Her beauty was captivating, as if she had stepped out of a painting. Listening to the familiar voice on the phone, Wanwan's eyes widened in disbelief.
"It's you."
"Just a day apart and you’ve already forgotten me? Your memory is something else."
As the man teased her without hesitation, a blush spread from Wanwan's neck to her ears. Beijin subtly curved his lips, watching her shy reaction. It was a feeling he found quite enjoyable.
"Beijin," he introduced himself.
"Beijin, from the Yeh family in the capital?" Luo Yi asked, somewhat uncertain.
"Uh-huh," Beijin replied nonchalantly.
"Thanks for today, Colonel Luo," Beijin said quietly as he approached Luo Yi, speaking in a voice only the two of them could hear.
Luo Yi found it hard to believe. His identity was a closely guarded secret, known only to a few trusted people. How did Beijin know?
"How do you know who I am?" Luo Yi asked, puzzled.
"There are no secrets that can't be uncovered, Colonel Luo," Beijin replied leisurely, his amber eyes filled with a casual indifference, as if nothing truly mattered to him.
Wanwan watched the unfamiliar interaction between the two, feeling incredibly curious.
