C13 Chapter 13

Jiang Ruan swiftly turned and severed the neck of the woman with the swollen belly. Her distended form slowly collapsed to the ground, and simultaneously, her abdomen began to shrivel up rapidly.

A newborn baby hit the ground. It didn't cry but simply opened its murky gray eyes and unsheathed its sharp fangs, charging mindlessly at Jiang Ruan.

The fact that the newborn could walk stunned Zeng Qiang and the rest to the point where their jaws nearly dropped. Now, they were even more hesitant to join Jiang Ruan in combat.

The infant moved quickly, nearly reaching Jiang Ruan when she deftly swung her blade, severing its arm. Black blood, reeking with a putrid stench, poured out. Another swift cut from her knife cleaved off half of the baby's head, exposing the writhing maggots within.

Zeng Qiang, perched atop the platform, began to retch, and the two women followed suit. Their empty stomachs could only expel bile.

Ignoring the others, Jiang Ruan swiftly dispatched the remaining eight zombies. She then cast a glance at the people on the platform, a cold sneer in her heart. This was the nature of human relationships—self-preservation in the face of danger, especially in this post-apocalyptic world.

She strode over to the gas station, filled the car with fuel, and swept the area with her psychic energy. The station was deserted, but there was a convenience store inside where she could gather a substantial amount of supplies.

The onlookers on the platform, having seen no sign of the monstrous creature, cautiously descended. They frantically stormed the convenience store, trailing behind Jiang Ruan.

A hint of contempt flickered across Jiang Ruan's stoic face as she smirked coldly. "Go fill up on oil, as much as you can. We're definitely going to need it."

Relieved that Jiang Ruan seemed unconcerned, everyone breathed easier.

Zeng Qiang agreed with Jiang Ruan's plan and headed to the warehouse. He grabbed several small oil drums, filled them to the brim, and stowed them in the trunk.

The radio crackled with a fragmented signal, drawing everyone's vigilant gaze.

"A month has passed since the apocalypse... Survivor bases are located in the south, east... Hope Base welcomes all superpowered individuals and survivors... Squeak, squeak, squeak..." The radio continued to emit the magnetic male voice.

Zhu Zhengyan's realization dawned quickly, and he exclaimed with joy, "Did you all hear that? The ZF has established a base for us. As long as we make it to the base, we'll be safe and sound!"

Joyful smiles spread across everyone's faces, their excitement palpable as they struggled to figure out their next steps. "The only problem is figuring out how to get to the base, especially since we don't even know where it is right now."

"That's not an issue," Lu Ming chimed in, optimism lacing his words. "We're bound to run into many people on our way. Once we reach A City, we'll surely find other survivors, right?" His heart swelled with hope.

"We should set out immediately!" Du Jianghong was practically itching to take off for A City, her thoughts racing to her boyfriend who might be waiting there.

With various motives driving them, the group hastily loaded up the car with supplies and prepared to hit the road. But no sooner had they set out than they stumbled upon other survivors rushing in their direction.

Jiang Ruan and the group were met with wary eyes. The newcomers scrutinized them thoroughly before their leader, brandishing a large machete, approached. "Are you survivors too? Is this car yours?"

These were villagers from nearby, the only five to survive as the rest had succumbed to a monstrous fate. Escaping had been a harrowing feat, and now, encountering fellow humans who hadn't lost their humanity brought them both joy and fear. On their journey, they had faced humans far more dreadful than any zombie.
