C33 Young Master Lo Was Critically Ill
Lu Jinhan entered the room and called Nan Jun.
"Did you take the job?" His voice was low and resonant, reminiscent of a cello's timbre.
"Mr. Han, I haven't," Nan Jun replied, a touch of desolation in his voice. "The Shadow's movements are too unpredictable; I'm not taking any jobs right now."
"Increase the payment!" Lu Jinhan commanded with a voice that resonated with authority.
"Even at twenty times the standard rate, they're not biting. Double it again!" Lu Jinhan's gaze grew more intense.
"Understood, Mr. Han."
Nan Jun was aware of the Shadow's exceptional medical expertise, yet even after offering ten times what others did, there were still no takers.
The following morning, Lu Jinhan descended the staircase.
"Jinhan, something's wrong. Mrs. Lee is having trouble breathing, and it seems worse than before," Lin Manyin reported, rushing towards him.
"I should've known Su Rann was incapable. If anything happens to Mrs. Lee, it's surely that woman's fault," she repeated insistently to Lu Jinhan.
"Show me to her," he said, his facial features taut, his eyes dark and brooding, emotions churning beneath the surface.
Upon entering Mrs. Lee's room, Lu Jinhan found her lying in bed, appearing frail.
"Mrs. Lee just took Su Rann's concocted medicine last night, and now she's deteriorated. We need to get her to the hospital immediately," Lin Manyin said, her voice tinged with rage at the mention of Su Rann.
For some reason, Lu Jinhan had trusted Su Rann the previous night.
"I'm going to confront Su Rann. I need to know why she would harm Mrs. Lee," Lin Manyin declared, storming off to Su Rann's room.
Her movements were fierce and aggressive as she pounded on the door.
After a prolonged period of knocking with no answer, Lin Manyin's fury escalated. She wanted nothing more than to see Su Rann pay dearly.
But then she considered, if Su Rann had indeed caused harm to Mrs. Lee, Lu Jinhan would undoubtedly deal with her harshly. Lin Manyin could simply sit back and watch the drama unfold.
Returning to Mrs. Lee's room, Lin Manyin was surprised to find that Mrs. Lee's breathing had improved significantly. She was even able to converse normally with Lu Jinhan.
"Young Master, I feel so much lighter now. I never expected the lady's medicine to actually work," Mrs. Lee said with a relieved smile.
She had endured the agony of her illness for many years, but now she felt significantly better.
"That's good to hear," Lu Jinhan replied, his face softening.
"Mrs. Lee, how are you feeling?" Lin Manyin asked, her fists clenched. "I'm not convinced it's Su Rann's medicine that's working. Maybe you're just getting better on your own?"
She still couldn't believe that Su Rann possessed such skills.
To her, Su Rann was nothing more than a waste of space.
Mrs. Lee simply smiled, well aware of Lin Manyin's disdain for Su Rann.
When Lu Jinhan spotted Su Rann passing by the doorway, he stepped out to follow her.
Lin Manyin's grip tightened as she saw Lu Jinhan leave because of Su Rann.
Approaching Su Rann, Lu Jinhan took her hand, and in that instant, she found herself powerless to resist, just as before.
Her mind went blank.
Lu Jinhan led her to the balcony. "Do you practice medicine?" he asked, his tone skeptical yet his gaze betraying a deep belief.
"I have some knowledge," she replied coolly, pulling her hand away from his. As he drew nearer, she could smell the crisp scent of ancient forest wood.
Su Rann intentionally kept her distance from him.
This man was proving to be quite a challenge.
"Are you certain you can cure Mrs. Lee's asthma?" Lu Jinhan asked, his eyes narrowing with doubt.
"With my treatment plan, three courses should suffice for a full recovery," Su Rann stated, then turned to walk away.
Lu Jinhan watched her deliberate distancing with a furrowed brow.
"Wait!" he called out, his voice steady as a flat line.
Feeling Lu Jinhan's presence closing in behind her, Su Rann hastened her steps.
Whenever she was close to this man, her thoughts seemed to short-circuit.
This was a new predicament for her, and without a solution in sight, she knew she had to keep her distance from him.
Watching her quick departure, a smile crept onto Lu Jinhan's lips, a smile he himself didn't quite understand.
This woman was quite fascinating.
In his office, Lu Jinhan took a call, his face darkening with each word.
"Critical condition?" His piercing gaze grew even sharper.
"Mr. Han, if Young Master Lo's condition deteriorates further, our deal will be void," Nan Jun relayed over the phone.
Lo Boyuan, another of Lu Jinhan's close friends, managed all the Lo family's businesses.
For the past two years, his health had mysteriously declined. Despite consulting renowned doctors both in the capital and abroad, no remedy was found.
Consequently, Lo Boyuan had no choice but to end the partnership with Lu Jinhan.
For Jinhan, this meant not only the loss of a business deal but, more significantly, the loss of a friend.
"Has Shadow not accepted the job yet?" Jinhan inquired once more. Over the past two years, despite consulting numerous medical experts, the illness had persisted, recently taking a turn for the worse.
"Not yet, Mr. Han," Nan Jun responded, a note of despair in his voice.
Even after increasing the fee to twenty times the industry standard, Shadow still hadn't taken the job.
Jinhan ended the call and approached Su Rann, ushering her out abruptly.
"What's going on?" she asked, taken aback by his sudden presence.
In his company, she felt herself become as helpless as a delicate young girl.
"Come with me to meet someone," Jinhan said, his tone grave as he guided Su Rann into the passenger seat.
With a press of the accelerator, the car shot forward like a swift arrow.
They rode in silence.
Arriving at a traditional Chinese villa, they were greeted by a landscaped courtyard complete with a rockery and an abundance of flowers.
A bamboo-lined path led to a tranquil area beyond the rockery.
The villa's owner must be a refined gentleman, possessing the elegance of the ancients.
Away from the city's hustle, the occasional chatter of magpies in the branches lent the place a unique charm.
"There's a patient living here, quite ill. I need you to examine him. He..." Jinhan began, then hesitated, his lips pressed tightly together as his stern features grew tense.
Lu Jinhan had little hope for Su Rann, yet he found himself without alternative options.
Had Mrs. Lee's health not shown signs of improvement, he would never have considered bringing her here.
As Su Rann walked in with Lu Jinhan, they were greeted by the subtle scent of orchids permeating the room.
