C10 The Lagos Ambush

The streets of Lagos roared with life, a pulsating web of honking cars, street hawkers, and the relentless rhythm of a city that never sleeps. Adekolade and Omolola walked side by side, their senses alert. Even in a modern city, the Ashbound Order had ways of tracking them.

Omolola adjusted the strap of her bag, which held scrolls, maps, and artifacts from their training. “We have to find the hidden nexus in Abeokuta,” she said quietly. “It’s a site from our past life… where the Order first tried to extinguish us.”

Adekolade’s eyes swept the busy street. “And you’re telling me we just walk in the middle of Lagos while assassins could be watching?”

Omolola smirked. “No. We blend. But if they attack… we fight.”

The Ambush

As they approached a busy bridge near Marina, the hum of the city masked subtle shifts in the air. Adekolade’s fire pulsed faintly, warning him.

From the shadows of an abandoned parking structure, a group of figures dropped silently. Hooded, armed, moving like predators.

“The Order,” Adekolade muttered.

Omolola’s amber light flared. “Stay close!”

The first assassin lunged from behind a streetlight. Adekolade’s reflexes were faster than ever. Flames burst from his hands, sending the attacker crashing into a nearby taxi.

Omolola spun gracefully, memory-light forming multiple afterimages around her, confusing another attacker as she struck precise bursts of energy.

Pedestrians screamed and scattered, but the Ember Pair moved with fluid coordination, golden and amber light tracing arcs through the Lagos dawn.

Chase Through Lagos

The fight spilled across the streets. Adekolade vaulted over cars, fire igniting in his wake, while Omolola used her memory-light to shield them from stray attacks.

They darted through markets, weaving past stalls filled with fruits, fabrics, and crafts. Smoke from burning barricades mingled with the aroma of street food, creating a chaotic haze.

“Head toward the Third Mainland!” Adekolade shouted. “We can cross the river and shake them off!”

Omolola nodded, leading him through narrow alleys and over rooftops, the hum of energy beneath their feet guiding them like a beacon.

Flight to Abeokuta

After losing most of their pursuers, Omolola produced an old map from her bag, pointing to a hidden path through Ogun State that led to Abeokuta.

“This is where our past life’s cultivation site is located,” she explained. “The rock formations, the sacred caves… everything that built our Ember cores started here.”

Adekolade grinned, sweat mixing with soot. “So we run from Lagos chaos to forest mysticism. Sounds… like home.”

The drive to Abeokuta was tense but purposeful. Each town they passed seemed to resonate with faint echoes of their past lives. Adekolade felt flashes of memories—training on rocky hills, sparring with Omolola at sunrise, and moments of laughter and intimacy that had been sealed away.

Arrival at Abeokuta

By dusk, they arrived at a secluded area near Olumo Rock. The towering formations rose against the purple-orange sky, ancient and imposing.

“This is it,” Omolola whispered. “The site of our first great battle. The first place we learned the true bond of the Ember Pair.”

Adekolade’s fire pulsed stronger here, reacting to residual energy. The memory-light around Omolola shimmered in resonance, forming intricate patterns across the rock surfaces.

Suddenly, a chilling laugh echoed from the shadows.

“You didn’t think we’d let you escape so easily,” a masked voice called out.

The Ashbound Order had tracked them again, following them all the way to Abeokuta.

Adekolade and Omolola exchanged a glance. Flames and light surged around them.

“Let’s finish this,” Adekolade said, gripping his sword tightly.

Omolola nodded, amber light wrapping around her like living armor.

From the base of Olumo Rock to its highest cliffs, the stage was set. The Ember Pair, reborn and fully awakening, were ready to face the Order once and for all—and claim Abeokuta as a place of power and memory for themselves.
