C18 The Serpent’s Whisper

The cavern dimmed to a nightmare.

The giant shadow slithered across the walls, its voice echoing inside every mind present.

Not words.

Intent.

Hunger.

Recognition.

Adaeze fell forward, palms hitting the stone.

She felt its attention like a hand pressing against her soul.

Zarah screamed. Kachi shielded her with a burst of fire, but the flames bent away from the shadow as if afraid.

Chisom clutched his temples. “It’s inside… it’s inside my head—”

Karynda grabbed Adaeze by the shoulders. “Fight it!”

She couldn’t.

The voice was too familiar.

Too ancient.

Too intertwined with her past life.

It whispered:

“My Oracle. My Vessel. My Door. Open.”

Adaeze’s body convulsed.

Omalicha raised her hands. The violet carvings pulsed faster. “YES! Yes, she remembers you! The Tear inside her is ready! OPEN THE DOOR!”

Karynda roared, “STOP!”

He dashed forward, blue glyphs sparking around his fists.

Omalicha turned.

Their powers collided.

The impact cracked the cavern floor like thin ice.

Zarah dragged Kachi away from falling debris.

Chisom fired small explosives upward to delay collapsing stones.

But the Serpent’s shadow grew larger.

Hungrier.

Adaeze forced herself to stand.

Her vision flickered between gold and violet. Between her true self and something darker. Something stripped of mercy.

“Get… out… of my mind,” she whispered.

The Serpent laughed.

Karynda reached her first. “Look at me. Not at it. Look at me.”

She did.

And something old pushed back.

Her golden light ignited.

The Serpent recoiled.

Omalicha screamed. “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!”

Adaeze’s voice shook the cavern.

“I. AM. NOT. YOUR. VESSEL.”

The golden light exploded outward.

The entire cavern shook.

The Serpent screamed in rage.

The murals cracked.

The violet lights sputtered.

And Omalicha stumbled backward, shielding her eyes.

Adaeze collapsed into Karynda’s arms.

The Serpent withdrew into the shadows with a hiss that promised war.

Omalicha fled into a tunnel.

The cavern fell silent except for heavy breathing and settling dust.

Karyňda held Adaeze close. “You fought it.”

Adaeze trembled. “But it almost won.”

Zarah crouched beside them. “Almost doesn’t count. Not when you’re still breathing.”

Kachi limped over. “And not when we’re still ready to fight.”

Chisom sat on a rock, exhausted. “So… what now?”

Adaeze stared into the darkness.

“We find out why the Serpent wants me.

We find out who betrayed me in my past life.

And we end this.”

Her golden aura flickered.

“Before it ends us.”
