C26 I Don't Want My Ex-husband to Tag Along on a Trip to the Gynecologist
The car suddenly came to a stop. Lu Yao thought they had arrived, so she sat up and peeped outside. She heard the man in the driver seat say, "Step out."
"Have we arrived?"
Shao Yunchen ignored her and unbuckled his seat belt before getting out of the car.
Lu Yao frowned, wondering why he was so quiet. However, she did not think too much of it. She opened the car door in confusion and got out.
In front of them was a restaurant.
Shao Yunchen was about to enter it. "I've already eaten!" Lu Yao blurted out in astonishment.
He turned and glanced at her strangely. "But I haven't eaten yet."
Lu Yao was instantly embarrassed. With a stiff smile, she said, "Then I'll wait for you in the car. Go inside and eat."
Shao Yunchen stilled and gave her a small, knowing smile. His eyes flashed. "Lu Yao, we had a peaceful divorce, didn't we? I don't owe you anything, and you don't owe me either. Why then do you need to go out of your way to keep your distance from me?"
Lu Yao stiffened. Her fingers subconsciously clenched and a trace of guilt appeared in her eyes. "You're thinking too much. I don't want to keep my distance from you. I just don't want to cause any unnecessary misunderstandings."
"Misunderstandings?" The man laughed in a low voice. He walked and came to a stop in front of her. "You're afraid that Xiang Dongnan would misunderstand this?" he said in a low and gravelly whisper. "He knows that you are with me right now, doesn't he? Would it be so strange if we have a normal meal together? Besides, what can I possibly do to a pregnant woman?"
Lu Yao pursed her lips tightly, unable to refute him.
He did not look at her again and walked straight inside the restaurant.
She clenched her teeth and followed him.
It was just a meal. It was not like they had never eaten together before.
He was right, she did not owe him anything. So why did she act like she had a guilty conscience? Was it because she was hiding the truth of her pregnancy from him?
Seated in a small room, Lu Yao was surprised when she watched Shao Yunchen and the waiter talk to each other without any language barrier.
She had no idea that he was so fluent in Japanese.
But it was no wonder since he was the boss of Long Teng, as she had recently found out.
How did he manage such a large company at such a young age? It was ironic that before the divorce, she knew nothing about him. But now, these things were slowly coming to light to her.
It seemed as if she had always been destined to have no future with this man.
After Shao Yunchen gave his meal order to the waiter, he turned around and saw Lu Yao staring at him blankly. "What do you want to eat?"
Lu Yao snapped out of her daze and shook her head. "I don't want to eat. I've already eaten a lot. I'm not hungry anymore."
Nonetheless, Shao Yunchen ordered some vegetable porridge for her.
Lu Yao did not realize this, so when the porridge was placed in front of her, she frowned. "I told you I'm not hungry. What is this?"
Shao Yunchen picked up a fork and spoke without raising his head. "It doesn't matter that you're my ex-wife. I don't mistreat a pregnant woman. Eat. If you don't like it, leave it."
He did not force her as he knew that pregnant women tended to have specific tastes. He had ordered a light porridge because he was afraid that she might feel queasy otherwise.
Lu Yao was speechless. From beginning to end, Shao Yunchen spoke in a calm tone. There was no annoyance in his voice. Perhaps he truly was just taking care of her, a pregnant woman.
She lowered her head to look at the colourful porridge before her and did not say another word. Picking up the spoon, she ate it one bite at a time.
The two of them ate quietly. Halfway through their meal, Lu Yao's brows furrowed. She covered her mouth and stood up quickly, running to the hallway.
"Lu Yao!" Shao Yunchen exclaimed. Throwing down his knife and fork, he chased after her.
Lu Yao did not get too far. She stood in the hallway and vomited into the nearby trash can, a pained expression on her face.
Shao Yunchen stared at her with worry. He walked over and paused for a moment, then gently patted her back and asked, "Are you all right?"
Lu Yao bent over and puked so much that tears came out of her eyes. She had eaten a lot while shopping in the afternoon.
Shao Yunchen, who was standing behind her, frowned deeply. He felt an inexplicable feeling of distress.
Just then, two women in kimonos walked past them. They glanced at the suffering Lu Yao. One of them patted Shao Yunchen's shoulder and asked, "Sir, how can you let her drink so much?"
Shao Yunchen looked at them and did not try to defend himself. He nodded apologetically and said in Japanese, "She wasn't drinking. She's pregnant."
"Pregnant?" the woman repeated. The other woman also smiled, delighted. They looked at each other, then sized up Lu Yao who still stood bent over the trashcan. "Looks like it's been a while. I think she must be three months along. How delightful for you both."
The other woman nodded, then patted Shao Yunchen on the shoulder. "Take care of her."
Shao Yunchen stared at their retreating backs at they walked away, his dark eyes slowly becoming sharper by the second.
Three months?
Lu Yao said that it had only been two months. If she was in fact three months pregnant, then whose child was this?
His eyes narrowed as he suddenly pulled her by her elbow. He scooped her up, his arms going under her knees, and carried her. "I'm taking you to the hospital," he said firmly.
Lu Yao did not understand what the women had said in Japanese. Her face turned even paler at his actions. "Hospital? Which hospital? What are you doing?! Put me down!" she said, a bit scared.
If she went to the hospital, wouldn't she be exposed? She was not stupid. Shao Yunchen might come to know that he is the father of her unborn child.
"You're vomiting. You need to go to the hospital to get it checked out," Shao Yunchen said simply as he looked down at her. He did not give voice to the doubts in his heart.
Lu Yao was flustered. She kept pushing him with her hands on his chest. "Are you crazy? This is not normal! I'm not going to the hospital for every little thing. I know what's good for me. Put me down!"
Why had she never before realized how bossy this man was?
She took a deep breath to calm down, then added, "And even if I were to go to the hospital, I wouldn't want to go with you. I don't want my ex-husband to tag along on a trip to the gynecologist."
She purposely emphasized on the 'ex-husband' part to remind him of who he was to her.
Any man would be angered by such a statement. That included Shao Yunchen. In addition to the suspicions he already had, her words stung him. A tinge of hurt flashed in his eyes as his lips twisted unpleasantly.
Lu Yao shivered in his arms. She blinked in fear, her hands going up to hug his neck tightly. She wondered if his anger would make him drop her to the floor.
But Shao Yunchen would never do that, and he tried his best to restrain his emotions. After their divorce, every thought he had of her made him feel depressed. The depression was like a balloon, being inflated again and again and near to bursting.
Closing his eyes, he breathed deeply. He opened them again and spoke, his tone still calm. "I'll take you back to the hotel."
"You're not eating?" Lu Yao blurted out.
The man glanced at her, his jaw set. She immediately shut her mouth in guilt.
Who would be in the mood to eat in this kind of a situation?
Shao Yunchen walked out and helped her sit in the rear seat of the car. He drove all the way to the hotel. All throughout he did not say a word. The atmosphere in the car reeked of tension.
Lu Yao's heart was in chaos.
