Chapter Thirty Seven: A Liar's Guilty Conscience

Lu Yao was busy with work when Mr. Ji called her to his office. Lu Yao looked at Tian Tian who was sitting on the sofa in her room. She walked over to her, then squatted down and looked at her. "Auntie is stepping out for a bit. Do you want to play here alone or come with Auntie?"

Tian Tian blinked innocently, then climbed down the sofa and pulled at Lu Yao's clothes.

Lu Yao smiled and patted her on the head. "All right, let's go together."

Lu Yao held her hand and went to the CEO's office. When she walked in, Mr. Ji looked at the child in surprise. "Who's this?"

"I'm sorry, Mr. Ji, this is my friend's child…" Lu Yao narrated Tian Tian's situation to him.

Mr. Ji nodded in understanding before he gestured for her to sit down: "Long Teng is almost ready to move to their branch in Southern City. They will start operating soon. Their representatives will be visiting us in a while. Please help us receive them."

Lu Yao was stunned. So fast?

She paused for a moment, feigning nonchalance. "Do you know who the representatives are?"

It was just the company's branch. Their boss would not personally come for the operations...​

Mr. Ji chuckled. "Probably some department heads, that's why I asked you to go. If it's anyone important, I will come and see them myself. It's nothing major. Just treat them to lunch, please. "

Lunch?

So basically she had to socialize with them. It was fine if only a few people came over, but if there were more, they would probably drink alcohol. She could not drink because she was pregnant. And what about Tian Tian?​

"Mr. Ji, please…" Lu Yao looked down at Tian Tian, worry etched across her face. Then she said in a conflicted tone, "How about I arrange for a few others from the department to receive them instead?"

Mr. Ji looked at her, then glanced at the cute and quiet little girl. He thought for a while and nodded. "Fine, if you have the time to. Go and make the arrangements. You must treat them well, don't be negligent in making them feel welcome."

"All right." Lu Yao heaved a sigh of relief, then asked with a smile, "When will they arrive?"

Mr. Ji turned his head to look outside the window and said apathetically, "Anytime now, no? Their new branch office is not far, it's just across the street. It won't take them more than a few minutes."

"..."

Lu Yao was stunned into silence. Her mind went blank, thinking that she had misheard him. She looked at Mr. Ji in a daze and asked, "You... you said that they are across the street?"​

Slowly, she turned her eyes to the building opposite the window, her heart pounding.

Their branch office was in the building opposite to Ying Xin Corporation?

Mr. Ji did not notice the stupefied expression on her face and laughed as he walked to the window, pointing to the same floor on the opposite building. He said, "Yes, what a coincidence! The Long Teng Branch is right opposite to us and on the same floor. If you have a better eyesight, you should be able to see them clearly. But I have a rather poor vision."

Lu Yao's eyes followed his gaze as her heart raced. The smile on her face was stiff, her eyes deeply conflicted.​

Did Shao Yunchen set this up on purpose?​

Did he make that call last night to gloat to her about this? Was this what he was going to warn her about?​

"All right. Now go and make the arrangements first." Mr. Ji waved his hand at her dismissively. ​

"Yes, all right." Lu Yao controlled her emotions and led Tian Tian out of the CEO's office.

When she returned to her office room, she stood by the window and stared at the building opposite them with a slightly absent-minded look on her face. ​

Suddenly, the curtains of the room in the other building that faced her own moved. In front of the giant French window was a slender figure that covered her field of vision. He was like an actor in the middle of a stage, holding her attention captive. ​

Lu Yao snapped out of her reverie and blinked her eyes. When she realized that he was not, in fact, an illusion, she bit her lips out of habit. ​

She was now certain that this man was doing all this on purpose.

Shao Yunchen stood motionlessly in the distance. He had one hand in his suit pocket. His demeanor was reserved and steady, as usual. The look on his face was not too clear in the distance, but she was certain that he was also looking at her. He seemed to already know where her assigned room was.

The more Lu Yao thought about all this, the faster her heart ran. She picked up her phone and called him without wasting another second. ​

It rang for a few seconds. From opposite his building, she clearly saw Shao Yunchen take out his phone from his pocket and place it by his ear. His handsome face was still facing her direction. ​

"Hello," a deep and calm voice answered.

"Shao Yunchen, what do you mean by this?" Lu Yao asked in a low and angry voice. ​

"What do I mean by what?"

"Don't play ignorant. You know what I'm talking about. Why did you open your branch right opposite us? Don't you dare tell me it was just a coincidence."

Shao Yunchen heard her curse but remained calm. "It was not a coincidence, just a wise choice. Thanks to the last time I visited your company, I found this place. It's a pretty good location and has pleasant surroundings." ​

"…"

Lu Yao almost choked on her next words when she heard him. What was he insinuating? "Shao Yunchen, what are you up to? We're divorced. When will you stop disturbing my peaceful life?"

After a few seconds of silence, a deep and husky laugh entered her ear. "Just because I'm your ex-husband, you feel like everything I do is with ulterior motives. Lu Yao, are you too narcissistic, or… is it that you have a liar's guilty conscience?"

He purposely laid emphasis on the last four words. His deep and husky voice had the old, inexplicable charm to it, causing Lu Yao's heart to skip a beat.

If Shao Yunchen had been next to her, he would have clearly been witness to the anger on her face. ​

Lu Yao gripped her phone tightly and clenched her teeth in silence for a long time. After waiting for her breath to calm down, she said coolly, "Clearly you don't have any ulterior motives. So do what you want."

Without waiting for his response, she cut off the call. She shot a glare across the window and left. ​

Shao Yunchen, who still stood by his window, put down his phone. His gaze remained fixed in her direction, unmoving. The light in his eyes dimmed. He seemed be in deep contemplation.

Suddenly, someone knocked on his door.

Fu Xuezi walked in. "Chen, Auntie is calling. She's asking us to come back for lunch." ​

Shao Yunchen's back faced her. He didn't turn around, his eyes still fixed on the opposite building. He only said, "You can go. I have something to do in the afternoon. Tell her that I'll be back in the evening."

Fu Xuezi looked at him keenly. "What is it? Do you need me to stay and help?"

"No need, you can return."

"…" ​

Fu Xuezi stared at his back, her brain making the connection. She felt very uncomfortable.

He was facing Ying Xin Corporation's office. Was he hoping to catch a glimpse of that woman?

Fu Xuezi clenched her fingers. A furious look flashed in her eyes, but she did not ask any further questions and simply nodded. "I'll be going then."

"…"

Lu Yao sat before her computer, her brain still preoccupied with what had just happened. Her mind was in a state of havoc.

Suddenly, she felt someone tugging at her clothes again. Startled, she looked down. Tian Tian had appeared in front of her after getting up from the sofa at some point in time. She was looking at her helplessly, like something had happened.

"What's wrong?" Lu Yao asked softly.

The little girl pursed her lips, her eyebrows knitting together. She seemed very uncomfortable and reached to take off her pants.

Lu Yao widened her eyes at her actions. Her eyes flashed. "You want to pee?"

Tian Tian shook her head no.

Lu Yao was a little confused. She tilted her head and asked tentatively, "You have to poop?"

The little girl finally nodded.

Lu Yao was amused. Worried that Tian Tian was holding it in, she reached out to pick her up. She rushed out of the office toward the bathroom.

While she was waiting inside, the receptionist called her on her cell phone.

"Ms. Lu, the representatives from Long Teng have arrived."
