"Hey, Mr. Pei, is that you?" Xia Bingning asked as she heard Pei Chenglin's voice. She had been caught off guard, and her eyes were now red and swollen.
"Yeah..." Pei Chenglin replied lazily, reaching over to remove Nian Wanwan's mask. She took a deep breath and quickly covered her mouth.
With a "snap," Pei Chenglin also pulled off her sunglasses and tossed them to the floor.
"Mr. Pei, I don't know who attacked me. Please call the police!" Xia Bingning said, rubbing her eyes as she sat on the couch, tears streaming down her face. "I can't show my face like this... boo hoo..."
Nian Wanwan rolled her eyes through her tears but was pulled into the bedroom by Pei Chenglin, who held her wrist.
"It was just a mischievous kid," he said, turning on the air conditioner to ventilate the room while pinching Nian Wanwan's cheek. "There are so many troublemakers these days. By the time I opened the door, she had already run off."
Nian Wanwan tried to pull away in frustration, but he caught her with the tool she had used. "You've got some nerve, huh?"
Pei Chenglin lowered his voice, aiming the nozzle of the pepper spray at Nian Wanwan, who immediately quieted down, pressing against the wall with her eyes shut.
"But... but I can't see anything..." Xia Bingning continued to cry, oblivious to the situation.
"I'll call a private doctor over," Pei Chenglin said seriously, directing his words at Nian Wanwan. "Let's get you checked out properly."
He lightly tapped her cheek with a playful gesture before heading out.
Nian Wanwan felt like she had shot herself in the foot. She rushed to the bathroom in the bedroom, washing her eyes for quite a while before she could barely see clearly again. Her eyes were still red, as if she'd been crying.
The private doctor was efficient, quickly applying medication to Xia Bingning's eyes and wrapping them with bandages before being ushered into the bedroom by Pei Chenglin.
At that moment, Nian Wanwan was wiping her tears and nose, and Pei Chenglin paused instinctively when he saw her.
"Make sure she's treated well," he said with a touch of sarcasm in his elegant voice. The private doctor, used to such situations, knew better than to be vague about his duties.
Nian Wanwan remained quiet, not daring to make a sound, but the woman outside had other ideas. Xia Bingning, unaccustomed to such treatment, was a bit spoiled despite being wary of Pei Chenglin's reputation.
"Mr. Pei, could you help me? I can't see anything and would like a glass of water," Xia Bingning complained softly. "I can't go out like this tomorrow. How did this even happen?"
"Well... it was bound to happen." Pei Chenglin furrowed his brow slightly, his gaze lingering meaningfully on Nian Wanwan. "Otherwise, I could have my driver take you back."
"No, no need..." Xia Bingning panicked at his words and quickly explained, "I mean, if I go back like this, my father will worry... I won't say much more... I'm sorry..."
Nian Wanwan heard this and let out a silent, cold laugh. Pei Chenglin, ever perceptive, caught it immediately. His lips curled slightly as he spoke in a deep voice, "Miss Xia, I'm sorry about what happened today. I'll make sure someone takes care of you."
He said this while keeping his eyes on Nian Wanwan, who couldn't help but shiver.
The doctor’s hand shook, dropping the cotton swab. Nian Wanwan seized the moment to stand up, intending to leave, but Pei Chenglin grabbed her wrist and pinned her against the wall.
Seeing this, the doctor picked up the medical kit and quietly exited, closing the door behind him.
"Are you looking for trouble?" Pei Chenglin's face darkened, his lips forming a silent, sardonic smile. "If you know what's good for you, behave."
Xia Bingning was deeply moved by Pei Chenglin's words and immediately responded, "Then... I appreciate it, Mr. Pei."
Pei Chenglin nodded slightly, signaling Nian Wanwan to get some water. She gritted her teeth, poured a steaming cup, and brought it over.
Xia Bingning took the cup and tentatively sipped it, immediately flinching from the heat.
“What’s wrong, Miss Xia?” Pei Chenglin asked, pretending not to notice as he crossed his arms.
“N-nothing.” Xia Bingning was worried that saying the wrong thing might upset Pei Chenglin, so she kept quiet, swallowing her discomfort.
Nian Wanwan, feeling a bit sorry for her, replaced the hot drink with a warm one. As she turned, she caught Pei Chenglin giving her a sidelong glance, his eyes fixed intently on a spot on her, with a strange curve to his lips.
She lowered her head, feeling both surprised and annoyed, and instinctively covered her chest.
Darn it, is this guy still hung up on that?
Nian Wanwan was so irritated she was grinding her teeth, but Xia Bingning had another request: “Mr. Pei, could you ask someone to help me change my clothes?”
Is she really planning to stay here?
Hearing this, Nian Wanwan smirked, her lips curling in silent mockery: “Hope you have fun.”
She tossed out the remark and turned to leave, but Pei Chenglin pulled her back, pushing her next to Xia Bingning, who grabbed her wrist a bit too tightly.
“Hurry up, please,” Xia Bingning said, still holding a grudge over the hot water incident.
“Hold on,” Pei Chenglin interjected, settling onto the couch. “Take Miss Xia to the room next door.”
