C19 What Was He Doing at This Time?
In truth, Wanwan quietly left the hospital partly to avoid Chenglin, but mostly because of her work. After leaving, she went home to change clothes and headed straight to Qin's Company.
She wasn't sure about the state of her father's company, but back when there was a stock market crisis, her father, Nian Yongchang, hadn't given her any shares. This decision saved her a lot of trouble now.
The company hallway looked the same, but employees were gathered in groups, chatting idly and looking unoccupied.
"Ahem," Wanwan cleared her throat softly.
The group quickly dispersed, and the employee seated at the desk, surrounded by others, seemed startled. They immediately clicked the mouse to close the webpage.
"Doesn't anyone have work to do?" Wanwan's expression was stern, with a hint of suppressed anger.
She glanced at the woman who had been gossiping the most and called out, "Sheng Yuan, bring the latest meeting materials to my office."
"Oh, okay."
Sheng Yuan responded from the next room, then got up to prepare the documents.
With that, Wanwan felt a bit better. She knew that once her news broke, people in the company would talk about her, but at least someone like Sheng Yuan, at the level of a special assistant, still had basic professional integrity.
Sitting down in her chair, Nian Wanwan glanced in the mirror and noticed that the pepper spray marks on her face were barely visible now, just a slight redness that didn’t hurt when pressed. This lifted her spirits considerably.
“Director Nian,” Sheng Yuan walked in slowly, placing the documents in front of Nian Wanwan and waiting for further instructions.
Nian Wanwan nodded, then paused. Finally, she spoke, “Is Director Qin in the office?”
“Uh, Director Qin hasn’t been in the office for several days,” Sheng Yuan replied honestly.
This puzzled Nian Wanwan. The last time she spoke with Qin Yanting was yesterday morning when he said he’d pick her up from the hotel. However, it was his assistant who showed up instead. Since then, Qin Yanting’s phone had been with his mother, and now he hadn’t come to the office, which was quite strange.
“Alright,” Nian Wanwan said to Sheng Yuan, “please call Qin for me.”
Perhaps Qin knew what was going on with Qin Yanting. According to his mother, Qin Yanting had been drinking to the point of stomach bleeding and was either in a hospital or recuperating at home. She had to find him.
Her father was settled in the hospital, and she trusted Pei Chenglin wouldn’t act rashly. Her only concern now was Qin Yanting. He had called her to pick him up, but she hadn’t gone. At that time, he must have been enduring the pain, trying to appear strong.
She was with Pei Chenglin, and even after escaping, she never called him. The next day, their story hit the news, yet she called Qin Yanting to pick her up.
Was he still recovering from his stomach issues back then, feeling weak?
Over the years, she appreciated Qin Yanting's kindness but couldn't reciprocate, hoping he wouldn't get too involved. Now, she owed even more, and it was all tangled up.
Knock, knock.
"Hey, come on in," Nian Wanwan said.
"Yes, Director Nian, you wanted to see me?"
Qin was always humble and cautious. Seeing him, Nian Wanwan couldn't help but notice how much he resembled Qin Yanting, though he wasn't as experienced.
"Qin, about the Nian Family..." She paused, considering it was her father's company, then continued, "The stocks are facing liquidation. What's Director Qin's plan?"
Qin Yanting was usually in charge of the Qin family's investments in the Nian Family, but Nian Wanwan couldn't understand his decision after hearing Qin's response.
Even if others were handling the aftermath, he should at least provide a clear update. He needed to inform Qin of his plans; otherwise, how could Qin carry out his work at the company?
With these thoughts, Nian Wanwan looked at Qin, puzzled.
"Director Nian... is there something wrong?" Qin swallowed nervously and explained, "The last time I contacted Director Qin, he texted me to pick you up from the hotel. After that... I really don't know anything."
"Nian Wanwan."
Nian Qingqing suddenly appeared at the door, looking coldly at the situation inside. "What's the point of picking on a mere assistant?"
Nian Wanwan felt a chill in her heart. She quickly let Qin leave her office and then got up to walk to the door, intending to shut it in Qingqing's face. It was laughable. The Nian family was in such a crisis, and she was worried sick, yet Qingqing seemed so carefree.
Now, it seemed like Qingqing was just here to watch the show, with no sense of responsibility as a member of the Nian family. No... Nian Wanwan chuckled softly. Apart from sharing the Nian surname, Qingqing had inherited almost everything from her mother.
"Nian Wanwan, even you have moments of cowardice and avoidance, just like your mother back then. Are you that afraid of me?" Qingqing's words hit Wanwan's sore spot.
But at this moment, she didn't want to argue with her.
"Dad is at X Hospital. If you have any conscience left, go see him."
With that, Nian Wanwan turned to grab her bag, ready to leave the office. Her name was all over the news. She had just taken a moment to check the latest updates. Reporters had captured her being kicked out of the Qin family, and her red, swollen eyes. They spun a tragic tale of her being abandoned, left homeless, and crying her eyes out.
She walked to the door, ready to leave, and locked the office behind her, completely ignoring Nian Qingqing's presence.
Nian Qingqing, feeling annoyed, spoke up, "Aren't you curious about where Yanting is?"
Seeing her pause, Nian Qingqing smirked and continued, "Yanting's situation isn't looking good right now."
At that moment, she genuinely didn't know how to respond. Sure, she was eager to know Yanting's whereabouts, but she didn't want to hear it from Nian Qingqing. Everyone knew about Qingqing's feelings for Yanting, so why would she easily share that information?
Thinking of this, she smiled slightly, met Qingqing's eyes, and asked, "Do you know where Yanting is?"
Qingqing, feeling triumphant, replied, "Of course."
She nodded, then returned to her expressionless demeanor and turned to leave. She didn't care if Qingqing knew or not; she'd find out Yanting's whereabouts on her own. After all, a person can't just vanish into thin air.
But seeing her indifferent attitude, Qingqing became anxious, stepped forward, and grabbed her arm. Instinctively, she shook off Qingqing's hand.
