C8 Getting Pregnant

Sheng Yuan was visibly startled, hesitating a bit before speaking, "No... not really."

"Did Qin Yanting teach you to lie?" Nian Wanwan's voice turned serious. She rarely used such a stern tone with her subordinates. "You have three seconds to tell the truth."

"Chief Inspector Nian..." Sheng Yuan sounded quite troubled, "If I tell you, can you promise not to dock my pay?"

"If it's not your fault, I won't." Nian Wanwan was always fair and impartial.

With a resigned sigh, Sheng Yuan was about to explain everything when a knock came from Nian Wanwan's end.

"Who is it?" Nian Wanwan moved the phone slightly away.

"Miss Nian, I was sent by Mr. Pei." The voice outside was clear. Nian Wanwan hesitated for a moment, then instructed Sheng Yuan on the phone, "Send me the details on WeChat. I have something to attend to."

After hanging up, Nian Wanwan allowed the person at the door to enter. A man in a somber gray suit walked in, carrying a food box, which he placed on the bedside table. "Hello, Miss Nian. My name is Pei Yuan. These were sent by Mr. Pei, and he asked that you enjoy your meal."

Was it a request or an order?

Nian Wanwan chuckled, glancing at the array of dishes on the table, noticing the abundance. "Did Pei Chenglin buy all this?"

Pei Yuan nodded with a silent, polite smile.

"Just leave it there," Wanwan yawned wearily, turning away as she lowered herself onto the bed. "I need to rest."

Pei Yuan stood still, and Wanwan closed her eyes in resignation. She suspected this was Chenglin's doing again. If she didn't eat, this man wouldn't leave.

It wasn't that she wanted to oppose Chenglin on purpose; she just couldn't muster an appetite with the unresolved issues at work weighing on her mind. Wanwan's thoughts drifted as she gradually succumbed to exhaustion, eventually falling asleep.

In a haze, she felt a touch on her face, waking her abruptly. She opened her eyes to find Chenglin gazing down at her, his eyes calm, a lazy, mischievous smile playing on his lips.

"It's you," Wanwan's voice was a bit hoarse as she subtly moved his hand away and sat up. "Is something wrong?"

"I heard you refused to eat what I bought," Chenglin's voice was casual, yet carried a slight chill as he sat on the edge of her bed.

"I'm not hungry," Wanwan lied, but her stomach betrayed her with a loud growl.

Talk about embarrassing.

Wanwan rubbed her stomach, trying to hide her embarrassment. Chenglin let out a soft chuckle, raising an eyebrow as he picked up a bowl of porridge and offered it to her with a spoon.

"Want to try some?" His voice was low and somber.

Wanwan's lips moved slightly as she caught a whiff of the porridge's aroma, but for some reason, her stomach churned.

"Ugh—" She quickly covered her mouth as a wave of nausea hit her, turning her head away as her vision blurred from retching.

Pei Chenglin's face darkened, a shadow crossing his handsome features. Was he really that off-putting?

Unable to hold it in, Wanwan bent over and grabbed the trash can, dry heaving until the last bit of bile was expelled. Exhausted, she straightened up, only to find Chenglin had already left.

Did she disgust him that much?

With a sigh, Wanwan leaned against the headboard. The door opened again, and a nurse came in with Chenglin, who began a whirlwind of cleaning and airing out the room before sitting back down in the chair.

"You know, if you're such a germaphobe, maybe hospitals aren't your thing," Wanwan frowned. "Mr. Pei, you keep visiting me. Aren't you worried my husband might get the wrong idea?"

The way she said "my husband" was particularly affectionate, making Chenglin narrow his eyes dangerously, casting her a sidelong glance before letting out a sarcastic laugh. "Director Qin is quite busy these days, isn't he?"

Wanwan didn't respond, but she eyed him suspiciously. "How do you know that?"

Pei Chenglin chuckled softly, lifting his hand to teasingly pinch her chin, a hint of threat in his voice. "What do you think?"

Nian Wanwan's heart skipped a beat, clearly flustered. "What did you do to Qin's?"

Pei Chenglin raised an eyebrow, his tone mocking. "Scared? Are you worried about what I might do to Qin's, or are you concerned about Qin Yanting?"

Nian Wanwan bit her lip, her fingers unconsciously gripping the bedsheet beneath her, her voice restrained. "Whatever is between us, don't drag them into it."

"Hmm..." Pei Chenglin responded lazily, his eyes growing colder, mocking her further. "Such deep feelings. You married Qin Yanting so recklessly back then; it must have been true love."

"Pei Chenglin!" She spat out his name, anger flashing in her eyes. "What exactly do you want?"

Pei Chenglin stood up calmly, picking up a bowl of soup. "Care to try some?"

Her gaze swept over it, her expression darkening.

"Oh? Are you pregnant?" His dark eyes were chillingly cold, focusing on her abdomen hidden under the blanket. "Afraid I'll poison him?"

The blatant sarcasm pierced Nian Wanwan's most vulnerable spot like needles, and she gritted her teeth, her eyes filled with hatred and helplessness. "Thanks for the well wishes. If I am, you'll be the first to know."
