C10 A New Brotherinlaw

Xu Huanxi's eyes twitched uncontrollably, her thoughts too jumbled to form coherent sentences. She hadn't even laid the groundwork when he dropped a bombshell on her.

The Old Ancestor clutched his chest, looking utterly stricken. "Huanxi, have you truly married this man? You... you really can't forgive Tunan? He's such a good man; what on earth did he do wrong?"

Hearing that name made Xu Huanxi's mouth turn downward, her heart aching at the mere mention. Jiang Tunan deserved a lifetime of trouble for seducing her and then irresponsibly abandoning her!

Chu Rusi found the name oddly familiar. Tunan? Could it be Jiang Tunan? He had made sure to acquaint himself with domestic affairs before returning, including the recent rise of his brother-in-law, Jiang Tunan.

Jiang Tunan, the youngest son of the Jiangshan Group, had always been overshadowed by his older brother and was thus underutilized. A year prior, he had taken a mid-level position at Chumen Horizon and charmed his way into his sister Chu Xingyun's life. To secure a marriage alliance with the Chu Family, the Jiangs had positioned Jiang Tunan as the heir apparent to their empire.

Could it be that his new brother-in-law and his young wife had a past fling?

Chu Rusi's lips curled into a smirk, his demeanor still warm and well-mannered. "Grandma, I assure you, I'm no less of a catch than he is."

The Old Ancestor shot Chu Rusi a look, her expression saying it all—good looks can be deceiving.

She then turned her glare to her granddaughter, anxiety hidden behind her stern gaze. "You didn't break things off with Tunan because you've fallen for him, did you?" Her granddaughter had been with Jiang Tunan for over a year, and they were close to sealing the deal. She had been looking forward to officiating their wedding, but the news of their split had nearly sent her to her sickbed.

Observing the Old Ancestor, it was clear her sympathies lay with Jiang Tunan, even after the breakup. Xu Huanxi felt a sour twist in her stomach, but she knew she had to confront the issue. Sooner or later, she would have to make her stance clear to her grandmother.

She spoke with grave sincerity, her voice tinged with despair, "Grandma, I'm not happy with Tunan. Rusi treats me well, I really like him, and he's promised to take care of me for life."

Despite their breakup, she refrained from tarnishing Jiang Tunan's reputation. It wasn't a case of infidelity; they simply weren't happy together.

The Old Ancestor was livid, yet her granddaughter's resolve was unyielding. Once she made up her mind, not even a collision with the south wall would make her turn back.

It appeared that there was no hope for reconciliation between her granddaughter and Tunan. However, this Mr. Chu's intention to marry her precious granddaughter was another matter—one she might not consent to.

She scrutinized Chu Rusi intently, then with a rare display of solemnity, she waved the others out of the room. "I need to have a word with him."

Xu Huanxi cast an anxious glance at Chu Rusi, wondering if her grandmother's cunning might frighten him away.

Chu Rusi offered a reassuring smile and signaled Xu Huanxi to step out. Meeting the parents was a minor challenge for him; he had charmed the most hard-nosed of bankers—surely he could handle an elderly lady.

Xu Yinuo eagerly ushered Xu Huanxi out, bombarded with questions. Once outside the ward, he faced Xu Huanxi with a stern look. "Mommy, honesty will earn you leniency, resistance will only make things tougher."

The sudden addition of a 'Daddy' to his life was too much to process, and he was on the verge of calling the police!

Xu Huanxi gently squeezed Xu Yinuo's cheek, searching for a way to explain that a child could understand. "Yinuo, Grandma's time is running short. Rusi is a good man who has agreed to marry me, to give Grandma some peace of mind."

Xu Yinuo fell silent. The concept of death always rendered words inadequate. The Old Ancestor's illness was a formidable adversary, and despite his remarkable abilities, he was no deity capable of altering the Book of Life and Death.
