C4 Let's Get Ready!
Dinner was ready. A couple of days ago, Elder Fu received some seafood from an old friend, and knowing Xinyue loved seafood, he had the kitchen prepare it all.
"Xinyue, you're too thin. Eat more," Elder Fu instructed the staff to place the crab closer to her, making it easier for her to reach.
The strong smell of seafood hit Xinyue, and her stomach churned. "Ugh!" She rushed to the bathroom and threw up. Having not eaten much that morning, all she could manage was some stomach acid. This must be morning sickness, she thought.
After freshening up, Xinyue returned to the table. Mrs. Zhang, the experienced cook, noticed her discomfort. "Miss Jiang, are you pregnant? My daughter-in-law just found out she's expecting, and she had similar symptoms."
"No, I just ate something bad. I went to the hospital a couple of days ago, and I'm not pregnant." Xinyue didn't want the Fu family to know about her pregnancy. Knowing Elder Fu's nature, if he found out, he would never agree to her divorcing Shaochen. Moreover, the Fu family wouldn't let their bloodline leave so easily. If they knew, taking the child away would be nearly impossible.
Seeing her response, Xinyue noticed the light in Elder Fu's eyes dim. He had always wanted to hold a great-grandchild but was wary of putting too much pressure on the younger generation.
Hai Xia sneered from the side, "Married for a year and still no sign of a baby. What's the use of a hen that won't lay eggs?"
Xinyue remained silent, unsure of what to say. Even though she and Shaochen had been married for a year, he had barely spent a month at home, and he never touched her. If it weren't for that one time when Shaochen was drunk, who knows when she would have gotten pregnant.
Elder Fu slammed his chopsticks down hard. "Hai Xia, you're getting out of line. Your son comes home only a few times a year, and it's always Xinyue who keeps me company. All you do is criticize her."
"Don't upset yourself, Dad. I'll call Shaochen right now to come and see you," Hai Xia replied, not daring to anger her father-in-law. If he ended up in the hospital, Fu Chenghui wouldn't let her off the hook.
After receiving Hai Xia's call, Shaochen drove over. Seeing his grandson, Elder Fu's tone turned stern again. "You're never home. It's always Xinyue who keeps me company. I don't know what use you are, always making me angry."
Shaochen replied calmly, "Grandpa, I'll visit more often."
"Don't worry about visiting me. Take good care of Xinyue. You don't even know she's not feeling well. Is that how a husband should be? Since you're here, take Xinyue home with you. Drive safely," Elder Fu said as he prepared to head upstairs to rest, not feeling well himself.
Jiang Xinyue accompanied Fu Shaochen to the garage to get the car. Today, he was driving a Maybach, one she hadn't seen him drive before, likely a new purchase.
Once they were in the car, silence hung between them.
Suddenly, Fu Shaochen spoke up, "After our divorce, I'll compensate you. I'll give you ten million dollars and the house in the suburbs."
"Do you think I married you for money?" Jiang Xinyue looked directly at Fu Shaochen, her gaze unwavering.
"Didn't you? What else could you want?" Fu Shaochen was puzzled by Jiang Xinyue. She was an orphan who had gone to great lengths to marry him. Wasn't it for the money?
"You don't understand me at all, Fu Shaochen. I don't want a single penny. Just visit Grandpa more often," Jiang Xinyue said with a bittersweet smile. She hadn't realized that this was how Fu Shaochen saw her all along. He had no idea how much she loved him.
Fu Shaochen glanced at the woman sitting in the passenger seat. Her hair was tied in a half-up bun, revealing a slender, graceful neck. Her eyes were as deep and clear as autumn waters. She was delicate and beautiful. The thought of other men appreciating her beauty, possessing her, and having children with her after their divorce made him narrow his eyes. A strange restlessness, like a fire, stirred within him.
