C1 Jiang Family Declines the Marriage(part I)

"I heard young General Jiang just won a great victory and returned to the capital yesterday, earning the emperor's favor. Truly something to celebrate!"

"Today, General Jiang and the Marquis are coming to propose marriage to our Third Miss. It's truly an honor for the Su family."

The speaker was Su Zhiguo, the Great Old Master of the Su family.

Third Miss, Su Yu'an, felt a headache coming on. She wasn't originally from this world. Ten years ago, she had crossed over to this place, and after a decade of transformation, she had fully integrated, becoming the Third Miss of the Su family.

She didn't know this General Jiang Qixing, yet she was bound to him by an engagement contract. Now, with the wedding date approaching, Jiang Qixing's father had personally come to propose.

In the hall, General Jiang's expression was rather serious. He said, "Master Su, there's been a misunderstanding."

"A misunderstanding?"

"The reason I'm here today is not to propose," General Jiang continued, his voice commanding respect without anger. "I'm here to call off the engagement."

Everyone was stunned. General Jiang had come not to propose, but to break off the engagement! If this got out, the entire Su family would become the laughingstock of the capital!

"What does the General mean by this?" Su Zhiguo demanded angrily. "Are you trying to insult the Su family?"

The engagement was well-known to everyone! To break it off now, where would the Su family's honor be?

"Mr. Su, please, let's not rush."

General Jiang's brother, the Marquis of Rongyang, quickly stepped in to mediate.

"We're here today not just to call off the engagement, but also to propose a new one. My brother's intention is for the marriage between our families to proceed, but it seems the bride may need to be someone else."

Upon hearing this, Su Yu'an felt a sense of foreboding.

Sure enough, the Marquis continued, "Qixing returned yesterday and told us he happened to pass by a temple and met Miss Lin Jiaoer!"

"Miss Lin went to the temple to offer incense but unfortunately ran into some robbers. Qixing heroically saved her, and he fell for her at first sight. They've already had physical contact, and if word gets out, wouldn't Miss Lin's reputation be ruined?"

Su Yu'an frowned at this. What a coincidence?

Lin Jiaoer was her cousin, and the idea that she just happened to encounter robbers at the temple and was conveniently rescued by Jiang Qixing seemed too coincidental to believe.

Although Su Yu'an didn't agree with the marriage and wasn't eager to rush into it, being rejected in such a manner was hard to swallow.

With the Marquis having said so much, Su Zhiguo hesitated, then finally sighed, "What a mess!"

Family scandals should remain private. Since Jiang Qixing saved someone, if this matter is pursued, it won't just embarrass both families but could also tarnish the entire Su family's reputation!

The Su family valued their reputation immensely and naturally wanted to keep this matter under wraps.

"Great Aunt, Uncle, Third Uncle," Lin Jiaoer said, covering her face as she cried, looking utterly pitiful. She stepped forward to admit her mistake: "Please don't blame General Jiang. This was all my fault. I intended to go to the temple yesterday to pray for blessings for Great Aunt and my cousins, but on my way down the mountain, I was ambushed by bandits. If it weren't for the Eldest Young Master, I fear my honor would have been lost..."

Her eyes brimmed with tears, making her appear incredibly sympathetic.

Old Madam Su was deeply moved and immediately made a decision: "This isn't Jiaoer's fault. As the legitimate daughter of the Earl Mansion, she is a perfect match for the Eldest Young Master Jiang, both in status and family background. Let's settle this matter as such!"

In a society that revered filial piety, with Old Madam Su having spoken, Su Zhiguo dared not object.
