The Marquis of Rongyang was taken aback, his face turning a shade of purple, unable to respond. According to tradition, a woman who is rejected from an engagement, regardless of her previous status, becomes a social outcast, making remarriage nearly impossible.

"How dare you!" Su Zhiguo scolded. "Everyone here is your elder. How can you speak so disrespectfully in front of them?"

"Family elders?" Su Yu'an scoffed, her voice firm. "When I was rejected from my engagement, did any of you consider my situation? And now you decide to pull rank as elders?"

Su Zhiguo trembled with anger, his face turning pale, but he couldn't argue back.

The Rongyang Marquis and General Jiang both turned their eyes to Su Yu'an. The Jiang family had been in the wrong for calling off the engagement, yet none of them expected that the one to publicly call them out would be Su Yu'an, who seemed so quiet and reserved.

This girl had some spirit!

"The Third Miss has a point, but..." The Rongyang Marquis struggled for words, clearing his throat before continuing, "But a young woman's reputation is really..."

"Really what?" Su Yu'an interrupted coldly, challenging him. "Is Lin Jiaoer's reputation important, but mine isn't?"

Faced with Su Yu'an's questioning, the Rongyang Marquis was left speechless.

What a sharp tongue she had!

"Third Cousin is right, Grandmother. I think we should call off this engagement. Losing my reputation is one thing, but if it tarnishes Third Cousin's name, Jiaoer could never be forgiven!"

Lin Jiaoer sobbed, wiping her tears. "I'll go to the monastery tomorrow, shave my head, and spend my life in solitude, atoning for this."

She was forcing Old Madam Su to take a stand for her!

Old Madam Su turned pale with fright, nearly fainting. The Peaceful Longevity Hall was in chaos.

Su Zhiguo glared angrily at Su Yu'an. However, Lin Jiaoer was in the wrong first, and Su Yu'an was the rightful Miss of the Su family, while Lin Jiaoer was from an outside branch. He couldn't be too biased.

Su Zhiguo gritted his teeth and shot a furious look at Su Zhiliang. "Third Brother, you've really raised a fine daughter!"

Su Zhiliang, Su Yu'an's father, felt his anger rise. His daughter was being rejected, yet he was the one being scolded by Su Zhiguo. Just as he was about to speak, Su Yu'an beat him to it, her voice cold and steady.

"The engagement can be called off, but I have one condition."

The Rongyang Marquis's eyes flickered with interest. "What condition? Let's hear it."

"From now on, the engagement with the Jiang family is null and void!" Su Yu'an raised her voice, declaring firmly, "But it's not Jiang Qixing who is breaking it off with me. It's me, Su Yu'an, who is breaking it off with him!"

In this male-dominated era, dreaming of marital freedom was almost like chasing a fantasy.
