This side of his face was smooth, unscarred, with clear lines and a defined contour, his sun-kissed skin showing no signs of his nearly forty years. Unconsciously, Xiaowu found herself captivated...

Unexpectedly, Sichen seemed to sense her gaze and suddenly turned his head. In that instant, Xiaowu saw the other side of his face, the one scarred by fire, with twisted, uneven skin that made her shiver. Thank goodness for the streetlamp; if it had been pitch dark, she might have thought she'd seen a ghost.

Xiaowu quickly averted her eyes, but it was too late. Sichen abruptly hit the brakes, pulling the car over to the side of the road. Without the night breeze, the air felt a bit stifling. Steadying herself, Xiaowu asked, "Wh-why did we stop?"
