C5 Shadows of the past
Amelia’s hands trembled as she followed the man who had appeared from nowhere. Every step felt heavier, every shadow deeper, as if the room itself was closing in.
“You don’t know me,” he said softly, his voice eerily calm. “But I know everything about you.”
Her pulse jumped. “Everything? Who are you?”
He smiled faintly. “Let’s just say… I’m someone who watches. Someone who knows the Blackwoods well. And I know why Adrian left you.”
Amelia froze. Every nerve in her body screamed at her to run, to escape. But she stayed, curiosity and fear warring inside her.
Adrian’s words from earlier echoed in her mind: I don’t leave what’s mine.
A sudden surge of anger and frustration bubbled up. She had spent three years questioning herself, wondering if she had done something wrong, and now… the truth might finally come out.
The man continued, “Adrian isn’t the only one keeping secrets. There are things about him, about his family, that even he doesn’t fully control. And you… Amelia, you’re now part of this world whether you like it or not.”
Her breath caught. “Part of his world? I’m not a child to protect. I’m not someone to manipulate!”
The man’s eyes softened, just slightly. “You’re more than that. But power… power doesn’t care about innocence. It doesn’t care about hearts. And the Blackwoods… well, let’s just say they have their own rules.”
Amelia clenched her fists, anger and fear mixing into something raw. “What do you want from me?”
He tilted his head, the shadow of a smirk playing on his lips. “To warn you. Adrian may love you—or think he does—but this world? It’s dangerous. And your presence here… it complicates everything.”
Her stomach twisted. Complicates everything? She had thought Adrian’s world was just business, deals, and money. Now she realized it was a battlefield.
Suddenly, a soft click echoed behind her. She turned instinctively, heart racing, to see Adrian stepping into the room, his eyes ablaze.
“You’ve been talking about me,” he said quietly, voice low and dangerous.
Amelia’s head whipped toward him, fury and fear flaring. “You’re supposed to protect me!”
He stepped closer, stopping just inches from her. “I know,” he said, eyes darkening. “And I will. But first… you need to understand what you’re really facing.”
Her breath hitched as his hand brushed hers—accidental, or maybe not—but the fire it ignited was undeniable.
“Adrian, I—” she began, but he cut her off.
“No,” he said firmly, gaze locked on hers. “Not now. This isn’t about us. Not yet. It’s about survival.”
The man who had brought her here stepped back, giving them space. “Consider this a warning,” he said. “The past isn’t gone. It’s waiting in the shadows, and it’s coming for both of you.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened. “You heard him.”
Amelia’s stomach churned, a mix of dread and desire swirling inside her. Adrian wasn’t just a man anymore. He was a storm. And she was standing right in the middle of it.
As she stared at him, she realized something terrifying: she didn’t want to escape the storm. She wanted to survive it… with him.
But even as that thought crossed her mind, a sudden knock echoed on the door.
Both their heads turned.
A moment of silence.
Then the doorknob began to turn.
And Amelia’s heart froze.
