C6 Close encounter

The doorknob clicked, and the door swung open just a crack. Amelia’s breath hitched as a tall figure stepped inside, face hidden in shadows.

Adrian moved in front of her instinctively, his posture stiff, muscles coiled like a panther ready to strike. “Who’s there?” His voice was calm, but every syllable carried a warning.

The figure paused, then stepped fully into the light. Amelia’s eyes widened.

It was someone she recognized. Someone who had haunted her nightmares long before Adrian ever did.

“Lena?” she whispered, disbelief twisting her stomach.

The woman smiled faintly, a cruel, knowing smile. “Hello, Amelia. Long time no see.”

Adrian’s hand tightened around her shoulder—not harsh, but possessive. “What are you doing here?”

Lena’s gaze flicked between them, calculating, almost predatory. “I came to deliver a message… and to remind you that some pasts never stay buried.”

Amelia’s chest tightened. Memories she had tried desperately to forget surged back: the nights she cried herself to sleep, the moments she’d wished she had walked away forever. And now, here she was, standing in the same room with the two men who had shaped her world.

Adrian’s eyes darkened, burning into Lena. “You step one foot into this house, and you’re leaving in pieces. Understand?”

Lena tilted her head, unimpressed. “I’m not afraid of him… or you. And neither should you be, Amelia. You’re going to need courage. More than you’ve ever imagined.”

Amelia’s stomach churned. Courage? She barely had enough to stand upright. And yet, she felt it—an ember of something powerful rising inside her. She would not cower. Not again.

Adrian’s gaze softened slightly on her, the possessive tension replaced by something more intimate. “Stay behind me,” he murmured. “No matter what happens.”

Her heart thumped, not just from fear, but from the closeness of him. His hand brushed hers accidentally—or perhaps deliberately—and a shiver ran through her.

Lena’s eyes narrowed, sensing the unspoken tension between them. “You’ve grown close,” she said softly. “But closeness isn’t protection. Not in this world.”

Adrian’s lips pressed into a thin line. “Then you’ll learn soon enough why you shouldn’t underestimate me.”

A sudden noise from the hallway snapped everyone’s attention. Footsteps—fast, deliberate—approaching the room.

Adrian’s eyes flicked to Amelia, dark and intense. “Hide.”

Before she could react, Lena moved to block her, her expression unreadable. “You think you can protect her?” she asked, almost taunting.

Adrian’s jaw clenched, muscles taut. “I will. No one touches her.”

The footsteps grew louder. The doorknob rattled again.

Amelia’s breath caught. She could feel the storm closing in—danger, secrets, and Adrian’s possessive presence all at once.

And she realized, with a shiver she couldn’t suppress, that her life had just become far more complicated than she had ever imagined.

Because this time… the shadows weren’t just following Adrian. They were closing in on her too.

And nothing would ever be the same again.
