C15 Chapter 15
She couldn’t stand this kind of thing. In her last life, she’d have played Robin Hood—steal from the rich, give to the poor. But in this one…
“Should I go take a look?” Yang Zimu raised an eyebrow, weighed her own abilities against the police department’s, then shook her head. “Nah. I’ll quietly track down the killer, then go clean out his family’s money. That’s the real move!”
No sooner said than done. Yang Zimu went to the police station to dig up the files, followed the trail, and tracked people down.
Then, from the victim’s family’s rambling nonsense, she picked out the key detail—and headed straight for the wealthy part of town.
“Tsk, tsk. Knew it—rich guy.” Yang Zimu clicked her tongue. “This is basically an open invitation…”
She hopped the wall into the gated community, locked onto her target, and when no one was paying attention, slipped inside with a quick vault. It didn’t take long to find what she came for.
This time around, she was going to live a full, happy life—which meant she needed a whole lot of cash as a foundation.
The world looked peaceful on the surface, but it was packed with everything that wasn’t.
She’d thought class lines were already obvious back in her day. Coming here, she realized she’d been naive.
Sucking up to the powerful, stepping on the weak, constant comparisons, petty humiliation—school was where it happened the most.
And she’d been unlucky enough to get publicly trashed by that little snake Lee Jiating.
“I’m petty like that,” Yang Zimu muttered with a cold glint in her eyes as she tore through drawers and cabinets. No cash—but she did find a diamond necklace set.
One look at the cut, shine, and craftsmanship told her it was worth a fortune. Yang Zimu flashed a wicked grin, slipped out of the mansion while dodging the cameras before anyone came in, and vanished from the neighborhood in a few quick moves.
Fast as the wind—people on the street didn’t even get a good look at her.
When the pawnshop saw Yang Zimu again, the clerk’s mouth curled into a smile. “Ms. Yang, what are we pawning today?”
Yang Zimu boldly set the diamond necklace on the counter. “Don’t try to lowball me, boss, okay?”
The middle-aged man in round glasses wouldn’t dare.
Last time she’d set Jiating up, her own pawnshop had nearly gone under.
“Heh… how could I…”
“Good. Wire the money straight into my account.” With that, Yang Zimu turned and walked off.
That afternoon, the news broke: a wealthy man’s home had been burglarized. A priceless diamond necklace was gone, and he’d coughed up blood and landed in the hospital.
Yang Zimu practically skipped along the stone path through a small grove, happier than she’d been in a long time.
With a single diamond necklace, she could buy a mansion in City A. How could she not be thrilled?
“Mm… if I show up to buy it myself, it’ll leave a trail. Better have that jerk Zhang Tianzhe handle it for me.”
Decision made, Yang Zimu called Zhang Tianzhe. After explaining the house purchase, she warned, “Got it?”
“Don’t worry, boss. No one’s gonna trace it back to you.”
On paper, Yang Zimu was just a kid who’d grown up in an orphanage. Getting into the best university in the city was already a miracle. If she suddenly had the money to buy a luxury home, people would talk.
Hearing Zhang Tianzhe’s eager promise, Yang Zimu finally hung up, satisfied. She looked up—and saw Gu Yanjue standing a few yards away.
They stared at each other for a few seconds. Yang Zimu immediately turned around to leave.
Gu Yanjue caught up and blocked her path, sounding annoyed. “Zimu, why do you run the second you see me?”
“Idiot. Like I want to see you?” Yang Zimu rolled her eyes and poked his chest. “Move. A good dog doesn’t block the road!”
“I haven’t eaten…” Gu Yanjue called after her weakly. “I’m starving…”
