C16 Chapter 16

Yang Zimu was speechless. “Sister Xiaoli makes breakfast every day. If you don’t eat, whose fault is that?”

“If you don’t eat... then I won’t either...”

“Idiot! Who said I didn’t eat?” Harsh as she sounded, she still walked over to Gu Yanjue, annoyed and helpless. “Come on. I’ll take you to get some food...”

Inside the restaurant, Gu Yanjue happily ordered a whole table of dishes, and Yang Zimu stood off to the side watching him shovel food into his mouth.

“Oh, right. I can’t just keep calling you a moron, dummy, idiot, jerk, and freeloader forever...” Yang Zimu propped her chin on her hand, her eyes flickering. “What’s your name?”

At that, the brow hidden beneath Gu Yanjue’s long hair twitched.

Moron? Dummy? Idiot? Jerk? Freeloader?!

“Zimu... my name’s Jue. Just call me Jue.” He let out a small, awkward laugh, forcing down his irritation, then grinned wide. “Jue, okay...”

Yang Zimu nodded. Figuring he really did have something off upstairs, she didn’t press it. She stood to leave. “Got it. You eat. I’m going.”

“But you haven’t eaten yet.”

“I’m not hungry.” With that, she opened the door and walked out, leaving Gu Yanjue alone in the private room.

Just then, the door opened again, and an elegant woman stepped in.

She looked at Gu Yanjue and sighed softly, then sat down beside him. Eyeing the spread of food, she raised an eyebrow. “You... I’ve been looking for you everywhere. Never thought you’d be here in the city.”

“And you still recognized me like this. That’s my mom for you.” Gu Yanjue set down his chopsticks, stretched his arms, and lounged back in the cushioned chair. His long legs crossed as he looked toward the small figure at the intersection outside, the corner of his mouth lifting.

The woman followed his gaze. When she saw Yang Zimu, her eyes filled with a warm smile. “I was even thinking of introducing you to a few girls, and you went and found one yourself. Not bad, not bad.”

“Mom, don’t try to set us up.” Gu Yanjue immediately crossed his arms and cut her off, his face turning serious. “She’s just messing around. She’s not qualified to be part of this family.”

He’d already looked into Yang Zimu’s background.

An orphan from the Yinghai Orphanage, she’d relied on her brains to get into the best university in the city on a full scholarship.

Other than that, there was nothing else to dig up.

A broke nineteen-year-old college student dating and marrying the CEO of the Ry Group?

That would be the biggest piece of gossip in the finance world.

Just thinking about it made his skin crawl.

Duan Jie shook her head, disagreeing. “I really like her. Look how good she is to you.”

“That’s how you treat an idiot,” Gu Yanjue shot back. “It’s not ‘good to me’ at all.” Growing impatient, he moved to usher Duan Jie out. “Mom, go. And don’t tell Dad I’m here—this cannot get out!”

Duan Jie couldn’t win against him, so she just laughed. “Fine, fine, I’m going. Just have your fun and come back—don’t wait until your dad is really furious.”

“I know.” Gu Yanjue raised an eyebrow. Then he suddenly thought of the safe in Yang Zimu’s room. “Mom, go to my office at Ry and check whether my safe is still there.”

“What’s going on?”

“Just check. I need to be sure.”

After seeing her out, Gu Yanjue fell into thought.

How had she gotten the safe out? Did Ry have a mole?

That night, when Gu Yanjue returned to the Zizhu apartment complex, no one was home.

Xiaoli was easy to explain—she’d gone to her boyfriend’s place and wouldn’t be back tonight.

As for Huang Canxin, that idiot was probably off at the night market or somewhere. It was already late, and she still hadn’t returned.

He walked inside, went straight to Yang Zimu’s room like he’d done it a hundred times, and opened the door.

Curiosity flared. All of a sudden, he wanted to see what else was in Yang Zimu’s room.
