Night fell, swallowing the entire central region. It was darker here than anywhere else. The moonlight was cold as water. Now and then, a few birds or wild creatures darted past—only to be suddenly engulfed by rolling banks of white mist. The mist seemed almost alive; after swallowing a bird, it even smacked its lips, as if savoring the taste.
