C66 The Attack on the Mountain Stronghold
It was a dark night at the top of a silent mountain.
In the dead of the night, the city wall formed by broken boulders looked like a huge black dragon crawling on the ground at the top of the mountain.
Zuo Feng carefully hid his body behind a tree and spread out his spirit energy to examine every part of the city wall. His eyes were no longer of much use now, so he simply closed them tightly. This way, he could better focus and sense all the movements on the city wall.
However, after a quarter of an hour had passed, Zuo Feng began to feel a little tired, and this constant inspection was still a little too much for him. However, he was already sure that there was not a single trace of life on that wall.
After a moment of hesitation, Zuo Feng had already made up his mind. He quickly jumped out from behind the tree and kept close to the ground. The place he was hiding at was the edge of a forest at the peak of the mountain. Dozens of miles further on was an open area, and it would be difficult to find a place to hide.
Zuo Feng could only bend his body as low as he could. When he moved his legs, his knees almost touched his chest. If one stood on top of the city wall and looked down, they would vaguely see a black figure moving like a whirlwind, turning left and right as it moved towards the city wall.
If someone else were to suddenly appear on the city walls, it would be very difficult to lock onto them with a bow and arrow. Even though he had already confirmed that there was no one on the city wall, after all that had happened, Zuo Feng did not dare to be the slightest bit careless.
Soon, he arrived at the city wall. The city wall was only about thirty to forty feet high, so he had no choice but to carefully climb up the wall. Fortunately, the stones used for the construction of the city wall were of different sizes, so there were gaps for him to use to climb. With Zuo Feng's skill, he managed to reach the top of the city wall within a few breaths.
He carefully revealed half of his head and looked at the top of the city wall. After finding no one around, he took a deep breath and jumped up. His feet made almost no sound as they landed on the rough wall. Zuo Feng immediately looked around and saw two corpses lying on the ground not far away from him.
Zuo Feng walked over to the two bodies. There was a faint smell of rot coming from them. It seemed like they had been dead for a few days. Judging from his appearance, he should be the bandit responsible for keeping watch in the village. He checked the surrounding and didn't find any traces of a fight. In other words, the two were ambushed and killed while they were on guard.
After seeing all these and thinking about the dead bodies of the bandits hanging on the wooden stakes outside the village, Zuo Feng was even more certain of his speculation.
After walking around the city wall for a while, he found six corpses that were also dead. Seeing that there were no more clues, Zuo Feng decided not to waste any more time here. Zuo Feng looked at the arrangement of the city wall and after confirming his position, he floated down from the wall.
If he were to climb up the wall, it would take some effort but if he were to jump down from here, Zuo Feng was quite confident. He only picked a protruding rock in the middle of the wall to cushion his fall onto the ground.
After landing on the ground, Zuo Feng immediately entered a small house that he had been watching from the start. As soon as he entered, he smelled the stench of rotting corpses.
Zuo Feng chose to enter the house first for his own purpose. The house was located close to the wall, and from the looks of it, it was meant for the city guards to rest after their shift. From the window of the house, he could clearly see the other three directions. This way, if there was any change, Zuo Feng would be able to detect it immediately.
All these were planned by Zuo Feng in a short amount of time after he came to the city and saw the arrangements below. He firmly believed that only by being careful would one be able to live for a long time. After all, his cultivation level wasn't high and he didn't have much experience. Then, he would have to rely on his own calm analysis and careful actions in order to survive in such a harsh environment. This was what he thought and did.
After a simple examination in the room, there was nothing else apart from the three corpses. From the looks of their deaths, they had all been killed in their dreams. In Zuo Feng's mind, the three of them came back from a different job. The moment he fell asleep, a few grey figures sneaked into the room and killed the three of them without a sound.
The three of them had all been killed in one move and had done it cleanly. It was obvious that they were experienced in this aspect. Judging from the wounds, they should be the same as the six people on the city wall. To be able to kill these few people without feeling a thing, the killer's cultivation must be not low, at least at the Body Tempering realm.
After observing from the window for a while, he used his spirit energy to check again. After making sure that there was no one hiding in the dark, Zuo Feng then left the house. After continuously inspecting a few houses, basically everyone inside was killed in their dreams. Zuo Feng did not inspect the house in the same way as before. It seemed that the people here had already been killed, and the killers had already left for quite some time.
After jumping onto the roof, Zuo Feng took a closer look at the surrounding buildings. A courtyard that was several times larger than the other houses appeared in his line of sight. He was very clear that this should be where the leader of these bandits was. If he was able to discover anything else, this was probably the only place.
After jumping down from the roof, Zuo Feng released all of his speed and in a few seconds, he was outside the wall of the manor. The wall of the courtyard wasn't too high. With a stomp of his feet, his body shot towards the wall like an arrow. With a slight pause, he was able to clearly see the largest house in the courtyard.
It was a two-story building that was about the size of the one the eldest lady of the City Lord's Mansion lived in. It was just that it looked simple and crude. He walked into the hall of the building. The moment he entered, he could smell the stench of blood, which was accompanied by a rancid smell. Zuo Feng felt like vomiting.
Looking around, there was not a single piece of furniture left in the hall. The surrounding walls and columns were all filled with the marks of battles and splashes of blood on top of them. At this moment, the blood had already turned into a dark brown blood scab. It seemed that they weren't able to successfully carry out the assassination as they had done before. The bandits had resisted with all their might.
Zuo Feng walked into the hall and carefully searched for a place to rest. There were corpses and broken limbs everywhere. Zuo Feng endured the thick stench of blood and rotting stench as he walked into the hall.
Suddenly, his pupils dilated, he ran to a corner and grabbed a short sword from beside a mangled corpse. Although this short sword looked very ordinary, when he slowly took out a short sword from his bosom and placed both together, Zuo Feng's gaze immediately became serious.
In his right hand was an exquisite looking short sword, it came from the bundle of little six children that he had killed earlier. Although the short sword in his left hand was shining with a pale metallic luster, he could still make out that the two were almost the same. It was just that the short sword in his left hand was a little thinner.
'This should be the weapon that that group of people used. They only managed to forcefully remove the symbol on the sword's two slots. Zuo Feng came to a conclusion in his mind. At this moment, he was almost certain that everything here was done by the group of grey robed men. To be able to confirm the identity of the perpetrator, Zuo Feng's trip was not in vain.
Zuo Feng followed the traces of the fight and continued to walk inside. The bodies were becoming less and less, but the intensity of the fight could be seen. Not only did it not weaken, it was even more intense.
'Looks like the bandits are trying their best to protect something, to prevent these assassins from getting into the backroom.
When a corpse leaning against the wall appeared before Zuo Feng's eyes, he was also stunned for a moment. This was because this person's entire body had turned purple, his eyes bulged out a lot, and there was very little blood on his body.
Zuo Feng had seen it happen before after death, and it was due to the use of [Rampage Qi]. Zuo Feng guessed that this bandit's cultivation base was not low and did not hesitate to use his berserk Qi to stop him. Thus, his interest towards the inner chamber must have been greatly piqued.
He walked back inside. There were only a few corpses left, and there were less and less traces of the battle. This meant that the remaining warriors were relatively weak, and could not stop the assassin in the slightest. Very soon, Zuo Feng entered the inner room. There was a room that looked like a study and a staircase that led to the second floor.
After hesitating for a while, Zuo Feng still chose to go to the second floor to have a look, as traces of the battle extended up to the second floor. It seemed that the killer's target was the second floor. Zuo Feng arrived at the second floor's corridor in a few seconds. The second floor was obviously much smaller than the first floor. It seemed like the owner's bedroom was on the second floor.
After entering the largest room, there were no traces of a fight. Instead, it seemed that they were looking for someone. The room was very messy. After a careful search, Zuo Feng did not find anything, so he entered the second room.
The decorations and decorations of the second bedroom were obviously that of a woman's room. Zuo Feng carefully recalled that from the moment he had entered the hall down to now, he had not found the woman's corpse. This represented a piece of information. This mountain stronghold was more accurate to say that there were female survivors in the building. After searching the remaining rooms, Zuo Feng found that there was more than one female bedroom on the second floor.
This place should be the residence of the bandit leader. If these women's rooms weren't his wife's and concubines' rooms, then they should be his daughter's room. If he didn't find any female corpses, then it was possible that these women had escaped from here. Could it be that those assassins were aiming for these girls? Zuo Feng felt that this possibility was not very high.
Returning to the first floor and entering the study that he had yet to enter, he found it hard to imagine that a bandit leader could understand a few words and actually have such a large study.
A male corpse wearing a brocade robe laid in the corner. The corpse's eyes were wide open and it had an indescribably shocked expression. Zuo Feng only glanced at it with disgust before focusing his attention on the other items in the room.
The books in the study room were scattered all around and the desk was also a mess. Zuo Feng only took a glance and didn't notice anything special, so he prepared to leave immediately.
However, just as he was turning around, he suddenly stopped his footsteps and looked at the corpse again. Then, his gaze focused slightly as he looked at where the corpse was pointing at.
