C14 The Trip to the Mosheng Building
If it were any other day, today would be a hectic workday, but currently unemployed, Ann enjoyed a long, leisurely nap. She lazily got out of bed, yawning deeply. It had been ages since she hadn't been jolted awake by an alarm clock. But she couldn't indulge in this lifestyle for long. She needed to find a job to support herself and get into the inner workings of Huachen Medicine!
Ann opened her laptop and navigated to Huachen's job listings page. As usual, there were two job postings:
Hiring: Cleaning Staff, Monthly Salary: $930.
Hiring: Security Staff, Monthly Salary: $1,100.
No wonder it's a renowned company; even the cleaning staff's salary was nearly as much as her basic pay in her previous job.
"Buzz—buzz—" Her phone vibrated incessantly.
Ann grabbed it and switched to speaker mode.
"Is this Miss Ann?"
"Yes."
"Hello, Miss Ann. I'm calling from Huachen Medicine's HR department. May I ask if you're considering a job change recently?"
Ann was startled and looked around. Did Huachen have surveillance in her home?
"Miss Ann?"
Ann was momentarily speechless. "Your cleaning staff salary is indeed higher than the industry standard, but..." She couldn't believe she was actually tempted by Huachen's cleaning position.
"Cleaning?" The person on the other end paused for a couple of seconds, then continued, "Miss Ann, would you be interested in the position of Marketing Director at our company?"
"Slap—slap—" Ann slapped her thighs hard in disbelief.
“Ah—” The pain made her gasp sharply.
It hurt! This wasn't a dream!
The voice on the other end of the phone continued, “If Miss Qiao is interested, you can come for an interview this Friday morning on the 16th floor of the Mosheng Building.”
How could she not be interested! Qiao Ann felt like she was about to be knocked out by this unexpected opportunity.
For the next two days, Qiao Ann focused entirely on preparing for the interview. She was confident in her professional skills, but as for other subjective factors, she couldn't control them. Still, she was determined to approach it with complete seriousness.
Early Friday morning, Qiao Ann got up to get ready.
A beige business suit, light makeup, hair neatly up, and six-centimeter heels—she looked both simple and professional, exuding confidence.
Just as she was about to leave, she realized her mother, Wooh Yue, hadn't come home last night.
This meant there would be no adult to accompany Xinyi to her follow-up appointment at the hospital today.
Zhan, who had been quietly playing with a Rubik's Cube, suddenly stopped and seemed to read Qiao Ann's mind. “Mom, I can take Xinyi to the hospital.”
Of course, Qiao Ann wouldn't let Zhan take Xinyi alone, so she decided to bring both kids with her and find a place for them to wait while she attended the interview. Afterward, they would head straight to the hospital.
The Mosheng Building towered into the sky.
“Wow—Mom, this building is so tall! Will you be working here?” Little Xinyi's mouth was wide open, her big eyes sparkling with wonder.
The Mosheng Group was renowned, but this was her first time here. She nodded slightly at Xinyi. "Yes, Mom will definitely work here."
Joanne led Zhan and Xinyi to the lounge area in the Mosheng Building's lobby.
"Zhan, you and your sister stay here. I'll come back to get you once my interview is over, okay?"
Joanne knew Zhan well. Even at just five years old, he was remarkably composed, giving her more peace of mind than her unreliable mother ever did.
Zhan nodded.
Joanne gently patted the children's heads and prepared to leave.
"Mom," Zhan called softly.
Joanne paused.
The two children exchanged a glance, then planted a firm kiss on each of Joanne's cheeks.
"Good luck, Mom. You can do it," Zhan said, smoothing the stray hair on Joanne's forehead like a little adult.
"Yes!" Joanne nodded firmly.
As she stepped into the elevator, her heart swelled with warmth and motivation. With the encouragement of her two treasures, she felt invincible.
In the lobby, the two exceptionally adorable children caught the attention of passersby, with many stopping to chat.
"Brother, can we go upstairs? This building is so tall. If we go to the top, can we touch the clouds?"
Zhan glanced at the people constantly trying to engage them, feeling a bit annoyed. He nodded and led Xinyi to an elevator with a short line.
Everyone watched as the two adorable kids headed toward the executive elevator, not daring to follow.
Gao Yi glanced down at the two children standing by the elevator. He was about to ask something but noticed the Second Young Master was curiously observing the kids, so he stayed silent.
The elevator doors opened.
Mo Kai didn't move. Zhan, holding Xinyi's hand, also stayed put.
Mo Kai nodded toward Zhan, indicating, "You go first."
"Thank you," Zhan replied, cool and polite, as he led Xinyi inside.
Mo Kai followed them in.
Gao Yi, trying to appear calm, pressed the button for the 66th floor and asked, "Where are you headed, kids?"
"The top floor," Zhan answered.
The 66th floor was indeed the top.
Mo Kai gave Gao Yi a look.
Gao Yi promptly sent a message to the building's security: Check if any children are reported missing.
As the elevator continued upward, Mo Kai suddenly felt a tug on his sleeve and looked down.
A face as fair as porcelain, with doll-like features and a bright smile, looked up at him. Large, round eyes sparkled like stars.
In Mo Kai's memory, three people had tugged at his sleeve in this way: Su Mu five years ago, Qiao Ann a few days ago, and now this little child. The gesture was identical.
