C17 An Unpredictable Man
Mo Kai sat quietly, his gaze fixed intently on Qiao Ann. His eyes were deep and dark, like obsidian, reflecting an indescribable emotion.
Qiao Ann straightened her back, trying to appear calm as she met his gaze, but she couldn't shake the feeling that her composure was faltering compared to his.
In front of her, Mo Kai seemed like a king with the power of life and death, while she felt like a prisoner awaiting judgment, hanging on his final word.
After a long silence, Mo Kai finally spoke, "Miss Qiao, I have a few questions for you."
"Go ahead, Director Mo."
"Miss Qiao, have you studied psychology?"
Qiao Ann wasn't sure how this question related to the interview, but she answered honestly, "Director Mo, my major is marketing, but I do have a personal interest in psychology and often read books on the subject. However, I didn't think the position of Marketing Chief Inspector at Huachen required a background in psychology."
Mo Kai didn't respond immediately, his long fingers tapping rhythmically on the table as if deep in thought.
Qiao Ann looked at the man sitting formally in front of her, finding it hard to reconcile him with the same man who had recently cornered her in the restroom, threatening to take action right then and there.
At this moment, Mo Kai exuded an aura of cold authority that was difficult to approach.
However, if he can keep up this strictly business-like demeanor, it might not be a bad thing. After all, Ann wasn't sure if he would let personal reasons influence his decision during the final interview.
Moreover, he had previously expressed some concerns about her work style.
Fortunately, Kai proceeded with the standard interview process, asking direct and straightforward professional questions, to which Ann responded flawlessly.
Their exchange was almost like a duel between experts.
After a few rounds, Kai adjusted his glasses with a long finger and said, "Miss Ann, you did well today."
Ann couldn't help but feel a surge of joy. "So, did I pass?"
Kai already knew the answer, but he paused deliberately before replying, "Go home and wait for the news."
The fireworks in Ann's heart fizzled out instantly; she hadn't expected this outcome.
"Director Mo, are you holding a grudge?" Ann stood up abruptly, her words sharp and direct.
Kai's lips curled slightly, finding it amusing that her previously obedient demeanor didn't last until the end of the interview.
"Just give it to me straight!" Ann was always straightforward, and his slow-paced approach felt like torture to her.
Kai looked at Ann, whose eyes seemed to be on fire, and he had reason to believe that if he weren't the interviewer today, she might have lunged at him.
He found it amusing how she puffed out her cheeks in frustration, yet seemed utterly helpless against him.
Mo Kai leaned back lazily in his chair and, out of nowhere, asked, "Miss Qiao, how have you been sleeping lately?"
"What?" Qiao Ann was taken aback.
Mo Kai's lips curled into a slight smile as he watched her quietly, appearing to have all the patience in the world.
Suddenly, Qiao Ann understood what he meant, and her face turned as red as a boiled lobster.
"Looks like you've been having sweet dreams, Miss Qiao," Mo Kai said, tapping his fingers lightly on the table. "How does it feel to have the run of the city?"
Wasn't he just all business a moment ago? How did he switch gears so fast and head straight for the express lane? What was he getting at?
Qiao Ann couldn't help but stare at the man across from her, whose emotions seemed hidden behind those deep, inscrutable eyes.
Mo Kai's gaze softened slightly, and he stood up suddenly, saying calmly, "Let's go."
"Where to?" Qiao Ann asked instinctively.
"To the HR department."
Qiao Ann thought she misheard and jumped to her feet, the chair scraping loudly against the floor.
"Director Mo, are you saying I passed the interview?" Her eyes sparkled with excitement.
Mo Kai glanced at her. "Since when did Miss Qiao become so unsure of herself?"
Qiao Ann thought to herself, I'm not lacking confidence; it's just that you're such a tricky guy, I have to be cautious!
Mo Kai, hands in pockets, walked away, catching a glimpse of Qiao Ann spinning around in delight, reflected in the window. A barely noticeable smile curved his lips as he strode out.
"How are those two kids doing?" Mo Kai asked Gao Yi, who was standing outside the door.
"As per your instructions, the lobby security is keeping an eye on them. They'll be safe, don't worry."
Mo Kai nodded, took a couple of steps, then paused. "Bring me all the information on Qiao Ann from five years ago."
