C4 CHAPTER 04: Got Hospitalized

GABRIEL’s P.O.V.

I don’t know what I’m doing here. Earlier, I was just walking down the school hallway and now I’m here, inside of the hospital premises while waiting for some information.

Erevell had fallen down on the floor earlier, and I don’t know what to do. Until someone called a nurse for that guy she punched on the face and for her as well. The guy remained at the school clinic, but the teachers decided to bring Erevell to the hospital. I don’t know why. My mind was now flooded with millions of unanswered questions.

I partially blaming myself for what happened. She’s just trying to help me. If it wasn’t for me, maybe she wouldn’t be here. Maybe it really is my fault. She’s been gone for days, and now that she finally came back, I just gave her another reason to be absent from school again.

It all started when I stepped inside of our school Cafeteria. Compared to those past few days, my classmates only treated me as an empty wind. Now each passing days without her started to became worst and worst. Until today.

As I pay my reserved food for today, students started to throw their cups filled with different drinks towards my direction. I don’t know why, but maybe because this is another part of having Erevell as my friend.

I can’t help but to mentally scold myself for I can’t even stand up in front of these students. I’m tired being the weak home schooled transferee student who’s letting everyone bully him.

“Why are you doing this?” I asked, my uniform is now full with different flavored drinks coming from these laughing students.

“Because you’re friends with that weird bitch!” one of them scream on my face.

I don’t know if what he just said is true, but maybe... Maybe we aren’t friends. Do I really trust someone like her whom I met and been with just for a day? Maybe I’m wrong. If she really is my friend, then why isn’t she here? Do I really need to let myself endure this kind of treatment from others just to be called as her friend?

“No! She’s not my friend! I barely even know her!” I fired back out of frustration.

I can’t help but to feel guilty right after I said that. How can I did that to her? I know that if ever Erevell is here, she would be hurt so bad by my words.

“You’re a liar!” one of the students shouted before throwing another cup on my face.

“Stop it!” a familiar voice screamed at the top of her lungs.

The commotion stops, and the crowd gone into silence. I looked at her with a surprised expression on my face. I couldn’t help myself but to be amused when she just smiled at me before glaring towards those awful people.

Until I remember what I just did earlier. I deny her as my friend. I wonder how she’s feeling about that right now. I hope that she can forgive me for that. I wanted to apologize, but I couldn’t. Because until now, those bullies is looking at us like something is very wrong with having Erevell around.

She slowly walked forward, and when she finally reached my location, she took another step back just to face the guy who threw another cup over my face earlier. She punched him hard, causing him to fall into the ground. The crowd gasped, same as me out of too much shock.

“E-Erevell...” I uttered her name.

The guy whom she punched is now having a broken nose. I tried to remain calm, but I couldn’t. Because right after that moment, I witness how she couldn’t breathe properly anymore. She looks like she’s drowning. Her knees trembles, until she finally lost her balance.

“Erevell!” I shouted her name, surprised is visible on my voice’s tone.

She fall down, before closing her angelic eyes. That scenario started another commotion before we realized that Erevell had lost her consciousness. I quickly kneel down, checking upon her. Until finally, someone called a nurse and they decided to bring her here, in the hospital where I’m currently at right now.

“Gab! Oh my God! You’re here! What happened?! Are you alright?”

I stood up as soon as I heard my Mom’s voice. I wanted to break down and cry, but I couldn’t. I know that if I did that, she’ll be more worried about me.

”Erevell?! Erevell!” I heard another voice coming from the entrance of the hospital as Mom gave me a hug.

“Erevell? That girl is the one who went to our house, right? What happened, Gab?”

Before I could answer, Erevell’s Mom, a middle aged woman with reddish hair same as my friend came into our view cutting our conversation.

“You know my daughter? What happened?!” she asked me, looking very worried.

“S-she... She c-collapsed.”

“What?! And what exactly do you mean by that?”

“She fainted and he lost her consciousness, Ma’am.” I answered respectfully.

“Why?!” she asked, before gripping my arms tightly.

“Excuse me?” My Mom removed Erevell’s Mom’s hands on my arms before hiding me protectively behind her. “My son doesn’t know anything about this. I’ll take him home.”

She was about to drag me towards the exit of the hospital but I didn’t let her. My conscience for denying my first ever friend had already brought a grieving guilt to my conscience. I know to myself that I couldn’t take it anymore if ever that I lied again. No, I shouldn’t lie anymore. I need to tell them the truth.

“No... Stop, Mom. It was all my fault.” I looked at her, and she look so surprised because of what I have done.

“I knew it!” Erevell’s Mom whispered, looking at me with disapproval in her eyes.

“What do you think you’re doing, Gab?” Mom asked.

“I’m doing the right thing, Mom. This is all my fault. I admit it.” I look at Erevell’s Mom with an apologizing eyes. “I’m very sorry to put your daughter in danger, Ma’am. Believe me, I really am. If only I could do something to help you... I’m really sorry. You can blame me for what happened to her as much as you want.”

The glare was now replaced with amusement. Even Mom is now looking very proud of me because of my brave confession. She looked down, before taking another step forward to face Erevell’s Mom.

“I’m sorry. I don’t know what happened.”

“That’s uh... That’s fine.”

My Mom was about to answer and thanked her when a doctor comes out from the emergency room where Erevell is currently at right now. He looks like he have some sort of news to tell us.

“Are you Mrs. Serrendes?” he asked to Erevell’s Mom.

“Yes, I am. How’s my daughter? Is she okay?”

“Don’t worry, she’s fine now. Seems like she just lost her consciousness because of shortage of air. And, she wants to see you and a guy named Gabriel...” The doctor looked at me.

“Sure. Come...” Erevell’s Mom look at me. “Do you want to see my daughter?” she asked and I nodded.

Mom just gave me a thrifty smile before letting me go after Mrs. Serrendes. As soon as we stepped inside of the emergency room, I saw how a smile slowly formed on Erevell’s lips. She looks like nothing bad ever happened to her today. In fact, she looks like she’s glowing.

“Hey, Mom.”

Her Mom kneel down beside her bed, and she chuckled at Mrs. Serrendes’ worried facial expression.

“Don’t laugh at me! You nearly kill me out of worry! And now this is what kind of treatment I’ll get from you?!” she scolded her.

“I’m really sorry, Mom. I didn’t mean to hurt you like this nor to make you feel worried. It’s just that... This is the way I am. You know that, right?”

She nodded, and they hugged each other. I stood there like a statue, witnessing their confusing conversation. Though I couldn’t understand what it was all about, I tried to look fine in front of her.

“Mom, can I talk to Gab for a second?” she asked, smiling towards me.

I can’t help but to smile as well when I saw how glad she is that I am here. Or maybe she’s just saying that even though she’s already hurting inside. I hope I didn’t hurt her that much when she heard what I said earlier. I will plead guilty if that was a crime.

“Sure, honey. Just make sure that you wouldn’t push yourself that much, alright?”

Erevell put a thumbs up, and her Mom finally stood up looking at me. She nodded before leaving the room. I sighed, before taking another step towards Erevell.

“H-hey...”

“Come closer, awkward face.” She chuckled.

So I did. I followed her instruction kneeling beside her bed just like what her mother did. Seeing her at this state makes me feel really guilty.

“I’m sorry, Erevell... I-I... I d-didn’t mean to–”

“It’s alright, you stupid. You only did that to protect yourself, duh...”

I look at her, and I could see that she’s really serious about that right now, meaning that she wasn’t mad at me or anything.

“Still, I’m sorry. You wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for me.”

“It’s not your fault. I’ll always ends up in here even if I didn’t want to. But what I did back there... I chose that. I chose to protect you. I know you couldn’t do that for yourself so I’ll do it for you. I’ll always be your protector from now on, Gab.”

“But I don’t need one. I like you as a friend, not a bodyguard.”

She chuckled at my response before reaching for my hand.

“I can also be your friend...”

“A bestfriend, even better...”

I looked at her and smiled. She beamed before softly caressing my palm.

“Thank you, Gab. I’m so lucky I met you.”

“Nope. I’m the lucky one. Thank you.”

And with that, we ended our conversation like nothing bad happened on that day. From that moment forward, we made a silent promise... A promise that only the two of us knows... And that is to be good friend, a protector, and a shelter for each other.
